FanPost: Why Not Frolov?

Put your hand up if you think the Leafs are only one or two pieces away from winning a Stanley Cup this year. OK, I admire your enthusiasm, but put your hands down! There’s actually a good reason I’ve posed this question and I’ll come to it again in just a minute. With the long awaited Kaberle trade still looming, many in Leafs Nation have asked the question: If he could be had so cheaply, why didn’t Burke sign Frolov? The answer is that he didn’t want him; and trust me Leafs’ fans, you don’t want him either!

Frolov did not sign with New York to win a Stanley Cup. New York did not suggest, in their sales pitch to Frolov, “Come to New York and you can be part of a team that’s making a run at a championship.” Frolov wouldn’t care if they were. His one-year contract, with a team desperate for top-tier offense, in one of the world’s largest sporting markets, is designed to give Frolov an opportunity to showcase himself to the league. If he plays his cards right, he thinks he can put himself back on the market next year and get a big long-term contract to round out his career. Frolov want his payday. He’s going to play one year of big-time hockey in a big-time market to get it.

Don’t misunderstand me, Frolov is a talented player. His contract locks him up at a reasonable price; one that this analyst predicts Frolov will more than earn this upcoming season. However, to a team in the Leafs’ position, he’s useless. As we established from the beginning, the Leafs are not realistic contenders for the Cup this year. When they finally are ready – even one year later – Frolov would not be around. In the mean time, he’d take up a valuable roster spot; valuable as a tool for imparting priceless experience on a young player who is going to be part of future Leafs’ Cup runs.

Lets, try one more way to contextualize it: If you somehow possessed the power to guarantee the Leafs a championship, and asked Dion Phaneuf if he would give up his 7 million USD salary this year to be the captain of the first Toronto Maple Leafs team to win the Stanley Cup in over 4 decades, do you think he’d take the deal? Conversely, if you made an offer to Frolov to earn that same 7 million dollars to play for a team that was guaranteed not to win, or even make the playoffs, do you think he’d take the deal? Try the same equation with Luke Schenn or new Leaf Colby Armstrong. I’m not saying Frolov doesn’t play to win or doesn’t want to win. I’m saying he doesn’t want it bad enough to make it on the squad Burke is putting together to accomplish it.

The players who wear the Blue and White and lift the Stanley Cup for the first time in over a generation will become the stuff of legend. Their names will pass from the lips of Fathers and Grandfathers, in hushed reverent whispers, to the children who are the next generation of Leafs fans; telling of how they were there – they saw it happen. The players who carry that honour will be those who are willing to go to the wall for it. Those are the players Burke wants. Who do you want on your team?

Of course, every player wants a payday, and if the Leafs were a genuine contender for the Stanley Cup this year, I would be one of the people chirping about the lost opportunity to sign Frolov. For you poolies out there, this is going to be a very big year for the talented winger, so don’t miss out. Next year, however, Frolov will not be a Ranger. He will not be a building block in the franchise’s future. He will not hoist a cup with them. There is a talented young prospect, somewhere in the Rangers organisation, with a career that’s going to feel the impact of that fact at least as powerfully as the Ranger’s place in the final standings will.

    @ Cameron:
When you’re on the 29th place team in the league…how much credit can you really garner? Just a devil’s advocate on that one. The people on this site – myself included – have witnessed mediocre or just plain terrible teams iced for the past half decade. For as bad as Dallas was, they were better than the Leafs, and Neal is a young winger who was super productive last season, something every Leaf fan can agree we lacked (with all due respect to misters Kulemin and Caputi).

As to why so many people hate grabovski, it deals with the fact that he’s an inconsistent talent with about as much media savvy as a neanderthal and he’s looked at as un-burkeian for such a reason. I actually kind of like him (though not as much as you or Jordan)

Fair enough. Fletcher adjusted to the cap about as well as my grandmother adjusted to the VCR.

All the talk about Neal and ryan, clowe and everyone else but the guy we are getting.

Here is what Burkie is working on.

To Pitsburgh. Kaberle, Kadri, Kulemin, Riemer, 2nd round pick

    To Toronto Evgeny Malkin

Pitsburgh has to much of there Cap at center. and other than Kunitz they really have a poor set of wingers. Their Centers are now Crosdy,, Staal, Kadri the add a pmd and a really good winger in kulemin In essence they lose one Malkin but upgrade 2 other positions and have a number 1 center prospect in Kadri to ease the loss.

    Peace @-@

When are we going to find out what Boston is going to do with Blake Wheeler? His arbitration case was heard at 9am on Tuesday and the arbitrator must reach a decision within 48 hours, which would have been 9am this morning. I’ve read some blogs today saying the Habs may have a deal in place that would send Price to an unknown team for their number 1 goalie and a top 6 forward. I immediatly thought Price to Boston for Thomas and Wheeler, but would the Habs make this deal with one of their biggest rivals??

Although I don’t think there’s a chance in hell this would happen, if Burke were somehow able to pull it off, I definatly think Kulemin would be sticking around. It’s no secret that these two are friends and really enjoy playing with each other

Yeah I completely agree. He will surprise us all just like he did with the Dion trade, and all of the bullshit and speculation we’ve all written and argued about over the past month or two will be irrelevant…but that’s why I love Burke, never seizes to amaze!!

If Grabovski was 22 years old and scored 24 and 27 goals in the last two seasons, only a fool would bash him. They have similar career PPG averages, but Neal is a big guy who averaged over 2 hits per game last season, has a much better givaway vs takeaway ratio, and has essentially improved every season in the NHL . It’s no contest which of the two is the better player, and the difference is very large.

I have one I just e-mailed to Alex that compares the current Leafs’ D to each other. I’m worried it might be too long though. It took like 20 hours to make. I’ll be making one shortly comparing Schenn to the league’s premier defensive defensmen as well.

He’s only been in the league 2 years. It’s not much of a compliment to say he’s improved “every” year. He’s also 23 this year while Grabovski is 26 – so the age difference is not that enormous, but of course, it is worth mentioning. Yes, you can point to the hits and the giveaway vs. takeaway stats, and that’s an excellent point – but you can’t do that and not mention Grabovski’s advantages. He draws a lot of penalties, has improved to over 50% on faceoffs, has been solid defensively, and played on much, much less talented lines with far less minutes and relatively little PP time, and still produced on par or better than Neal.

    @ Cameron:
I wish it was possible to find archived articles on TSN.ca and go back and find the report on the Grabovski trade with Montreal… if I remember the comments section correctly, Leafs fans (myself included) were fairly optimistic about his upside and potential, raving about how good of a deal it was for us… then after his 20 goal, 48 point season with the Leafs, Fletcher looked like a genius… now after one season of injuries, inconsistent line mates and an off ice altercation, he’s worthless…
    -
I’m not a huge Grabovski fan, but I certainly don’t hate him and wouldn’t be disappointed if he was on our starting roster…

Exactly. I think you have to ask yourself what Grabovski’s stats would look like if the situations were reversed, and he was playing with a winger equivalent of Brad Richards (not sure who this would be, but I think you get my point), and Eriksson on his other wing. Then, what would have happened if Neal was playing with the centermen equivalent of Alex Ponikarovsky, and Niklas Hagman. Are their stats even comparable if you make that switch and give Grabovski all of Neal’s ice-time and PP time? I doubt it. Neal would still have more hits though.
