Ponikarovsky Heading to L.A.

A former Leaf is about to sign with Los Angeles, as Alexei Ponikarovsky has agreed to join the Kings (although a deal has not yet been signed).  This ends some speculation that “Poni” would have to take his games overseas, as this summers UFA market has seen a lot of viable NHL players still without a job.  Ponikarovsky was shipped to the Penguins by Toronto at this year’s trade deadline, bringing back Luca Caputi in what was a very fair exchange of players.  However, Pittsburgh was expecting the Ukrainian to contribute at the level that saw him pour out 61 points for the Leafs in 2008-2009.  With a disappointing 9 points down the stretch for the recent champs and an awful showing in the playoffs, teams weren’t exactly lining up to sign the 30-year old.

However, Los Angeles is more than happy to take a chance on the four-time 20 goal scorer, as they are a thrice-shunned (Kovalchuk, Gagne, Frolov…count it!)  franchise that seriously desired an offensive boost.  It remains to be seen whether Ponikarovsky will be the answer to their problems.  While Alexei is capable of a relatively dependable two-way game, he is hardly an impact player on a consistent basis and was surprisingly invisible during a lot of his stay in Pittsburgh.  This could be an indication that Ponikarovsky needs to be relied upon heavily to produce at his 60-point pace (as he was [unfortunately] a big part of Toronto’s offense in the last few years).  With elite talent taking away the premier ice-time, the longtime Maple Leaf is closer to a 45 point forward.  This will be the case down south, as Ponikarovsky slots in under Anze Kopitar, Justin Williams, Ryan Smyth, Dustin Brown and Wayne Simmonds on the depth chart.

As such, this move is heavily dependent on the details of this contract (which should be released shortly).  If Kings GM Dean Lombardi dished out a figure under the $3 million that Frolov signed today with the Rangers, this would be a good contract for a team with a ton of cap space anyways.  Any more and the Kings will find themselves with a player that is a good complementary NHLer, but one that will rarely be the difference between a win and a loss.

    #1 – Crosby
    #2 – Ovechkin
    #3 – Big drop off
    .
These two guys will be top-5 in scoring every year for the next 10 years if they stay healthy, no doubt about it. They are both generational talents.

Don’t even ask that question haha, because there is no right answer. Crosby and Ovechkin are the best, they are on a tier of their own.

Pretty slow on this site today considering all the stuff that went down in the last 24 hours or so. Frolov signs in New York, Poni signs in LA, Moulson avoids arbitration, Fleischmann re-ups with the Caps, and Brule avoids arbitration. All of this pretty much sets the market for Wheeler around 2.5 million, and further disrupts the Bruins off-season gameplan. Somewhat hilariously, the Bruins area also in talks with Bill Guerin now, according to Andy Strickland. Does any GM in the league have a stranger set of priorities than Chiarelli?

    @ moimo28

Ovechkin DOESN’T and has NEVER played defense. Plus Crosby wins draws, blocks shots, saves goals, works harder for his goals in general.
    .
    Crosby Career PPG- 1.36
    Ovechkin Career PPG- 1.34

So, Crosby is actually more of an offensive weapon than Ovechkin.
    .
And the last summer on that Special they did for TSN, Sid vs Alex for the Olympics:
    .
Crosby took a day with the cup. He honoured the Canadian Forces, his hometown, went to a childrens hospital, played some road hockey withfriends, and gave the city a free Sam Roberts concert.
    Then, he trained.
    .
Ovechkin did a promo for NHL 2K10
Then, he went partying in a limo.
    .
    Crosby any day.

And to all of you who say “Crosbys goal was a fluke”, you got to remember, he typically shoots five-hole. Over half the time, he goes five-hole, especially around bottom of the circle. He knows that about 40% (that’s thelast # I heard) of goals go five-hole. So it wasn’t really a fluke, it just wasn’t “pretty” and wasn’t the goal people imagined Miller letting in.
    .
And in discussions of best player, don’t forget to include Duncan Keith and Ryan Miller, the best Dman and goalie right now. Miller was the main reason the US had a chance in that goal medal game. And Duncan Keith should have won the Conn Smythe (as good as Toews was, Keith was better). I’ve been a HUGE Keith fan since before the lockout.

    @ Grahamzky

I would not be so quick to put Malkin in that group. He disappears all of the time. And when he disappears, he disappears. He had only 77 points last year. I wouldn’t put him with the “elite”. He plays amazing, then he’s gone. He doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing half the time too.
    .
In the last game against Montreal, Malkin switched from white tape to black tape because he wasn’t scoring. After a few shifts without scoring with black tape, he went back to white. I was thinking- “are you serious?”. He’s definitely not an elite player. He could eventually become an elite point produced, but he hasn’t foud that consistency yet.

    @ Joe50

And it was an ACCIDENT that he was shooting the puck at the net to score????
    .
Good players score when they’re needed most.
    .
Look at shootouts. Crosby doesn’t have the best percentage, but he has the most Game-Winning Shootout Goals of any player.
    .
Henderson wouldn’t be a household name if he didn’t score that goal- what if Treyiak had stopped it. What if Esposito scored it??
    .
You’re just pissed because you don’t like him, and he scored, and now you want to like him.

lol I have been trying… but it is so damn hard. One day Ovechkin is a terrible player, now the very next morning I thought he was ripping on Crosby… now that I reread, he wasn’t. I take it back I suppose…

Bruins will strongly consider sending Michael Ryder & 4M contract to minors to keep Blake Wheeler, depending on arbitration ruling today.

Oh my god, Malkin’s not an elite player. Hahahahaha. Look at Pittsbugh’s record when Crosby is out of the line-up vs. when Malkin is out of the line-up. He had a real off year, yes. But that doesn’t make him not an elite player. I’ve often said Crosby is not even the best player on his team. Although this year he proved he was.
    .
Anyway’s when I said I don’t believe that Ovi or Crosby are the best player’s in the world right now. Think about it. Sedin was the best player in the regular season. Pavol Demitra was probably the best player in the olympic’s. Crosby and Ovechkin we’re both nowhere near the best player’s in the playoff’s. How about Chris Pronger? I know he’s not the most popular player in the world. But there is no one who can grab a whole team and put them on their back like he does. Duncan Keith also get’s serious prop’s from me. If defence is the hardest position to play and they’re the best at it. Why wouldn’t they be the best player’s in the world?
