Alex and I will once again continue the Young Guns prospect draft. We are drafting:

6 9 forwards, 4 defensemen, 1 goaltender
Total of 22 young players with a birthday year no later than 1986 (24 yrs old max)
Contract status and/or cap hit will not be taken into account

The draft will take place live in the comments section for all readers to follow, so be sure to come out and provide your two cents as it happens. More details after the jump.

The intention of this exercise isn’t as a fantasy draft, it’s not the accumulation of points. We’re essentially carving the Leafs prospects into two sides and evaluating which of the two squads has more appeal.

Alex had first pick overall .. The following players have already been drafted from last night’s failed attempt. (Alex says his phone died .. in a bar .. with beer .. right.)

Forwards – Kadri, Versteeg, D’Amigo

Does anyone besides me think Eakins is an under-rated part of the Leafs development system?

After some strong rookie play at camp last year, Burke gave the veterans a chance.
    Leafs never recovered.

He goes with his best out of the chute this year and if that includes D’amigo and Khadri, so be it.

I don’t get why he can’t work a deal for Brad Richards.

    @ Ensign:
yeah i don’t think guys play without a contract. i’m sure the league and PA would both not allow that.
    @ corykc11:
well you never know the way people here dream sometimes haha. the team still owns his rights but after a few years when he gets to a certain age maybe something changes, but i doubt it.
he’d sit out and train with a junior team somewhere if he didn’t sign i am assuming.

Easy to say the Devils are up to something..but what would we give? Parise would be what we would want but that would take at least Schenn.

I’d make that trade in a heartbeat.
    .
i’d trade anyone other than Phaneuf for Parise. That’s a franchise winger there.

    @ SicTransitGloria:
yeah that’s logical, but i want to see the team somehow get better with young Luke int he mix.
I’d be okay with the aging Langenbrunner. Leafs don’t have much CAP space to help the Devils without putting themselves in a position to have to dump players. i guess if we’re picking up better expensive players than we’re giving away we do it.

I’d do upwards of Gunnerson+Grabovski+Caputi for Parise as well…
    .
or Schenn+ any of the three above.
    .
Parise on the Left and Kessel on the Right…. would be about 80-100 goals just between those two… plus Bozak would have the easiest year of his life…

I think the leafs finished the year as THE youngest team in the NHL, So I think they may be even younger to start this season

    @ dlb:
I just found this on a message board, I havent actually checked the CBA lol, but this is what I found

As per the CBA if a RFA player remains unsigned after Dec 1st of current season he is ineligible to play that year in the NHL. But his player rights remain with his current team and he is just classified as an unsigned RFA player.

He can play in Europe or the AHL but not in the NHL.

So its an incentive if the player doesn’t want to lose a year of NHL opportunity to come to a contract agreement with his team before that time, but he gains little from sitting out the year.

    About the RFA/Neal status:

I’m fairly certain after losing the year, the player becomes a UFA. So it’s a hard way to do it, but if no agreement is reached after Dec. then the player will not play that year but then could sign anywhere else.

the first line cmparison isn’t as black and white as you seem to think. The Kadri D’amigo Verseeg line may have better long term upside than the Kulemin Bozak Kessel line.

I hear from a close personal friend that the Oilers and Rangers are in serious talks about moving unwanted bodies. You may see Souray for Redden very soon.
