Development Isn’t a Life Sentence

It is by no means the end of his career, strictly the next step.

On Monday, Nazem Kadri, 7th overall selection in the 2009 draft, was assigned to the Toronto Marlies. The player in whom a whole city had welcomed, became enamoured with and inked into their own starting lineup will not appear at ACC at all… at least not yet. It will prove to be a powerful lesson for the 19 year old, if not the whole city of Toronto; the Toronto Maple Leafs are about winning hockey games, not necessarily selling tickets.

It seems like a simple principle, I know, but for the people of Toronto this comes as a revelation.

For years fans have leaned heavily on the complaint that the Maple Leafs brass live happily icing mediocrity. That the importance of regular season success was diminished by financial prosperity. With the assignment of Kadri to the Marlies, Brian Burke, Leafs’ President and General Manager, sent the firm message that no longer can truth be found in that complaint.

Sure, Kadri would sell more sweaters than Tim Brent and draw bigger crowds than Clarke MacArthur – but fan base is not part of the equation. With the assignment of Kadri to the AHL, all were told that there were more talented top-six forwards and harder working bottom-six players. In order for the Toronto Maple Leafs to win games, Nazem is to be sent down. For Kadri to develop into the player which his potential holds – an offensively gifted top-six centre with the tenacity to run any opponent through the end boards – he must tread in the footsteps of many before him.

The AHL has been has been developing top-end talent for 75 years, and for Kadri it’s the perfect stop on his way to being an NHL regular. Tyler Bozak, Viktor Stalberg and Carl Gunnarsson are among the NHL’ers that played with the Marlies just this past season. The foundations of the Red Wings organization is built on steady development through their AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. There’s a lot to be said for prospects getting a taste of the pro life without the pressure that the NHL holds.

]Dallas Eakins, Head Coach of the Toronto Marlies, couldn’t be a better tutor for the teenage Kadri. Having been with the Maple Leafs organization for the past four seasons, Eakins spent a considerable amount of time as the team’s Director of Player Development. Having plucked Eakins from an office down the hall to name him Head Coach, Brian Burke has complete faith that the Dallas is the perfect man to develop his prospects.

The Marlies training facially is located in the same building, and directly across the hall, from the Leafs. On the ice the Marlies are often conditioned by Leafs’ Graeme Townshend, and in the gym Anthony Belza, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the buds, will have a personalized workout regimen for Nazem. This extra step will not be a hindrance, but rather a benefit.

And at the end of it, one year from now when we examine the development of the London-native, Kadri will have vastly improved – no question. He will be better prepared to join the NHL, and help continue a pattern of winning for the Maple Leafs.

Development is for the Marlies but right now, it’s all about winning for the Leafs.

Note: Brian Burke also announced today that Christian Hanson (F), Luca Caputi (F) and Jussi Rynnas (G) have been assigned to the AHL Marlies. Jay Rosehill (F) and Danny Richmond (D) have also been assigned to the Toronto AHL club pending they first clear waivers.

Until they ban fighting completely you will always need guys to fill the role of sticking up for your teammates.
Considering how soft we are in our top 6, it worries me that teams might take liberties. Orr is tough but he can’t fight all the battles himself.
While Armstrong and Brown are willing, they aren’t really in the heavyweight class.
We shouldn’t be paying guys like Phaneuf, Komisarek, or Schenn $14 million to goon it up.
IMO, Rosehill serves a real purpose in a 13th forward role.

I buy into what Burke’s saying about wanting Hanson to see more than 6 minutes a night and needing to play more, but I’m also wondering if this is a cap management issue too. Hanson qualifies for ECL bonuses if he hits any of the thresholds this year, neither Brent or Mitchell do.
    .
Plus, with their puny cap hits, if either Brent or Mitchell shows even a bit of upside this year, they could be desirable (or acceptable) trade bait for other cap-ladden teams that need that 13th spare part type depth player and are looking to dump some salary…

I believe hanson and Caputi earned spots.
I don’t believe brent and Mitchell did.

I am willing to wait and see if RW and BB know something i don’t. I am assuming they do

Hanson does not have any ELC bonuses he can earn. His contract is a straight-forward 650K two-way deal. This is his second contract as well, so he can’t even tack bonuses onto it.

Has anyone read today the announcement of McKegg as OHL Player of Week and Brad Ross as WHL Player of the Week? It’s on both league’s websites. Man, this bodes well for our selections in the past. Maybe both these guys will be considered to play at this year’s WJC for Canada. Way to go Dave Morrison!!

    @ Sk8trBoi:
I mean give me an instance of a team that has 2 big time enforces that would make us want to keep Rosey around for the season. Rosehill hasn’t been claimed yet, he can still play for the Marlies, so he could be recalled if Orr gets hurt. Colton gets paid $1,000,000 a year to smash face… if he has to do it 80 games a year, so be it. Something about him tells me he enjoys the rough stuff…

He’s been late a couple times to practice and the coach sat him out of a game because of it I think. Rumour had it before he was drafted that he had a bad attitude, so this isn’t helping his case. I’m not totally sure of the situation, but that’s what I remember reading.

@ 2 Minutes for Looking so Guru:
My thoughts towards carrying Rosehill as the 13th forward are simply that I believe he won’t really develop anymore playing on the Marlies.
But he could be used as an effective energy winger who will be that much more accustomed to the speed of the NHL game if he’s practising with the big club.
Further, when the opposing coach is making his line-up for a particular game and he knows that Rosehill could be inserted into the game, he just might opt for more toughness himself. Thus removing a skill player from his team, and in effect leveling the playing field a little.
I understand this is all a moot point really, arguing about who we would rather have in the pressbox, all I’m saying is I’d rather it be an enforcer than a face-off specialist.
And there are tons of examples of teams that ice 2 “goon” type players.

“Kirill Kabanov might be the ultimate example of how attitude issues (and the confusion that comes with dealing with unpredictable Russian players who lack much in the way of transfer regulations) can affect a player’s status with an NHL team. The New York Islanders prospect was described as some by a high-end prospect but plummeted to the Islanders in the third round because many believed he has some, well, personal issues.

Whether the heavily-tattooed Kabanov is a “good boy” as he claimed or not, he certainly didn’t make a great first impression with the Islanders today, as Chris Botta reports that he showed up late to the first day of the team’s prospects camp.”

He slept in and showed up late to one of the main roster training camp sessions after that and seems to be headed for permanent flake status…
