Morrisonn welcomes Ross to the Maple Leafs' organization

Not a bad start for the Maple Leafs‘ 2010 draft class… It was announced on Monday that forward prospects Greg McKegg, the Leafs‘ 3rd round pick 62nd overall, and Brad Ross, the Leafs‘ 2nd round pick 43rd overall, were named OHL and WHL Players of the Week respectively for the week of September 27th to October 3rd. Not to be forgotten is forward Josh Nicholls, the team’s 7th round pick 182nd overall who is off to a career best start for the Saskatoon Blades.

McKegg, who was named captain of the Erie Otters this season, recorded 7 points, including a pair of shorthanded markers, to go along with a +2 rating in 3 games played. It was only the fifth time in Otters’ history that a player managed to score two shorthanded goals in the same game.

Meanwhile, Ross’ 5 goals, 1 assist and +6 rating through 4 games played have helped lead the Winterhawks to a strong 3-1-0-1 start to the season. Ross has clearly been the best player on the ice for Portland, twice earning the game’s 1st star honors already this year.

Although he did not win a Player of the Week award himself, Saskatoon Blades forward Josh Nicholls has also gotten off to an excellent start in his WHL campaign. The Tsawwassen, British Columbia native has produced 7 points in 5 games played thus far and will look to improve greatly on last year’s 48 point totals. During my interview with Dave Morrisonn for the Maple Leafs Annual, he explained that Nicholls is a player whom most teams felt should have gone somewhere in the middle rounds of the draft, but fortunately fell to the Maple Leafs all the way down in the 7th round. The organization saw a lot of potential in Nicholls despite modest point totals because of his strong character, well-rounded game and significant improvement during the second half of last season.

Tickets Note:

I have a pair of Purples to the Leafs-Islanders game on October 18th that I am unable to attend and would like to move at cost. Drop me an email if you’d be interested.
