Preseason Game #7: Toronto at Ottawa

The Leafs head to the capital tonight to take on their bitter provincial rivals, the Ottawa Senators, for the third time in seven preseason games.

Tonight’s game figures to be the last chance for players on the bubble, including highly-touted Nazem Kadri, to make a lasting impression. When asked about these players, head coach Ron Wilson was emphatic:

“When the puck drops on the first day, you better be ready to go. No tip-toeing around. No ‘oh, the water’s cold, I’ll wait until it warms up a bit’. Nope, you’re diving in and the guys who didn’t, as [Leafs' GM Brian Burke] said, they’re waiting by the bus stop. Well, they missed it, the bus already left. Now their job is running down the road hoping they can get on.” (via)

With the pre-season set to end with a home-and-home against Detroit to open the month of October, the general sentiment is the Leafs will use a roster for those games comprised of the players who are expected be with the NHL club on opening night. For Nazem Kadri, John Mitchell, Jay Rosehill and Mike Zigomanis, tonight (or by a slim chance the first of the two Detroit games) may be their last shot.

Pregame News & Notes

  • Fredrick Sjostrom will make his return from shoulder surgery tonight.
  • Luke Schenn has a minor back ailment and will not play tonight.
  • Jeff Finger continues to nurse a knee injury and will once again remain on the sidelines.
  • Mike Brown gets a rest day today, as does Jonas Gustavsson. Also sitting this one out are Kris Versteeg and Danny Richmond, who will practice with the team before flying to Chicago to receive their Stanley Cup rings.
  • Accordingly, Jay Rosehill will replace Brown and James Reimer will be the backup goaltender tonight.
  • In Versteeg’s absence, Kadri is expected to play left wing on the top line with Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel. To accommodate Richmond’s absence, Korbinian Holzer – previously sent to the Marlies – has been recalled.
  • One of Clarke MacArthur or Nikolai Kulemin is also likely to be given a rest, in which case Luca Caputi (who will lose his regular spot to Sjostrom) would become the replacement on the second line.
  • Speaking of whom, it would come as a shock if Caputi, who has had an encouraging preseason, does not survive the final cuts.
  • Tim Brent has been quietly impressive, and barring an exceptional effort by Kadri or Mitchell should have the third-line centre role all but locked down for the time being.
  • Rumours continue to persist that the Leafs will look to add a veteran centre to the mix at some point during the early part of the season given the relative inexperience at the position (Grabovski has the most NHL experience at 2 years and counting). With a couple players sent back to Junior, there is once again room under the 50-contract limit. Cap space is another story, and will continue to bar the Leafs from making any moves until a solution is figured out.
  • And finally: it is far from a catastrophe if Nazem Kadri does indeed get demoted to the AHL. Despite certain writers’ attempts to convince us that the city will revert to mob rule if he is, the fact remains that each player develops at his own pace, and a longer developmental curve does not impact one’s overall career.  Current Ducks’ stars Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan — who developed under Burke’s watch — can attest to the value of additional AHL/CHL time. And, love him or hate him, starting his career off in the AHL certainly had a positive impact on the career of Ottawa’s Jason Spezza. This faux panic is much ado about nothing, as Shakespeare would say. Well, other than selling papers that is.

Expected Lineup (per Jonas Siegel)

Kadri – Bozak – Kessel
(Caputi/MacArthur) Grabovski (Caputi/Kulemin)
Sjostrom – Brent – Armstrong
Orr – Mitchell – Rosehill

Beauchemin – Phaneuf
Kaberle – Komisarek
Gunnarsson – Holzer

Giguere
Reimer

i was hoping for grabo to be BETTER this year , still believe there is a chance for him.
i always liked him and always will. but , his last 2 games have not been good at all.
gives the puck away too often , knocked/falls down too often ,
no one can say his last 2 games he has legitimately looked like the leafs number 2 centre. HE HAS NOT . sorry , he just hasnt.
i really wished grabo and macarthur would have been spectacular and earned the spots outright , because then , it would be easy to send kadri down to marlies .
the fact that no one has really stepped up and earn a 2nd line top 6 role is what is keeping kadri on team , and has me very worried.
Not sure if you are aware of this or not but MacArthur has 4 pts in 4 games and Grabs has 4 in 5 games

I know Mac has 4 pts in 4 games and Grabo has 4 pts in 5 games. I’m very aware of that. The thing is, I can’t honestly say that Macarthur has been more impressive than Caputi. Really, Mac hasn’t been bad by any means, it’s just that the main guy or guys he’s competing with have been better than he has, frankly. Because of the fact that Macarthur is playing ok but not well, this is causing a lot of problems as to who makes it and who plays where on the Leafs.

As for Grabo’s 4 pts in 5 games, this is a classic illustration that points don’t always tell the whole story as to how well a guy has necessarily played. For me, Grabo’s had 2 good games and 1 meh game and 2 pretty bad games. Therefore, 3 not so good games (including this one very much). In his bad games (and a good number of his good games too, for that matter), he simply gives up the puck WAY too much (both forced and during a lot of unforced occasions as well), and that’s absolutely been by far and away his biggest problem.

That said, Grabo’s all but locked up the 2nd-line centre spot, not because he’s been THAT good this preseason (overall because of his bad mixed with good games, he’s been OK, barely), but rather because we don’t have anyone else good enough to produce any better there.

Grabo is the classic case of an up-and-down player. Even an enigma, if you will. If that dude’s not producing, more often than not he stands out in a bad way worse than any of our other guys do most of the time.

I’d say it was worth the trip. The emerald and ruby tomahawks on the side are a nice touch!

Souray meanwhile could well be headed for that rare option, re-entry waivers. Probably claimed there. May see more re-entry claims this year

If or when Kadri makes the team we have options. It does give us good ballance on 3 lines and we know RW will switch things around anyway. Luckily we have some players who are able to fill different roles as the talent level rises or we get hit with injuries. So you want Rosie, eh.

Much better options available then Gerber, even bringing back Emery would be better he played really well for them when he wasnt hurt.

Nazem Kadri is in again tomorrow and will play with Grabovski and Kulemin. Clarke MacArthur has a sore groin and won’t play.

Yeah, IMO Rosehill fills a specific role as an ‘energy’ winger/enforcer, and won’t really develop any further with a longer stint down on the farm anyway. If he practices with the big club he’ll be that much more ready and prepared when he’s needed in games to provide that element of truculence.
I’ll say it again, I really liked those lines!
