Kaberle Trade Pool Results

So it ends, so it continues.  Tomas Kaberle’s tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs did not indeed come to an end this summer.  In an earlier post, I had established a mostly forgotten pool asking the faithful readers to put on their brian burke mask and pretend to be a GM.  Yup, I sure am a trailblazer…suggesting people use the comments section of this site to postulate trade proposals.  Where do I come up with such creative ideas?

100s of trade proposals were thrown out…by Jordan.  A couple more by the rest of you guys.  They ranged from sensible to insane (just look at my prediction).  But in the end, a handful of bright people opined correctly that Kaberle would stay in blue and white.  Without further ado, I would like to congratulate the prognosticator whose mind and timing are without peer; a reader who can sift through the tea leaves and find meaning, who may now benefit from the prestige and honour of being being right.  Congratulations to you, danvertising, and your post:

I honestly don’t think Kaberle will be traded….
.
I just don’t see anyone giving up the young top six forward and first round pick that Burke wants.. And I don’t see Burke trading him for less than what he has already publicly asked for…..

Your shrewd guess has won you the right – in my eyes at least –to veto any ‘book it’ claim.  As per the rules, you have ultimate bragging rights for correctly guessing the conclusion to this media-made soap opera before anyone else.  Unfortunately, again as per the rules, you’ve also…won… an authentic, vintage Bryan McCabe Toronto Maple Leafs jersey.  Contact me at [email protected] to sort out the particulars of getting you this majestic eyesore.

I would like to thank the 3 closest runners up, Troy, Pat.b and smtavare, your predictions and your time are appreciated.  I know it hurts to lose out, it’s never easy…but at least you don’t have to obtain a McCabe jersey.

As a final note of congratulations, I’d like to thank Kostas, as he has provided a lovely door prize:

TO Toronto: No one – Kabs stays becuase Burke wants too much and no one will bite!!

Book it, i’m the winner, you will see!

And then two posts later…

@smtavare

I will guarantee Kabs is gone this summer! In fact, I will put this Bounty chocolate bar that I was planning on eating tonight on the line. If Kabs some how miraculously doesn’t get dealt then I will send you this delicious chocolate bar for calling it.

Danvertising, I hope that you can savour this victory with as much class and civility as this guy.

As per club policy “terms not released”. We’ll know soon enough though. The media finds outeverthing. Right, Mr Kaberle.

I agree with some of you above. How about innocent until proven guilty. Leave the guy alone until we get more info from him or BB.

If you look back on that contest I also said kaberle wouldn’t be traded, but I wasn’t sure that would be accepted so I just went with a trade if that was not accepted. but I did say that i don’t think kaberle would be dealt as well.

Exactly. I think Wilson has also been at the helm of mostly rebuilding teams. All his managers tend to dump him as soon as he gets his team going in the right direction. He’s the right guy to whip young players into shape (for most of them, I know some people find him too harsh, but I think he’s adapted a bit). It’s kind of hard to judge him based on those stats when he had 3 years with an expansion club in Anaheim, two years with absolute shit in Toronto, and a mix bag of talent in between with San Jose and Washington. People forget, San Jose was not a Cup Contender when he arrived. They were when he left, and that was due in large part to Joe Thornton and himself. Patrick Marleau also had his best years under WIlson. He took a fairly mediocre Washington team to the Cup Finals also…

Wouldn’t it just be awesome if D’Amigo could step into the roster this year and have a rookie season like Patrice Bergeron had at the same age – 16G, 23A, 39P, +5. Then, even if you just got an Evander Kane like rookie season from Nazem Kadri – 14G, 12A, 26P, +2, I think suddenly we would have a very competitive offense.
    -
    D’Amigo (16G, 39P) – Bozak (19G, 58P), Kessel (38G, 72P)
    Versteeg (24G, 55P) – Kadri (14G, 26P) – Armstrong (20G, 35P)
    Kulemin (22G, 45P) – Grabo (18G, 55P) – Caputi (12G, 25P)
    Sjostrom (7G, 15P) – Mitchell (11G, 27P) – C.Orr (3G, 7P)
    Brown (4G, 10P)
    -
Man that would be nice to see.

