Jerry D’Amigo Set To Sign With The Maple Leafs

According to numerous sources, including the Canadian Press, the Toronto Maple Leafs and prospect Jerry D’Amigo are expected to finalize a three year entry level deal sometime this week.  The move would see D’Amigo forfeit his NCAA eligibility and likely join the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, who own his CHL rights.

D’Amigo, drafted in the sixth round of last year’s entry draft, has quickly rocketed to the top of the prospect depth chart over the past year.  He played an integral role in the USA’s World Junior upset over Canada this past January in Saskatchewan.

What bullshit. Not only do Kovi and Lou go off trying to cheat the system, they hold the entire league and FA market hostage while doing so. How many of those 10 teams interested in Kabs are now suddenly not interested until the Kovi deal is done? Fuck.

Whether Kovy signs quickly or not all the GMs who are in on Kaberle know that there is a hard deadline. I would think that any team that is seriously considering Kovy would simply withdraw any Kaberle offer pending the signing of Kovy. Unless Burke is also in on Kovy I would assume that it will be business as usual as he focuses on the offers that are coming in.

I would think that the NHL will now have to define the line that was crossed in this deal.

I would think that at the end of the day, the teams that made serious offers for Kaberle know what they’re getting and why they’re getting him…
Kaberle and Kovy are two very different players who play very different roles…

Why wouldn’t LA make their Kaberle trade and use that as an other reason to entice Kovy…
Kaberle floating one-timers to you is certainly not a bad thing…

If LA were to make a run at Kovy (which I highly doubt but is not out of the realms of posibility.) Money would be the prime motivator in limiting their options.

Good for the NHL to stand up to this BS. This was most definitely Lou trying to circumvent the cba. It’s been done a few times already, but this makes a strong lesson to GM’s moving forward. I’m sure it won’t stop a few from pushing the barrier though. It might hold back Kabs offers, but chances are Kovy resigns in NJD in the next few days on a contract that the league will approve. I hope? lol

I think this will delay the process a bit but I think the teams that might be interested in both Kaberle and Kovy will know after a couple of days if Kovy is still leaning towards signing with the devils. I still think kaberle might remian a leaf but we will see

Why does eveyone think Kabby is teams alternates to Kovy?????
If a team wants an elite puck moving dman they will get Kaberle. If they want an elite forward they will get Kovalchuk and if they dont get him they will not go after Kabby BECAUSE THEY DIDNT GET KOVY, but because they just want him. Teams that dont gey Kovy will try to get another forward. Like look at the Leafs. If we dont get a forward for kabby, BB wont go owell now we’ll trade Kabby for a dman. He will keep him or wait until he can get the forward. Fuck its hard to explain when you arent talking but i hope you get it.

    @ Richard-Steven Williams:
I agree as Lombardi has always stated he didn’t want to handicap himself but who knows? After this decision maybe he gets Kovy and Kaberle, both on OneYear Deals and they go big this year… Once they win something or experience modest success compared to Toronto/ATL maybe they stay for less…
I was just using LA as an example… I just think that originally teams were waiting but now that they’ve seen how greedy Kovy is and heard his demands maybe they move on… it’s not like Kaberle plays LW…
If a team knows that an elite puck moving defenseman is what they need and their competitive window is closing or peaking make the trade…
If you still need an elite LW then work that out too…

    @ lukethenuke:

You are aware that LA and the Devils are two teams interested in Kabs? Well if either team is hoping to still land him they wont make a move on Kabs until they have won or lost. San Jose, Buffalo, and whoever else will still bid but less demand for kabs usually equals a lower price paid. It wont totally wreck the trade of Kaberle but it will affect it.

I think the real hold up is all about how much salary the Devils will have to dump, and which players they are willing to move. He will likely just sign a similar deal with the Devils though. THey won’t be able to refute one of these deals if it’s just like the Hossa one.

I think the LA ship has sailed on Kovi possibility-too much water under bridge

I also doubt that any teams other than NJ have pulled out of Kabs talks over this

any team still interested in kovi as well as kabs will likely not want A15 to pass and they lose both kovi and kabs—LA for eg might be worried about SJ (or Ducks) signing Kabs and Boston/Buffalo etc etc could care less about Kovi

If the team wants Kaberle on thier roster if they dont get Kovy, Kaberle will not replace what they could have got!

@ mitch92: Trying to cheat the system: Yeah. Like Hossa. Like DiPietro. Like Luongo. And so on.
As was explained numerous times on this very site, the Kovy contract as it stood was 100% legal. It sounds very much as if the NHL just said “we have the right to kill any proposed contract”–is that written someplace? it must be–and the arbitrator went, well, yeah, they do.

The impression was that D’Amigo wasn’t signing with the Leafs to play in the OHL but to go right to the Marlies if he doesn’t make the Leafs. Ref an article posted earlier.

not going to lie I never read past the signing header, thats works for me as well I think the kid has the potential to be a top six on this team and with a season under his belt witht the Marlies the skies the limit,my next question is can he play in the A at his age or does that not matter

A did something like this the other day already, but I felt I should post it again with a couple slight updates…
    .
    2010/11 LEAFS’ FORWARDS (Current)
    .
    Locks:
Kessel, Bozak, Kulemin, Grabovski, Versteeg, Armstrong, Sjostrom, Orr, Brown
    .
    Almost Locks:
    J. Mitchell, Kadri
    .
    Fighting For Remaing Spots:
    Hanson, Caputi, Mueller, Irwin, D’Amigo
    .
    Longshot Wildcard Players:
    D. Mitchell, Stefanovich, Zigomanis, Brent, Crabb, Hamilton, Ross, McKegg
    .
    .
I moved D’Amigo up from being a longshot to fighting for a spot on the Leafs, as I find the time of his signing to be an indication of Burke’s desire to have him compete for a job with the Leafs this fall. His coach said he had no desire to play in the OHL, and it doesn’t make sense to sign so early if he planned on staying in the college ranks for another 2-3 years, especially with the very little contract space the Leafs have left. And it wouldn’t surprise me if he did crack the NHL this season, as he has already surprised everyone in pretty much every other aspect of his development since he was drafted.
