Leafs get D Lashoff for Giliati and Berry

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning have made some minor league moves this afternoon, with the Leafs sending Marlies’ forwards Alex Berry and Stefano Giliati in exchange for minor league defenseman Matt Lashoff.

In Lashoff, the Leafs are getting a young, depth guy who will likely play out the year for the Marlies.  A former 1st round Bruins draft pick, Lashoff has some size and offensive skill, but couldn’t translate his ability beyond the AHL level for any extended period of time.  In 63 NHL games between Boston and Tampa, he’s tallied 1 goal and 14 assists and is a career -15.  Still young at 23, he’ll have stiff competition for a spot on the Marlies blue line and a chance at a fresh start after showing promise in both Norfolk and Providence.

The Leafs lose two foot soldiers on the forward ranks in Berry and Giliati.  Meat and potatoes type of players with little NHL upside, they will be missed for the leadership and experience.  However, the move offers more opportunities for up and coming forward prospects such as Jerry D’Amigo, Marcel Mueller and Brayden Irwin.

This is seen by most analysts (Dreger, for example) as a way for the Leafs to offload a contract to open up a space on the 50 man roster.  With a log-jam of AHL ready prospects at forward, this is a minor, albeit important deal for the buds as it will help give some youngsters some ice time.  Further, this deal suggests that Burke might not yet be done with off season signings or trades.  Expect Christian Hanson to be re-signed shortly.

And now, dear readers, I’ll leave you to rampant speculation and trade proposals…

Get off nhl.com’s stats section and actually watch the footage bud. When a turnover ends up in the back of your net, its the defensemans fault.
    .
Then again you’re the guy who was convinced Kaberle could bring in Bobby Ryan or at the very least James Neal ++, based on the points he put up…. And Burke didn’t get offered anything close. So I’m not surprised you continue to talk bullshit like you think you have a clue.

No one’s arguing it was a rough start, but to think that NHL hockey minds actually believe that this somehow equates to Beauchemin being worthless is just absurd. Like you said, there are reasons for the slump, and not just one or two. Wilson was doing weird things for starters. The forwards were lost because they didn’t earn their roster spots but Burke pushed them onto the team anyways. Toskala gave the worst performance of the decade with only Joey MacDonald to back him up. All the new teammates had no chemistry. The list goes on, but the greater sample for the season is the 60 games where he was a minus 2, earning top minutes and playing against nothing but elite talent. Ignoring that isn’t just ignorant, it’s stupid.

Maybe if you watch the games without your bright blue Leafs pom pom’s and come back to reality you’d see those two “veteran” defensemen last year were our worst all season long.

What hockey minds? The same guys who cut Beauchemin from the Olympic squad? Ya he made the World Championship team… And look how bad they did. Just cuz he made a team that played like shit doesn’t make him elite. I hope he bounces back this year, but your cheerleading is ridiculous. He was terrible last year.

I watched the games, I just wasn’t looking to report on every turnover and cry about it later so I could claim Beauchemin was a worthless piece of shit when NHL executives have said otherwise. You’re very quick to point out all these errors, but where were the errors when the team was winning, Beauchemin was a plus, and he was earning top minutes for 60 games? Oh that’s right, you don’t have an answer for that, you only have bullshit to spew.

FIrst of all, I almost always conceded that Kaberle + prospects and picks should merit a young player like Neal in return. I did suggest that Dallas’s financial situation could make Kaberle worth more should the Leafs be able to help them monetarily. This was before they entered into discussions with a new owner though. That being said, I still think Kaberle should net us Neal, who is massively over-rated, and obviously Brian Burke agrees with me or he would have traded him for a pile of garbage like you would have done, I’m fine with being wrong if one of the best GMs in league agrees with me.

Haha, yea, Yzerman and company said he was among the best at the Oympic camp – those hockey minds you fool. I suppose you know better than Yzerman and Messier, and Burke. I mean, after all, you’re danvertising!! Haha. Your memory is short if all you remember about last year was the first 15-20 games. I don’t know if you’re aware, but the team actually played 82 games last season.

Dude are you blind? Yzerman is obviously not going to say he sucked… But the fact that he didn’t come close to making the team says enough. And Messier? That was Messier’s first ever time being a GM and putting a team together and the team bombed. Being a great player does not equal a great GM… I think Canada’s performance at the World’s is a good indicator of this.
    .
I have better things to do today than argue this with you… So keep doing your one sided trafe proposals till the cows come home….. They’re never gonna happen.

Hahahahhaha you are so out to lunch its insane…. “Burke agrees with me” because he didn’t trade Kaberle for a player like Neal…. There was no way he was even offered that….
    .
Where were the mistakes when the team was winning? Geeeeeezus, they finished 29th with him eating up all those minutes….
    .
Talk to ya later buddy… Keep on dreaming….

Again, if you could use common sense, you would be able to figure out that the team finished that low because of that first 15 game stretch. They played at a playoff pace after that. What’s the greater sample size, 15, or 67 games? Can you even figure that out? But you’re right, probably better to assume Beauchemin’s worthless because of those first 15 games. Hey, Lidstrom was a minus during the first stretch of the season too. I guess no one would want him though. He totally sucked last year.

Haha, oh boy, come back when you can use logic.
