Post-Game Reaction Thread: Things Are Going Better Than Expected

Not much to dislike about tonight’s performance as the Leafs get off to their best start to a season since the 1999-2000 campaign with a 5-1 win over the 0-2 Senators. The Leafs next travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday after a three-day break in what figures to be their toughest test of the young season.

A few quick thoughts:

Systematically, the forecheck was relentless and the defence looked as organized as it was disorganized this time last year. A full 60 minute effort, when it was tempting to let off in the third. Phil Kessel is looking stronger, better conditioned and even more lethal than where he left off last season. The four forward lines are clicking on all cylinders and serving their functions. The penalty kill is a night and day difference so far. The powerplay production/finishing is still lacking but it is showing serious signs of promise in terms of pressure, movement and the number of chances generated. Clarke MacArthur is not only living up to his top six billing so far in terms of goal output but is making a difference on a shift to shift basis, setting up the opener on a great pass to Kulemin out front. He, along with Kessel and Tim Brent are on pace for 82 this season (TSN’s player profiles don’t lie). Giguere should’ve had a shut out if it wasn’t for a fumble on the icing touch-up. Kaberle was brilliant and even shot the puck lots. Orr fought Carkner. Versteeg fought Fisher to complete the Gordie Howe hat trick. ‘Twas a good night.

All I can say is that teams who put young guys in with something to prove are finding success over teams with older players who have long forgotten how to play at a high energy level for an entire 60 minutes. Kovalev, Alfredsson are not able to lead any longer. They just can’t handle the new young player that has tons of speed, good hands, more assertiveness and will play shift after shift.

What an impressive game Saturday night was. It is just a good start to the season but I can see that everyone on the ice knows that to stay on the roster they have to work hard every shift.

All of us can see after the fact just how correct Burke is. Tim Brent is a wonderful 3rd line center. A lot of us complained about him but wow can he ever position himself well and he just never loses concentration.

The Senators, if they do not regain a work ethic, can forget the playoffs this year. Montreal and Toronto will finish ahead of them.

“Jeez, did the Hurricanes make some enemies in the scheduling office? Joe Corvo was incredulous about the team’s start, as you can read about in the NHL.com article.

No, it is ridiculous,” Corvo told NHL.com when the topic of the Hurricanes’ schedule upon their return from Finland was brought up. “From the start here (in Helsinki) to the West Coast trip and then to starting at home against Washington and Pittsburgh, it’s just like, how much can you guys handle in one month?

“It’s going to be a test. A mental test more than anything else.”

Sure, they get 16 of their final 24 games of the season at home, and that could be fruitful timing for a team that figures to be in the pack chasing a playoff spot all season, but the Hurricanes can’t look that far down the tunnel for the light right now.

Getting those four points in Finland is huge, though. If Carolina could get hot in October, they’ll put themselves in a great position to make the playoffs – and maybe make a run at the division title – by earning those tough points while they’re fresh and then they can take advantage of the softer parts of their schedule.

Either way, it’s a tough start to the season, but if the team can not only survive but thrive under that pressure, they could end up with a gem of a 2010-11 season.”

    Tragic comedy:

“The period included a scary moment. With 4:04 to play, Blues forwards Cam Janssen and Brad Winchester both honed in on Philadelphia defenseman Oskars Bartulis.

As Bartulis came along the boards in the Flyers’ end, Janssen lined him up from across the ice, while Winchester lined him up from the other direction. The Blues players arrived simultaneously, but they basically missed Bartulis and smashed into each other.

Winchester caught Janssen flush in the head with his left shoulder. The Flyers immediately enganged Winchester in a scrum, but Janssen laid on the ice for several moments, stunned.

Janssen eventually was helped to the dressing room. Winchester and Janssen both got charging minors. The Flyers were penalized for instigating a fight.”

When have you ever heard of two players from the same team getting charging penalties on the same play (when they ran in to each other)… LOL.
