Burke Holding Cards Tight

Brian Burke stated this morning, “if these offers are all we get, he is staying put,” in regards to the Tomas Kaberle trade watch. It has put many fans on their heels as they await a trade, but it should be known that this statement could be nothing more than a trade tactic.

With nearly half a dozen offers reportedly sent the Maple Leafs and Brian Burke’s way, he has simply let the rest of the league know that he is willing to hang on to his asset. Now, circulated rumors suggest the Leafs may sign Kaberle to an extension. Should the league feel the Leafs will ultimately trade Kaberle and will accept the best offer when it comes down to the 11th hour, they may be hesitant to increase their offerings for the veteran playmaking defenceman.

In turn, Burke makes it known he’s willing to keep Kaberle in hopes to better the deals on the table before making a decision. Fortunately for Leafs fans, the Leafs win one way or the other. Keeping a player of Kaberle’s talent on the back end to lead their powerplay charge is beneficial for the club. Trading him to fill some holes up front and allow the likes of Phaneuf, Beauchemin, Gunnarsson and Schenn to take charge of the powerplay is also a good decision. No matter what Burke does in this situation, based on the quality of the deals on the table, he walks away a winner.

That said, I still believe Tomas Kaberle will be a member of the Maple Leafs tomorrow morning.

Other Kaberle Rumours:

The Orange County Register has stated Anaheim has turned their attention away from Kaberle and are pursuing Willie Mitchell to fill the void on the back end, so all rumours involving Bobby Ryan or Corey Perry are finally put to rest.

San Jose is also still reported to be in the mix, offering up Derek Joslin, but the likelihood of Burke accepting any trade involving a defenceman as the return is slim.

Oh no, no, no. You are seeing some odd things. Take the blue and white shades off. He has no defensive awarness. He loses his man often and is a huge blame for many goals. Gets beat in EVERY battle. Dont know the last time he one a battle or seperated a guy for the puck. He has no foot speed at all, yes he is shifty but its not hard to be shifty is youre not going forward very fast.

As far as Kaberle goes all Burke can do is wait till next summer offer him 3 million for two years. If he finds a better offer he can take it. If he signs for 3 million we have a valuable player.
Kaberle will want 5 million plus a NTC. Let him find another team that will pay him that.

ANd you know all those other teams fans saying how burke is in public, the more i reflect, im starting to agree. Burke is in the media more than all GM’s combined. Serious. Like he tries to deflect heat away fom his roster and what he is doing because he knows he is fucking himself over. the Leafs realistically have 3 to 4 years to win the cup before players will be too expensive and start getting old.

actually i pay a lot of attention to these details and watch replays on Leafs tv to see what i missed the first time around. just like i could never understand the hate for Larry Murphy or the love for Mike Gardener. i wanted to subtract him from the lineup simply to change the way the team plays from the back end, but i will never say Kaberle’s not what i just described.

The problem is you still have to sign another goalie.. We will have a penalty because of bonuses. We have the one million for Tucker. We have to sign our RFA’s. He has to clear cap room soon or the penalty could be a 4 million cap hit. We might have enough for one good UFA forward.

    @ lukethenuke:
gonchar is a powerplay guy with a cannon
kabs is a great outless pass guy and set up man
    both are soft
    but put up great numbers
gonchar slightly more valueable just for the powerplay
which will continue to be useful even as they age

He has more defensive awareness than Exelby and Komi and I don’t think Beauchamin is much better in that regard, he played on the PK a few years ago and on our first pairing with McCabe for up to 30 minutes a game…the guy can play.
    .
Also, Kaberle is pretty fast and one of the quicker-probably our quickest d-man, if its so easy to go around the opposition’s forwards, I don’t see why any of our other defensemen can’t do it?

Go to 1 :53 and watch Kaberle in his own end for the shift. Lost. First example I find and this is what I always see. A huge liability.

Im watching the Leafs in 6 mins and all I see from Kaberle is him not covering his man, not strong infront of the net, no aggression to get puck… its just weak and I dont know man,. I give up. I can see why teams are looking for a Bieksa, Mitchell player over Kaberle.

Gonchar has a big shot. Kaberle has an accurate shot.
    Both elite passers.
Gonchar is scared out of his mind and bails a la Alfredson (seriously). Kaberle has more pride and will take a hit to chip a puck out, but won’t like it.
Gonchar is most likely a hit away from retirement. Kaberle likely has at least 3 or more years left in his prime.
Kaberle is cheaper, at the moment, and if he’s so shit, he should still be cheaper next year, although i doubt it.
Not sure if Gonchar blocks shots or hits. i think an announcer was out of his seat to proclaim one time last year in the playoffs when he blocked a shot. Kaberle is not a shot blocker.
Positionally Gonchar is sound and he anticipates well, but he seemed to jump passes less the last few years than in the pass to turn a transition.
Gonchar is more like Phaneuf on the PP with his passing ability and shot, and perhaps a better passer (like Kaberle).
    How’d i do?

Im going to bed. Ive had it and am pretty disappointed. Im just taking my heat out now and Im sorry if I pissed anyone off. Its just, compare other offensive dman to Kaberle and they all can play d too. Lidstrom, Keith, Doughty. Notice none of these guys are tough. A good comparison to Kaberle is Karlsson on Ottawa. I’m done peace ot boys.

ok, give me another example, haha. this one he was in the exact right position and took the pass on his stick when it was flipped towards the net. it took a fortunate bounce. the leaf along the boards was battling 2 players while another one was lost.
skim ahead to 2 minutes and see how he uses poise, quick feet and courage clears the zone.

    @ Dan hockey fan:
We don’t NEED to sign one. This could easily be facilitated by Reimer(RFA, cheap re-sign) or Rynnas. Monster will be our starting goaltender after this year IMO full-time. How much of a raise can Luke Schenn get that isn’t similar to the money he now earns? Similar with Tyler Bozak for that matter.
Something else to consider: Do we not believe that by the season after next players like Nazem Kadri and Jerry D’Amigo will be occupying full time spots on the roster. I’m amazed at how many people have projected Kadri to be centering the third line this year. BB or RW are going to play him top 6 in the NHL or top 6 in the AHL where he is meant to be. Same with D’Amigo, have we forgotten the WJC already? He will be top 6 material as well.