    @ Cameron:
Yep, since most of those guys on that list are employed, retired or dead. Wilson is pretty much the obvious answer for the coaching position… Its a simple question, would you rather a proven winner , or a rookie coach who has not proven anything at the NHL level… I really don’t like how he belittles his players all the time, but if these guys can’t take being called out… well they should go home and cry into their millions…

I think I would feel bad for Wilson if he was let go quickly. I really think he overachieved in his first year here, and then was set up to fail last year. I think Burke made it to obvious to the guys on the ice that they weren’t going to be around very long. I mean, Stajan and all the rest of them saw Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri and Christian Hanson outperform them at training camp, and yet they were handed jobs. They knew they were trade bait. Why would they care about anything Wilson has to say? Burke sabotaged him in my opinion.
    -
Like him, love him, or hate him, this is his dream job, and I really believe him when he says that. I think it would crush him if Burke let him go just as the team is starting to turn the corner. It would be Anaheim all over again.

My take on the F. Kaberle Sr. story is that Tomas probably vented some frustration with his father at some point last season after Wilson called him out in the media and/or Phaneuf arrived and took his job as the number one d-man. Before I get to discussing the fall out I want to say SHAME ON TSN, for their handling of the story. My one beef with the Toronto media as a whole is that they moan and bitch about Burke and the Leafs using the media to their advantage but then throw Burke and the team under the bus anytime they think it will sell more advertising. I am not upset that they broke the story but I am pissed how they portrayed Tomas Kaberle in the story. Does anyone think that Tomas intended for his frustrations to be leaked to the media? I believe Tomas Kaberle is a proud person who would never have wanted this to happen. I am sure that when he vented to his family he felt he was talking in confidence. That is what family is for.

The fall out from this may well end up with Kaberle being traded. I think Kaberle and his agent Curran will end up looking like idiots if they come out and demand to be traded to the destination of their choice now after insisting that Tomas wanted nothing to do with a trade for the last few years. If he ends up moving it will be sold that he had become a distraction and it will likely be painted as a mutual decision between he and Burke. The unfortunate thing is that this chapter will undoubtedly tarnish his many years of faithful service to the Leafs all because his father unwisely spouted his frustrations to the media and a circus ensued.

On the other hand if we discover that this was a manipulation on Kaberle and Curran’s part I hope Burke bury’s him so deep that he never recovers to play in the NHL again!

Exactly, they’re making millions of dollars. I could care less about their feelings, but there is probably a better reason why Wilson should save the comments for behind closed doors in Toronto. I mean, last year he said Kaberle needed to work on improving his plus/minus, and the media turned that into a non stop rant about how Kaberle fallen so far downhill, was incapable defensively, and blah blah blah. You destroy value by talking too much in Toronto.
    -
It’s kind of annoying, because I believe Lidstrom and Suter both struggled out of the gate last year with their plus/minus (it’s rare for them, I know – but it’s also rare for Kaberle, who was never a minus until this rebuild started). But if Barry Trotz were to have said the same thing about Suter, or Babcock the same thing about Lidstrom – “we need him to just calm down, and get the plus minus in order” – no one would have said a thing. But for Kaberle, or any Leaf really, it’s a death sentence.

    @ mitch92:
Kaberle shouldve released a statement saying what his father said isn’t true then, and said that he likes RW and is looking forward to playing, blah blah blah. An he even couldve tried the “lost in translation” card.

Tough to say. I think Benn has the most potential. Neal, for all the accolades MLHS hands him, has done nothing worth noting in his career so far. He’s scored some goals on a very offensively gifted line, with very good linemates. Versteeg has similar goal totals (51G vs 42G in two seasons), but played mostly with John Madden – a marked offensive decline from Brad Richards. He was also 2nd PP unit vs. 1st. I think Versteeg is more skilled than Neal, but Neal’s size might ultimately make him the more effective player. TIme will tell.

Up until last season, Lidstrom has been the best defenseman and most consistent defenseman for many, many years. And his plus/minus is one of the highest of player in the last 2 decades. You ssinf say anything to him. Maybe privately, but probably not.
    Bad example.

He already did that a few months ago when we did this dance the first time. He said “If I hated Ron Wilson so much, why wouldn’t I have just asked for a trade.” Back then, Steve Simmons wouldn’t reveal his source, but in hindsight, it was probably his father shooting his mouth off again.

Kaberle had been one of the most consistent too, if anyone bothered to look. I realize what Lidstrom has achieved, thanks for the lecture though. That was kind of the point. Other good players around the league get a free pass for pretty much anything. Obviously Lidstrom deserves it (although even with him, I doubt he would have been a plus with Toskala in his net), but Kaberle deserves some slack as well…
