D’Amigo Officially Signs

It’s been rumored for a few days now, but on Wednesday afternoon, prospect Jerry D’Amigo has finally put pen to paper to sign a 3 year entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs. This signing certainly comes as a surprise as D’Amigo was originally expected to complete a full four year commitment with RPI before turning pro. After a fantastic ’09-’10 season that saw him produce a near point-a-game campaign en route to ECAC Rookie of the Year honours, he rocketed up the team’s depth charts and could find himself in a position to earn a roster spot as early as this fall. Like Tyler Bozak last season, D’Amigo will have two overriding motivations in joining the Maple Leafs.

One, the money is pretty good: The Toronto Star’s Damien Cox explains that Jerry will earn a “max contract”. Update: D’Amigo’s maximum cap hit if he hits all his bonuses would be $1.125 million. Two, there is opportunity: the team’s forward outlook is still in flux and D’Amigo will be given every opportunity to compete for a full-time job at camp. Cox explains that the organization was willing to give D’Amigo a maximum contract because they feel that if the 2009 draft were redone, Jerry would find himself going in the bottom third of the first round. It’ll be interesting to see how the club will attempt to fit D’Amigo into their financial picture if he is indeed deemed NHL ready to start the season.

I’m calling it now. Regular season starts with a line of:
    .
    D’Amigo – Kadri – Armstrong
    .
Top 6 would be mix of Kessel/Bozak/Versteeg/Kulemin/Grabo/(Kaberle). Gives a young line where the kids would be hard to intimidate with Colby on the ice with them. It won’t last very long, but I can see RW starting the year with this trio as a line.

With the possible emergence of D’Amigo and the potential of Mueller and Caputi I wonder if BB has changed his mindset and is looking for a veteran 1/2 center to take the heat off Bozak Grabbo Kadri as the 1/2/3 for a year ie: 1 year of Kabs fro 1 year of this vet. That would allow for Bozak to do 2nd line duties at center, and Kadri to do 2nd line winger duties, and see how it shakes out. D’amigo, Mueller, Caputi could all challenge Kadri for 2nd line winger duties .

    ie:
Kulemin (Veteran from Kabs trade ) Kessel
    Kadri/Caputi/Mueller/D’Amigo Bozak Versteeg
    Shoes Grabbo Armstrong
    Brown Mitchell Orr

All it would take would be for 1 of Kadri/Caputi/Mueller/D’Amigo to show enough for the 2nd line lw spot. If Leafs start with one of them on 2nd line l/w ie: Kadri and another ie: Caputi as one of the spare forwards, and say they both fail after about 10 games or so, then the option is to give the other 2 a try, or move Versteeg to 2nd line l/w, Armstrong up to 2nd line r/w (short term), and fill in the 3rd line r/w spot with a guy like Crabb till 1 of Kadri/Caputi/Mueller/D’Amigo get enough experience to come back up and take that 2nd line l/w spot, move Versteeg back to 2nd line r/w, and bump Army back to 3rd line l/w.

As far as who the veteran center is, … I think Savard’s contract length and health is prohibitive especially since the idea here is 1 year to give the kids a chance to grow, so I would suggest from teams that I have heard might need Kabs or seem to have interest….Bergeron from Boston, ( concussion concerns reduced by 1 yr left on contract term), Umberger from Columbus (he plays center and left wing, 2 years of 3.750 left), Ribeiro from Dallas (3 years left on 5 mil on contract) (hate him but maybe Dion can straighten him out or if not, trade him after a year ), Handzuz from L.A., (4 mil, UFA next year), I don’t see San Jose giving up Pavelski…Washington don’t have anyone they would give up

After a year see if we can go with Kadri and Bozak as 1/2 centers, if not, re-sign the center we got, or there is good crop of UFA Centers available in 2011.

I think BB needs to make playoffs contrary to what might be said, and a vet center for a year gives us more depth and experience at the vital center position and allows the kids to grow with less pressure. The key here is a 1 year fix at center without giving up youth.

Honestly; as much as Kaberle could help this team, I don’t think it would feel good for ANY of our departed players to come back. Even if we were wining at that point, it would just feel like a step backward, too “sutter-esque” if you will
