Burke Opens Up To Media, Fans Following Post Kaberle

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, ridiculed in some circles, heralded in others, after the way the Tomas Kaberle deal went down, has not been hiding in the shadows after his inability, or unwillingness, to trade the Czech born blue liner.  Burke spoke to the media yesterday and made a variety of statements that should peak the interest of Leafs Nation.

–After telling the Toronto media he wasn’t ever really close to getting a deal he liked for Kaberle, Burke admitted he will sit down with Kaberle’s agent Rick Curran to discuss a possible extension.  These discussions will, of course, be certainly interesting, what with the way Kaberle has been treated by the Toronto media, and also with the slight war or words had between Burke and Curran about a week prior to the no trade deadline.

–Burke also said that he remains committed to not asking a player with a no trade clause to waive during the regular season.  He did point out that if Kaberle and his agent were to approach the GM with a list of potential teams he would allow a trade to, then it would be a different scenario.

–Burke made comments praising the defense of the Toronto Maple Leafs, telling the media he felt they were as good as any team when they are paired together in a group.  He also pointed out that he expects big things from third year player Luke Schenn, who has bulked up to a rather scary 235 pounds.

–Burke stated that Carl Gunnarsson is among the players he enjoyed watching last year, and expects more from in 2010-2011.  He also spoke out the likelihood of sending a one way contract to the minors, and while he wasn’t asked about Jeff Finger, and didn’t mention him throughout the interview, one could only assume Finger will be moved to the Toronto Marlies come October.

–He spoke about the possibility of still working on other deals that came about from the Tomas Kaberle speculation (but deals that did not include Kaberle himself.)

–He spoke very highly of Marcel Mueller and said he has the talent to be a top six forward, but he wasn’t quite there yet.  He also praised the German leagues and said they will likely soon become a strong resource for many teams.

–Burke didn’t mince words when addressing the Bill Sweatt situation.  Burke said he spoke with Sweatt’s representation prior to the deal being made with the Blackhawks, and at that point the agent let it be known that a deal between Sweatt and the Leafs could likely be worked out.  After Burke pulled the trigger on the deal, he claims the agent then upped his demands, leading to a breakdown in discussion, and Sweatt subsequently becoming a free agent.

–He spoke about how impressed he has been with Nazem Kadri, who has bulked up significantly from the previous season.  He stated that Kadri looked good in orientation camp, but it will still be up to him whether he starts this season in the NHL, or the AHL.

–Burke spoke about the possibility of adding other free agents, and spoke of the team’s cap management, claiming that it was a “big advantage” to be half way through August will still a considerable amount of money to spend.

–He confided that the organization was looking for at least a 60 point effort from Mikhail Grabovski this upcoming season.

–He also said that the decision for Jerry D’Amigo to leave RPI and join the Maple Leafs organization early was completely made by Jerry.

  • Bring the Cup Home

schenn needs a bare minimum of 18 minutes of ice time a game this year, from day ONE. no fucking around ron. give him the ice time he needs.

this is going to be the year of luke schenn. he is going to destroy people.

imagine schenn and komisarek on the same line. or schenn and phaneuf.

man, that would scare the hell out of opposing forwards. no where to go…..but down.

Off with a sprained ankle this week. I was channel surfing and came across an episode of “Golden Girls”. Geez that Maude broad (Bea Arthur) is big…big hands, big shoulders…tough…wonder if she plays left wing…could be what we need.

Speaking of big, I was interested to hear BB say Schenn is up to 235 lbs. Here are our top 6 D
    as far as size:
    Komi 6’4 243 Phan 6’3 215 Schenn 6’2 235 Beauch 6′ 207
    Kabs 6’1 198 Gunnar 6’2 190

    Thats BIG.

Your weights are a little off. Gunnarsson came to camp last year at 196, and is likely over 200 by a fair margin by now. Kaberle too got in real good shape for last year, and they listed him at 6’1, 214 pounds. He said he was in the best shape of his life. Hopefully he kept it up this off-season. Fuck, I’m actually getting a little bit pumped about keeping Kaberle.

To WSH: Francois Beauchemin, Darryl Boyce
To TOR: Tomas Fleischammn, 3rd round pick 2011
    -
To STL: Tomas Fleischmann, Jay Rosehill, 3rd round pick 2011 (WSH)
    To TOR: Patrik Berglund
    -
The Leafs dump two contracts that aren’t helping us in Rosehill in Boyce, and the Blues get a DJ King replacement. The Blues get the best current forward in the deal, but the Leafs get the youngest, and highest potential forward. It’s possible that Berglund needs a change of scenery after two coaching staffs soured on him last year. Washington’s needs are well documented.
    -
Sign Kim Johnsson, 1 year, 2.025 million
    -
Come be part of the Swedish contingent of the Toronto Maple Leafs Kim. Join Gunnarsson, Gustavsson, Sjostrom, and Berglund. Coming off a serious concussion? That’s okay, you’ll be well protected by Dion Phaneuf, Colton Orr, Mike Komisarek, Luke Schenn, and many others.
    -
To COL: Christian Hanson, James Reimer, 2nd round pick 2011
    To TOR: Peter Mueller
    -
Hopefully he continues to find himself without a contract. Brian Burke to the rescue. Pretty fair deal for Mueller. I think this trade could easily be either overpayment or underpayment. Either way, the Leafs can afford to add another prospect, or change the deal up. I just think, with Burke reportedly showing interest at the deadline, that he will try to land Peter Mueller while he’s dangling in the wind.
    -
    Berglund – Bozak – Kessel ——————Phaneuf ‘C’ – Schenn
    Versteeg – Kadri – Armstrong ————- Komisarek – Kaberle
    Kulemin – Grabo – Mueller —————— Gunnarsson – Johnsson
    Sjostrom – Mitchell – C.Orr —————– (Lebda)
    (Brown) ——————————————- Gustavsson – Giguere

    CAP HIT – 60.966 million
    -
I think that’s about as sick as our roster can get by the time the season starts.

Malone’s clause gives speculation a pause
by John Fontana on Aug 16, 2010 12:27 PM EDT in The Franchise
    .
“Ryan Malone was at the center of the Tomas Kaberle trade speculation furor. The clause in his contract was the most noteworthy aspect to come from lat night’s Kaberle brouhaha
His name has been thrown around, quite casually, in casual trade speculation since 2009.
    .
Ryan Malone has been a poker chip in play in the minds of media and fans alike. The reasoning has uaually been the contract of his, or the gritty intangibles and what he brings to the game and why other teams would want him… Or the fact he wasn’t scoring many many goals, halting the competition dead, and saving the Princess from King Koopa in a timely fashiion.
    .
Being played-up or played-down, Malone has been portrayed as expendable.
    .
But Ryan has the last laugh. Sunday night revealed to the public that there is a clause in his contract, hindering movement. Something that can’t casually be brushed off.”
    ……………………………………………………………………………………
    .
Ryan Malone can go SCREW HIMSELF! I was planning on making TB my new 2nd favourite team if Tomas Kaberle got traded for him. Now the SELFISH PRICK screws ‘The Bolts’ out of Kaberle!! Malone’s a BIG DOUCHE!!! WE COULDA HAD KABERLE!!!! Malone can go efff himself on the hood ornament of a Rolls Royce!!!!! lol
