Mayers a Shark?

According to CBC Sports, the San Jose Sharks are on the verge of signing free agent grinder Jamal Mayers. The Sharks announced on their website their plans for the veteran forward. “Jamal is a fast, physical, team-first player who brings the ingredients we were looking for to this role,” said Sharks general manager Doug Wilson. “He is an extremely fit athlete who can kill penalties and we think he will mesh well with our group of forwards.”

Mayers split last season between the Maple Leafs and Flames. He was dealt to Calgary in a multi-player deal that brought Dion Phaneuf to Toronto. In 71 games, he posted 3 goals, 11 assists and 131 penalty minutes.

There are still a few other former Leafs on the market. Ian White recently signed a one-year deal worth just under $3M to remain a Calgary Flame. Lee Stempniak is still seeking a home after an impressive end-of-season run with the Coyotes tallying 14 goals in the last 18 games. Garnet Exelby, who finished the year with a -8 and 71 penalty minutes, also has yet to find a new jersey to wear.

With the Leafs still looking to address the Kaberle situation, which will ultimately conclude itself within the next 12 days, a decision will have to be made to either sign a player such as Raffi Torres or Marek Svatos for the second and third line or give the young guns an opportunity to crack open a few roster spots.

    @ flappypaddle:
Bonuses earned will count against the cap. There is no way Burke will leave himself in a position where he could end up 5 million over the cap at the end of the year.
Burke will have a target that he thinks will be reached in bonuses and add that to his total salary. He will only gamble on bonuses he is confident will not be reached. He would prefer to be under the cap by the total bonus amount to be able to take on salary at the trade deadline.
In my opinion Burke would have to take four million in salary off that line-up and even then will be tight to the cap at the end of the year. Even if you take a player away that is making 4 million that is not enough because he would probably be replaced by at least a one million player. You would have to remove two three million players and replace both with one million dollar players.
The cap problem the Leafs have because of makeable bonuses is real just because capgeek takes them off becaue you are allowed to be over the cap at the beginning of the year by your bonus amount does not mean any manager would risk being in that situation.
The Leafs are a team fighting for a playoff spot this year and the next year would be handcuffed severely by the penaly.

I am betting he would gamble some what simply because we will have way more affordable goaltending next year with Giggy coming off the books. But I can see your point, it would be intresting to know what the performance bonuses are for some of the players. Just to determine what is achieveable and whats not.

Since this thread is linked to the article Mayers a Shark? I simply say best of luck to Jamal. I did not appreciate his work here as it seemed to me that he did not fully comprehend what his role was. I think he needed to be an agitator who was willing to drop the mitts when needed to stick up for a teammate. When you play few minutes and your offensive skill set is limited then you should be playing every shift with the intention of punishing the opposition and giving them something else to think about other than putting the puck into your team’s net. I never got that sense with Jamal. He seemed to pick fights at bad times and for the wrong reason most of the time. Also, when he did fight he seemed to fight scared. That is not how you get your team to rally together for the greater good. Of course when you sound like little Michael Jackson during interviews you do not come across as intimidating.

Maple Leafs Annual Question: There’s no way this will arrive before September 1, right? I’m moving into my new place that day and I don’t want some dirty previous home owner touching my sweet copy.

I think Kadri is too talented to not stick with the big club. He was definitely the best player on the knights, and got them to the 2nd round and game 7 against the Rangers with a team that had lost a lot of its talent to the NHL (Carlson, Tavares, Del Zotto etc.). He kept up with the best in the regular season in the O, and blew everyone out of the water in the playoffs. He was also the knights best player last year in the playoffs as well (when they had Tavares).

Unless he has a terrible camp he will start with the leafs. Not to mention he has been hanging out with Phaneuf from what the news articles said earlier last month. So they are trying to get him comfortable with the pro players and game.
