Game Day Thread: Perfect Leafs visit Pens

The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to visit the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at the Consol Energy Arena. The Penguins have yet to win at home this season and get another opportunity to erase that stat tonight against a Leafs team that is hoping to remain undefeated. Jonas Gustavsson will get his first start between the pipes according to Sportsnet.

Ron Wilson’s decision to call Gustavsson’s number for the first time this season is interesting. Given how hot Jean Sebastien Giguere is at the moment and the three day lay off since Saturday’s game against Ottawa, it’s a bit surprising Giguere won’t get the chance to continue what he’s started. But this was always a 1A/1B situation going in, and for Gustavsson’s sake it’s probably important to get him his first taste of the regular season sooner rather than later.

A few fun stats regarding tonight’s teams:

Phil Kessel: 2GP 2G 1A 3P is on pace for 82 goals and 123 points. Perhaps something even more to smile about is knowing the Thrashers walked away from Clake MacArthur – who is scoring at the same pace as Kessel (hey, while it lasts).

Not a single Leafs player sits in the minus column regarding plus/minus.

It looks like Luke Schenn is back to his top four defence form as he averages over 22 minutes of ice-time per game and is currently a plus 2 with no registered points.

JS Giguere sits among some of the top goaltenders in the league with 2 wins and a 0.935 save percentage. His goals against average of 1.51 is certainly an improvement from the Leafs goaltending performance one season ago.

Sidney Crosby has yet to register a goal this season. Tim Brent of the Toronto Maple Leafs is already looking for his third.

Paul Martin is showing promising signs of his ability to lead the powerplay on the back end. With the loss of Sergei Gonchar over the summer, Paul Martin was signed as a free agent from the New Jersey Devils and now currently leads the Penguins in points with 4, including 1 goal in his three appearances.

Unfortunately for Pens fans, the team has been struggling in their defensive zone. Zbynek Michalek, who was brought in to aid the club with blocked shots, is currently a team worst minus 3.

Marc Andre-Fleury has struggled through his first few games posting just a 0.889 save percentage. That said, back-up goaltender Brent Johnson has a 0.968 save percentage and has stopped all 31 shots he’s faced in just under 60 minutes of action this season.

25 year-old rookie Mark Letestu is having a successful start to his professional career. He has 2 goals on the year while averaging just under 15 minutes of ice-time per game.

Exactly. It was a checking and cycling game. Kessel isn’t Crosby where he can also grind it out, but who is? He’s a sniping winger. I’m going to say right now that he scores 2 goals on Friday against a less organized, more free-flowing Rangers team.

Yea, I just don’t see it happening though. Richards is vastly over-rated. His defensive play is atrocious. I think that might be one of those trades that does more harm then good. You can hear the players: “Oh, so you brought in an 8 million dollar guy who can’t play defense and feels no need to mesh with our team cuz he knows he’s going to free agency? Great, thanks Burkie!” Especially if Burke moved roster players to do it. Maybe I just have an unnatural and undeserved dislike for Richards, but I don’t think it would be very helpful…

    @ Potsy:

Was thinking the same, Kessel just needs to work on his man on man coverage and back check and play to his strength’s, speed, shot, cycling low and finding the open ice.

The team also isn’t a finished product yet, while the Bruins (I assume this is who you’re talking about) are in their Cup window. All we need to do is see improvement. But long term, I think that Burke envisions Kadri being the guy that centers the line that works well against those kind of teams. Kulemin, Kadri, Perry would light up one of those style of teams, I think.

For the last time..Orr was not “out cold” or “KO’ed”.
    he was;
    knocked down
    stunned
    maybe tko’d
    ….but not KO’ed
Back on his feet rather quickly for anything more than a flash flusher.
Problem is,he may have to face Boogieman with a few marbles scrambley on Friday.

Yea, he was fine. It’s quite possible to just fall after being punched in the face, and still be okay. They are standing on tiny little blades and slippery ice.

Disagree…his eyes rolled back…he was out cold. For 1 or 2 seconds…. but he was out.

Doesn’t matter I guess, hope he is okay.

Oh ya I forgot about the boogeyman, maybe Wilson took Orr out for precautionary reason and to rest? Dunno..I am also one who has said he wasn’t KO’ed, he actually let up when the kids helmet blocked his view and took one on the bugle.

We get it. You think you’re smarter than everyone else because a few posters speculated a trade after seeing cap space open up. The trolling has to stop.

Hate to be that kid next time Leafs play the Pens….Orr was pummeling him and let up when the kids helmet was in the way, and the kid got lucky…Orr always pays back.

He was also about a -20 during that time and has pretty outstanding teammates. 91 points is also a pretty massive anomoly for Richards – don’t expect that again. A shit team? It’s pretty much the exact same team that went to the Conference Finals not so long ago. They’ve had two years to replace Zubov, but just haven’t managed to do so. One player does not a team make though. Their top six is lethal with Eriksson, Morrow, Ribeiro, Benn, and Neal to compliment Richards.
    -
I think I admitted already that my opinion might be off, as I admit, I just really don’t like him, but regardless, there’s certainly enough evidence to suggest that he isn’t all he’s cracked up to be. Consider that the last time he was traded it was for a backup goalie, a shootout specialist and a 4th round pick. Consider that just a year ago, no one was suggesting Richards in any forums for the Leafs (even though we were even more thin at center then). His sudden popularity is purely a product of his one good year last year.
