Development Isn’t a Life Sentence

It is by no means the end of his career, strictly the next step.

On Monday, Nazem Kadri, 7th overall selection in the 2009 draft, was assigned to the Toronto Marlies. The player in whom a whole city had welcomed, became enamoured with and inked into their own starting lineup will not appear at ACC at all… at least not yet. It will prove to be a powerful lesson for the 19 year old, if not the whole city of Toronto; the Toronto Maple Leafs are about winning hockey games, not necessarily selling tickets.

It seems like a simple principle, I know, but for the people of Toronto this comes as a revelation.

For years fans have leaned heavily on the complaint that the Maple Leafs brass live happily icing mediocrity. That the importance of regular season success was diminished by financial prosperity. With the assignment of Kadri to the Marlies, Brian Burke, Leafs’ President and General Manager, sent the firm message that no longer can truth be found in that complaint.

Sure, Kadri would sell more sweaters than Tim Brent and draw bigger crowds than Clarke MacArthur – but fan base is not part of the equation. With the assignment of Kadri to the AHL, all were told that there were more talented top-six forwards and harder working bottom-six players. In order for the Toronto Maple Leafs to win games, Nazem is to be sent down. For Kadri to develop into the player which his potential holds – an offensively gifted top-six centre with the tenacity to run any opponent through the end boards – he must tread in the footsteps of many before him.

The AHL has been has been developing top-end talent for 75 years, and for Kadri it’s the perfect stop on his way to being an NHL regular. Tyler Bozak, Viktor Stalberg and Carl Gunnarsson are among the NHL’ers that played with the Marlies just this past season. The foundations of the Red Wings organization is built on steady development through their AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. There’s a lot to be said for prospects getting a taste of the pro life without the pressure that the NHL holds.

]Dallas Eakins, Head Coach of the Toronto Marlies, couldn’t be a better tutor for the teenage Kadri. Having been with the Maple Leafs organization for the past four seasons, Eakins spent a considerable amount of time as the team’s Director of Player Development. Having plucked Eakins from an office down the hall to name him Head Coach, Brian Burke has complete faith that the Dallas is the perfect man to develop his prospects.

The Marlies training facially is located in the same building, and directly across the hall, from the Leafs. On the ice the Marlies are often conditioned by Leafs’ Graeme Townshend, and in the gym Anthony Belza, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the buds, will have a personalized workout regimen for Nazem. This extra step will not be a hindrance, but rather a benefit.

And at the end of it, one year from now when we examine the development of the London-native, Kadri will have vastly improved – no question. He will be better prepared to join the NHL, and help continue a pattern of winning for the Maple Leafs.

Development is for the Marlies but right now, it’s all about winning for the Leafs.

Note: Brian Burke also announced today that Christian Hanson (F), Luca Caputi (F) and Jussi Rynnas (G) have been assigned to the AHL Marlies. Jay Rosehill (F) and Danny Richmond (D) have also been assigned to the Toronto AHL club pending they first clear waivers.

Wouldn’t Alexander Steen look great as the 3rd line center right now??
I’ll never understand the Coliacovo and Steen for Stempniak trade, stupid Fletcher!!

I’d say that comment is more directed towards Christian Hansons situation. He easily outplayed Johnny Mitchell.

I think a player profile is in order for Brent. I will be honest and say that aside from seeing him in NHL 10-11 I have no real knowledge of the guy. I’m saving my opinion on the guy untill I watch a few games and see what he can really bring to the table.

I actually liked Stempniak and I’m glad to see him do well elsewhere. He was the one player who stood out when I actually went to the ACC because he would always finish his checks. But certain players don’t fit certain systems and alongside the invasive media focus, Stempy never found his scoring touch in blue.
Steen’s and Stempniak’s career numbers are none to different, which of course would have made a straight up deal more sensible but at the time Carlo was the D-man made of glass.

Well first off I will say this. I have never had any faith in the pre-season and am not surprised by the cut’s. I thought Hanson might get the chance on the 4th line and Mitchell would start on the bench.
    .
Now I have defended Mitchell on this site(while remaining indifferent on him), and there a few reason’s he made this team. And one of them is not his preseason lol. They are as follow’s.
-last 15 Gp last year 2 G 8 A 10 Pts(they often say at the end of the year is when you’re fighting for a spot the next year, it’s easily more important than the bloated pre-season. John Mitchell showed up for those game’s and was rewarded)
-Mitchell is an excellent penalty-killer. I’m baffled when I hear otherwise. Although I agree his 5 on 5 play isn’t as good as it should be. The evidence of his great penalty-killing is 90 minute’s of PK duty only 4 goals scored against. That is insane for a good penalty killing team, let alone the worst in the league.
-Mitchell is proven. They know what he bring’s. Which is a good attitude and a good locker room presence. With some skill(I emphasize some). 136 Gp 18 G 34 A 52 Pts is pretty consistent with most third-liner’s around the league.
-51.2% on draw’s isn’t bad at all. Usually player’s improve at this with time(see Grabovski). So Burke and Wilson probably see him as a good face-off guy that can play Center or Wing
-Burke love’s Mitchell. During Burkie’s first year when asked who were untouchables going into the trade deadline he replied with a simple “Luke Schenn and John Mitchell”. It wasn’t simply a rookie thing either cause he didn’t include Kulemin’s name in their. This speak’s volume’s of how much Burke think’s of Mitchell
-Also really good on shootout’s. Kessel, Kulemin, and Mitchell are our 3 shooter’s.
    .
Now quite honestly do I think Mitchell should have made the team? Yes, I do. But I really thought it was going to be as the extra forward. Do I think Hanson should have made the team? Yes, it must be dissapointing for him. But I expect him to be back soon. Do I think Caputi should have made the team? No, he started off really well in the pre-season and continually got worse. Played horrible in the 1st Detroit game. Which I think got him cut, if it wasn’t for that game he might have snuck by.
    .
One more reason why Mitchell made the team

I always liked what Therrien would do when people tried roughing up Crosby, icing Bill Thomas or Paul Bissonette alongside him. Orr is an anchor on the firstline but Brown could certainly ice on the top 2 if a team was taking liberties.

I just had a long reply typed up, but the internet fucked up and I lost it. Basically the jist of it is that if Brent can put up 30-40 points I will be pumped. Wallin had like 10. I will take a hardcore checker any day, but with the lack of scoring we have, I’d prefer to have one that can put a few in the net. I do agree keeping them out is just as important… especially for a 3rd line checker, it’d be more important not to get score on than to put up points.

I believe Burke wants to give him fair chance as opposed to being a spare part. That way a club who could use Ziggy can pick him up and release a roster spot on the Leafs or Burke has demonstrated good faith in giving a player the opportunity to see if his services would be suited elsewhere. Of course, if he does clear waivers and remains with the Leafs it could be seen as a slap in the face for his confidence.

For me it is NOT who got sent down to the Marlies, but who Stayed…John Mitchell did not deserve to stay if by Ron’s Standards, those who earn it will play. Well if Kadri didn’t earn it, and I agree he didn’t , then Mitchell should be boarding the same bus. Tough-Luck to Luca Caputi who I thought deserved to stay for at least a few games. Also feel strong that if Grabovski goes into a extended drought, he will be the first to be dealt.
