Leafs Young Guns Draft

Join us in the comments as Alex Tran and I go head-to-head carving up the Leafs youth.

(Note**) – for the record I will be making the picks for each of us as Alex is boozing busting loose at some bar. I asked him if he was drunk, he said no, but his picks will tell show us the truth.

In the spirit of ranking the organization’s top young talent (prospects + established NHLers), Gus and I will be facing off tonight at approximately 10pm EST in a 1 on 1 drafting session of Maple Leaf players who are 24 years of age or younger (1986 birthdays and on).

Gus IS the Pro Scouting Coordinator for Mckeen’s Hockey, so I will have my work cut out for me, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. We will be selecting 6 forwards, 4 defensemen, and 1 goaltender each for a total of 22 young players with approximately 1 minute pauses between each pick. Contract status and/or cap hit will not be taken into account as this is purely an evaluation of performance and potential.

The draft will take place live in the comments section for all readers to follow, so be sure to come out and provide your two cents as it happens. Following the draft, the MLHS community will have the opportunity to vote to decide which crop of young players they would most like to move forward with.

All this talk you guys have had about shipping Kadri here, or sending D’Amigo there – calm the hell down. Regardless of the outcome, it was pretty clear in both games Kadri was in, that he was far and away the most skilled player on the ice. Everything that happened or didn’t happened was pretty much to be expected if you ask me. Overplaying , and overthinking, and slow starts are all part of Kadri’s well known criticisms. Let’s see what these guys do in the NHL training camp before we make hasty decisions for managers and coaches that know far more about hockey.

Also, it’s insane to think that if a player gets sent down after a try in the NHL, that his career is effected detrimentally. I guess Alex Pietrangelo is ruined then. Evander Kane was useless for long stretches – guess that means he never should have been in the NHL. Steven Stamkos couldn’t buy a point in his rookie year, but I guess he learned nothing from that experience. It also clearly ruined him to have him sit out every 2nd game in his rookie season for the last third of the season. Kadri and D’Amigo would in all likelihood not dominate the AHL. Kadri inparticular is a player who rises to his competition, and the AHL would be slow, and unpredictable – it would be Bozak all over again. You can do whatever you want with a player, so long as the reasoning is communicated to him clearly.

I kinda hope the leafs have a bad pre-season… It seems like every year they have a good pre season and then shit the bed at the start of the regular season. So maybe it will be the opposite.

    @ SicTransitGloria:
I had a lot more to say but it got deleted, so I dont feel like retyping it. It read something like I don’t think there is any evidence that going straight to the NHL can stunt a young mans growth… Look at Kessel he went straight to the NHL, had a mediocre season, but it didnt ruin him… If the rookie cant handle being sent down, then they probably could not make it in this league anyway,.. With that said If the player is not ready fogodsake keep him in the AHL but Kadri almost made the team last year, I’m sure he will be fine this year.

    @ Cameron:
I haven’t read a damn thing since last night but that pretty much sums up everything I need to know. Great post and really puts in perspective what will most likely happen to Kadri and D’Amigo. Good things come to those who wait, and I would love to see both of them start the season with the Leafs and tear it up. But in reality they should both spend time in the minors. Too many solid NHL players have played in the AHL at some point in their career and can only benefit our young stars.

If Kadri starts with the Marlies, I’d definetly like to see Burke sign Morrison or another free agent to center the third line.
    .
    Would you be happy with:
    Kulemin – Bozak – Kessel
    MacArthur – Grabovski – Versteeg
    Sjostrom – Hanson – Armstrong
    Brown – Mitchell – Orr

Kadri will make the team I think just simply because his shootout and PP ability. He’s gonna probably start with armstrong and someone to get going
IMO Hanson and his 2-way will be the one out until injury.
    Macarther-Bozak-Kessel
    Kulemin-Grabovski-Versteeg
    Sjostrom/Hanson-Kadri-Armstrong
    Brown-Mitchell-Orr
That makes sense to me. Versteeg and Kulemin should get the most out of Grabovski and that was our problem last year. He has no linemates. So if you covered Bozak-Kessel (kulemin too by default) the you beat the 2009-2010 leafs lol

so where are Jussi Rynnas and Ben Scrivens going to be spending there time with the most?
with the Marlies along with Reimer in the AHL or do they get some time with the Reading Royals of the ECHL? or even a split between them? whats the word
    My guess would be:
    Toronto Maple Leafs
    J.S. Gigeure
    Jonas Gustavsson
    Toronto Maplies
    James Reimer
    Jussi Rynnas
    Reading Royals
    Ben Scrivens
    Andrew Engelage

my guess is Burke does something with Reimer and makes room for Scrivens with the Marlies – Mr Burke is loyal to his guys and Reimer is not his guy.. just my gut instinct – kinda curious how this plays out actually..

Interesting opinions on the rookies. I read one position and agree with it, then someone else comes up with other viable points to change my mind somewhat. I guess if the Leafs were an expansion team that needed to sell seats they might be forced to start a kid like Kadri in the NHL as a way of selling tickets. The Leafs have the luxery of sold out attendance, so they can be prudent with their young talent.

I think though that every player is different, Bozak for example played better once he got his chance in the NHL, however he was the first to admit that starting with the Marlies was the best thing for him In his case, the half season albeit an injured one did him good, but he really didn’t shine until he got called up.
    -
I think Wilson got burned last year in that he had some veterans he had to play in order to appease management and showcase their talents for eventual trades. This talk about burying contracts in the minors never came to be. I think Wilson is eager to go with youngsters and BB likes competition and earning spots, so I believe guys like Mitchell, Hanson, and Caputi will get about 10 to 20 games to show they belong, if they are not performing, then Kadri, and maybe Mueller, would be called up after about 20 to 30 games in the AHL. I think D’Amigo has progressed really well but needs a full year with the Marlies to hone his game. Other than those 3, the only other forward that seemed somewhat close was Ryan as a possible short term 3rd or 4th line winger callup.
    -
Once again, its so nice not to have to discuss goaltending or D callups, we are outstanding in that regard.
