Preseason Game #7: Toronto at Ottawa

The Leafs head to the capital tonight to take on their bitter provincial rivals, the Ottawa Senators, for the third time in seven preseason games.

Tonight’s game figures to be the last chance for players on the bubble, including highly-touted Nazem Kadri, to make a lasting impression. When asked about these players, head coach Ron Wilson was emphatic:

“When the puck drops on the first day, you better be ready to go. No tip-toeing around. No ‘oh, the water’s cold, I’ll wait until it warms up a bit’. Nope, you’re diving in and the guys who didn’t, as [Leafs' GM Brian Burke] said, they’re waiting by the bus stop. Well, they missed it, the bus already left. Now their job is running down the road hoping they can get on.” (via)

With the pre-season set to end with a home-and-home against Detroit to open the month of October, the general sentiment is the Leafs will use a roster for those games comprised of the players who are expected be with the NHL club on opening night. For Nazem Kadri, John Mitchell, Jay Rosehill and Mike Zigomanis, tonight (or by a slim chance the first of the two Detroit games) may be their last shot.

Pregame News & Notes

  • Fredrick Sjostrom will make his return from shoulder surgery tonight.
  • Luke Schenn has a minor back ailment and will not play tonight.
  • Jeff Finger continues to nurse a knee injury and will once again remain on the sidelines.
  • Mike Brown gets a rest day today, as does Jonas Gustavsson. Also sitting this one out are Kris Versteeg and Danny Richmond, who will practice with the team before flying to Chicago to receive their Stanley Cup rings.
  • Accordingly, Jay Rosehill will replace Brown and James Reimer will be the backup goaltender tonight.
  • In Versteeg’s absence, Kadri is expected to play left wing on the top line with Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel. To accommodate Richmond’s absence, Korbinian Holzer – previously sent to the Marlies – has been recalled.
  • One of Clarke MacArthur or Nikolai Kulemin is also likely to be given a rest, in which case Luca Caputi (who will lose his regular spot to Sjostrom) would become the replacement on the second line.
  • Speaking of whom, it would come as a shock if Caputi, who has had an encouraging preseason, does not survive the final cuts.
  • Tim Brent has been quietly impressive, and barring an exceptional effort by Kadri or Mitchell should have the third-line centre role all but locked down for the time being.
  • Rumours continue to persist that the Leafs will look to add a veteran centre to the mix at some point during the early part of the season given the relative inexperience at the position (Grabovski has the most NHL experience at 2 years and counting). With a couple players sent back to Junior, there is once again room under the 50-contract limit. Cap space is another story, and will continue to bar the Leafs from making any moves until a solution is figured out.
  • And finally: it is far from a catastrophe if Nazem Kadri does indeed get demoted to the AHL. Despite certain writers’ attempts to convince us that the city will revert to mob rule if he is, the fact remains that each player develops at his own pace, and a longer developmental curve does not impact one’s overall career.  Current Ducks’ stars Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan — who developed under Burke’s watch — can attest to the value of additional AHL/CHL time. And, love him or hate him, starting his career off in the AHL certainly had a positive impact on the career of Ottawa’s Jason Spezza. This faux panic is much ado about nothing, as Shakespeare would say. Well, other than selling papers that is.

Expected Lineup (per Jonas Siegel)

Kadri – Bozak – Kessel
(Caputi/MacArthur) Grabovski (Caputi/Kulemin)
Sjostrom – Brent – Armstrong
Orr – Mitchell – Rosehill

Beauchemin – Phaneuf
Kaberle – Komisarek
Gunnarsson – Holzer

Giguere
Reimer

The hate for RW on these posts is wild! “He could have smiled ..” WOW

Good show by Tim Brent. Good to see these guys who were pencilled in with the farm before the start of camp bring it and make the team (I know the team is not set yet). Kadri can learn from a guy like Tim Brent.

Considering that apparently Sheldon Souray was placed on waivers today, does anyone think he’d be a good pick up for the Leafs?
Imagine this beast of a defense:
    Phaneuf – Beauchemin
    Kaberle – Komisarek
    Souray – Schenn

    @ Sk8trBoi:

You know i was thinking about that to and its not that bad of a Idea HOWEVER

1st Finger has to be sent down

2nd Beauchmenin would most defenlty have to be traded to add to our Fowards

3rd it would have to be on Re entry waivers. 2.7 million cap(after reentry) hit for Souray for 2 years is not that bad of a deal. Fingers deal is alot worse than that.

    Phaneuf / Komi
    Souray / Schenn
    Kaberle / Gunner

    PP # 1 Phaneuf / Kaberle
    PP # 2 Souray / Gunner

When and if Kaberle Souray / Phaneuf on the PP could be very very lethal it would REALY open up the down low game beacuse teams would be very worried about both of them guys blasting from the point

I don’t think it would ever happen, I just think it would strike fear into the hearts of teams (especially Montreal) if they thought they had to contend with those dudes for 60 minutes.

For the life of me, I don’t understand how Mac is in reality ahead of Kadri if Kadri repeats a strong performance on the wing against Detroit. I don’t think there is any comparison-Mac is a journeyman now with a limited skill set

I also don’t understand RW’s thoughts on Brent at all

wonder what RW will think if the Leafs go 4-6 the first 10 games with Mac and Brent turning in meh performances

I dont agree with Ron Wilsons style. But I don’t agree with you ripping the fine posters on here and opening with a comment that we have no clue and all of us would be terrible coaches. All of us. Not one or two…all of us…. You are a condescending prick and I can tolerate that from regular posters and perhaps my wife…but you …not a chance Todd (aka Gill).
    -
And I just blew it by reading and responding to your post.
    -
But I didn’t insult you. I just stated a fact. You have no clue. Not your fault…genetics.

haha, you get pretty worked up over an anonymous post on a message board. What do you do when someone cuts you off in traffic?

And it’s called a parlance. Clever people would know I didn’t mean everyone. Wtf? haha Similar to when people say “hey guys”, that person is also speaking to women in the room.

You must be a real treat to be around.

    @ Jordan:
I could live with those combinations, though I would prefer Kadri on the first line with Versteeg and Kulemin on the 2nd.I just think that the Leafs without Kadri are strong enough offensively.

I like that they put Kadri on the 2nd line for the next game. Need to see if he can play in that role too, because you can’t just throw him on the first line against every team in the league right away.
Also with all the Wilson hate, I don’t get it. They are lowering expectations, especially since he may not be ready for the NHL yet, who knows he may be ready in a month or two. People need to relax, and this is coming from a Kadri/Knights fan.

I would have liked to see Capui given a chance on the top line with Bozak and Kessel. Seconde line of Grabovski with Kulemin and Kadri. Drop Versteeg down to center the third line (for tommorow night only) with Sjostrom and Armstrong.
That way Burke and Wilson would be able to decide whether they should keep Kadri or Caputi around as a top six winger.
