Marlies Prospects in 2010-11: Defensemen
Share

We’ve taken a look at the front end of the depth on the Marlies. Now it’s time to take a look at the back end. Defense is perhaps the strongest part of this year’s Marlies squad, mirroring the look of the Leafs in that respect. Let’s take a look:

Korbinian Holzer

Position: D

Bio: Holzer has more than just an awesome name. At age 22, Holzer has just come from an impressive DEL season in Germany, getting 22 points in 52 games. He has a sizable frame at 6’3” and 205 pounds and is not afraid to lay out a good check now and then. Holzer is likely the Leafs’ D prospect closest to earning a NHL spot, with a few games in place of injured players likely this season.

Estimated totals if he plays the full season: 8 goals, 36 assists, 44 points

Juraj Mikus

Position: D

Bio: Mikus was a bit of an unknown going into the 09-10 season. He had received very little ice time in the top Slovakian league, earning just 5 points in 08-09. However, the now 21 year old surprised many fans, putting up a respectable 5 goals and 23 points for the Marlies last season in his rookie year in North America. Mikus needs to add muscle to his frame (6’4”, 201 lbs.) and will be challenged to improve his totals this season if he has aspirations of being a powerplay quarterback in the future.

Estimated totals if he plays the full season: 9 goals, 29 assists, 38 points

Keith Aulie

Position: D

Bio: Aulie was an understated but substantial part of the Phaneuf trade late last season. Drafted in the fourth round in 2007, Aulie plays the role of shutdown defenseman. Aulie is believed by many to have a long and fruitful career in the NHL ahead of him, so don’t be surprised if he’s on the Leafs sooner rather than later. Aulie is currently recovering from shoulder surgery and may get off to a slow start in 2010-11.

Estimated totals if he plays the full season: 2 goals, 11 assists, 13 points

Matt Lashoff

Position: D

Bio: Lashoff has yet to live up to his draft position, being taken 22nd overall in 2005 by the Boston Bruins. Lashoff has played 63 games in the NHL, but was unable to crack a bad defense core in Tampa Bay last season. Now in his third NHL organization, Lashoff needs to start showing improvement if he has hopes of being a full time NHL player.

Estimated totals if he plays the full season: 10 goals, 23 assists, 33 points

Simon Gysbers

Position: D

Bio: Gysbers was recently acquired as one of Burke’s “free wallets” in the NCAA. He’s a relative unknown, but plays a defense first style of game, similar to Luke Schenn or Keith Aulie. It is obvious that the organization has high hopes for Gysbers, as Burke made sure to mention his name as being a candidate for a roster spot on the Leafs this year. That may be a little presumptuous, but Gysbers could develop into a solid third pairing defender down the line.

Estimated totals if he plays the full season: 1 goal, 10 assists, 11 points

Drew Paris

Position: D

Bio: Paris is the only defensive prospect on the Marlies without a NHL contract. He went undrafted and unsigned in his QMJHL career, putting up decent offensive numbers. The 09-10 season was Paris’ first pro year and he certainly made the most of it. He played 68 games for Gwinnett in the ECHL, putting up 12 goals and 45 points. This earned him a contract with the Marlies, where he played the final 2 games of the season, getting 1 goal and 2 assists. As is often the case with this type of defenseman, Paris is questionable on the defensive side of the game. If he continues to improve, don’t be surprised if he earns a NHL contract with the Leafs at some point this season.

Estimated totals if he plays the full season: 12 goals, 23 assists, 35 points

Likely to spend time on the Reading Royals of the ECHL: Drew Paris

Veteran defenseman: Danny Richmond

“LW Raffi Torres was signed in late August to add some much needed grit to the Canucks’ third line. But the hard-hitting 28-year-old has shown enough flashes of finish in the past to warrant a serious look among the top-6 forwards, especially with top-line winger Alex Burrows expected to miss at least the first month of the season — and possibly much longer –recovering from June surgery to repair a torn shoulder labrum.”

Reading this, I am thinking (of Forrest Gump, no just kidding) to myself: doesn’t this sound like something we needed?

Yeah, but what really intrigued me was “the hard-hitting 28-year-old has shown enough flashes of finish in the past to warrant a serious look among the top-6 forwards…” Now, if that is true for the Canucks, it is certainly much more the case for our lineup. Can’t really understand why we didn’t go after him…. I mean it’s not like he lacks truculence, belligerence and pugnacity. Is Burke getting soft in his old age?

“Henrik Zetterberg married his longtime girlfriend, Swedish TV personality Emma Anderson, on July 23 in Sweden. Several teammates attended the ceremony. It included a swimming party for the guests, who donned old-fashioned, one-piece black-and-white striped bathing suits.”

That ain’t news, but that too is reality!

You can edit your team as far ahead as you want. You don’t need to check it every day. I usually go ahead two to three weeks. Then if I get tied up or just forget to check I know I’m covered.

Sep 10 C Cody Hodgson finally might be able to put last season’s back injury — and the resulting rumors of a rift with the Canucks — behind him. The rumblings began during last year’s preseason, when Hodgson told the media pain in his back was giving him trouble generating any power in his skating stride, and head coach Alain Vigneault responded by saying Hodgson had been cleared medically and suggesting he might be using the injury as an excuse for his poor play. The situation was exacerbated when Hodgson, the 10th overall pick in 2008, was sent back to junior but instead sought a second medical opinion that revealed a bulging disk. Hodgson, who was first hurt while working out with Canucks’ development director Sam Gagner, went on record as saying he would train with his own people and on his own program, furthering talk of problems between the team and its top prospect. Despite working with a renowned back specialist and returning to junior late in the season, Hodgson was still feeling discomfort in his lower back, however. It wasn’t until he returned to Vancouver to see the Canucks’ doctors at the end of last season that they discovered the problem was really a torn muscle in his lower back, something missed by both sides in past examinations.

Sep 9 Canucks general manager Mike Gillis revealed on Wednesday the back injury that sidelined Hodgson for most of the OHL season last year was a tear in his lower back and not the previously diagnosed bulging disk, the Vancouver Province reports.
Recommendation: This helps explain why the injury lingered for so long. Hodgson will now likely be held out of next week’s prospect tournament and his status for training camp is up in the air. The Canucks will complete their medical evaluation of Hodgson on Thursday before determining the next step for their top prospect.
