Post Game Recap: For Kris’ Sake

Jonathan Tavares powerplay goal with a 1:34 left in overtime lifted the competitive New York Islanders over the Toronto Maple Leafs 2 – 1. 11 months ago.  Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson only had to make half as many saves as the November 23rd 2009 thievery, but the result was still the same as an outworked, out-chanced and outplayed New York Islanders club still managed to steal a win

Now, to strut my prognostication skills, I made a gentleman’s agreement with a client at the bank today.  He predicted that the Leafs would win in regulation by 1 goal.  Feeling that the Leafs were due for a stinker, I bet that the Islanders would win by at least 2 goals.  Well, sorry, Grant, but apparently we neither of us are gentlemen.

The first period saw a Leafs team play with the entire swagger that comes with being the best in the league.  In the first 14 minutes, the Leafs absolutely dominated the puck. The leafs set a physical tone with Tyler Bozak running into Josh Bailey and injuring the former Windsor Spitfire. Also, a deft leafs defense and speedy counter attack stifled the Isles offence: for a span of ten minutes they were held shotless.

Despite taking control of the game, the Leafs couldn’t solve the wizened Roloson.  Kessel and Versteeg were robbed on separate chances early in the first.  Versteeg in particular was spectacular tonight.  Though held pointless, Versteeg performed admirably in a losing cause.  On the other side of the spectrum, Tomas Kaberle was having an off night.  His puck handling skills tonight appeared to be anything but sublime.

Roloson continued to be the story of the first as he stopped two quick chances (a point blast from Schenn and a quick snap shot from Sjostrom) to keep the overmatched Isles in it.

The Leafs, apparently confusing the TV time out with 6:01 left in the first with the end of the period, disappeared.  It was at this time that I began noticing that the Isles forecheck was really hindering Toronto’s ability to pass the puck in their own zone.

12 seconds into the 2nd period, Francois Beauchemin took the game’s first penalty.  The Leafs 93.3% PK took the ice and foot soldiers Mike Brown and Mike Zigomanis performed commendably to keep the score tied.  An unfortunate miscue by Colby Armstrong led to a Frans Nielsen inception, who dished to Tavares who floated a puck over to Matt Moulson.  Moulson – who showed that he’s played a game or two of NHL 11 – pulled off a pretty backhand deke that beat Giggy glove side to make it 1 – 0.

After that, the game turned into an episode of “Everybody hates Kris” as No. 32 was robbed not once, not twice, but thrice.  The first two were when Versteeg found himself in alone and was robbed by the pad of Rolly and then the crossbar.

After two great scoring chances by Mikhail Grabovski, Kris Versteeg was robbed for a final time, this time by referee Don Van Massenhoven.  After a Dion Phaneuf bomb from the point deflected off Roloson, it glanced off Versteeg’s raised stick.  Though my ears heard no whistle, apparently play was blown dead milliseconds before Versteeg fired the puck home.

Shortly thereafter the Leafs went on the powerplay, as the refs – in an attempt at appeasement more transparent than the militarization of the Rheinland in 1936 – called John Tavares on a dubious interference penalty.  The powerplay, as has been seen often this season, was another impotent display of peripheral passing plays that read “Kessel, to Kaberle…to Phaneuf back to Kessel back to Kaberle who holds it before passing it back to Phaneuf.”  From the PP to the end of the period, the Leafs looked out of sync

The second period ended with a frustrated Versteeg taking a slashing call after being pummeled into the boards by Radek Martinek.  The third began in much the same way as the second, with Zigomanis and Brown excelling on the PK.

Looking to pick up the team by the bootstraps, Luke Schenn committed an act of pure elder abuse, running Doug Weight over in the corner.  It seemed to spark the club, as not long after Phaneuf led a rush down the ice that saw Colby Armstrong appear to dig the puck out from under Roloson and into the net.  However, the play was put under review and the goal waved off.  The puck, admittedly, didn’t look like it went in, but for the 18000 fans at the game and countless others watching at home, the call felt like just another injustice against the hard luck buds.

The bad luck finally abated with 2:05 to play as James Wisniewski’s penalty led to Phil Kessel’s tying goal.  Dion Phaneuf fired a shot that deflected off Zenon Konopka’s shinpad right to an open Kessel.

Overtime was necessary, due to beautiful defensive plays by Clarke MacArthur at one end and Radek Martinek at the other in the dying seconds of the third.

In OT, the Leafs again controlled the pace of the game…to no avail.  To add insult to injury, Kris Versteeg found himself in alone on a breakaway and just as he was about to unleash a wrister, the puck bounced on him and he missed the net by a good 4 feet.  Later, on a 2 on 1 rush, Brett Lebda (making his first appearance for the Leafs) took a penalty for goaltender interference.  Who’s a goose? You’re a goose, Brett.

The ensuing powerplay led to Tavares’ winner, a laser of a shot that beat Giguere over the shoulder.  The Isles improve to 3 – 1 – 2 on the season, while Leafs finally lost a game, falling to 4 – 0 – 1 on the season.  The next Leafs game will be Thursday against the bed-ridden New York Rangers.

Let’s put a positive spin on this game. The Leafs lost their first game but in doing so did not give up and kept plugging away. These are the bright spots of the game:

    - Komisarek and Lebda looked to work well together.
    - Versteeg took his game to another level
    - PK continues to look sharp
    - Goaltending was solid
    - Phaneuf had his best game of the season
    - Team speed is among the best in NHL

On the Versteeg non-goal I am having difficulty understanding the Refs logic. What I saw was an airborn rebound glance off Versteeg’s stick which was below his shoulders and drop to the ice. He then shot the puck into the net. Why was the goal called back? The puck was directed into the net by a high stick, NOT. The puck glanced off a stick that was raised over the players shoulders, NOT. There was goaltender interference, NOT. The only conclusion is 4 refs managed to screw up the call.

Sooner or later we had to lose. This is the BEST possible loss we could have taken. This doesn’t slow us down at all. If anything, this lights a fire and the boys go out there on thursday and make sure they come away with the full 2 points.

Just wanted to mention that the OT goal deflected off Beauchemin. It was going stick side, but hit him and went high glove. Not that I am going after Beauchemin. I just think that Jiggy had good position. You can even see him give the death-ray-eyes to Beauchemin after the goal.

Wrong. He played great all night until a bad shift near the end of the game. A couple giveaways are fine for me if he spends ALL night taking the puck away from the other fucking team. Watch the game again. Beach was a top 3 defensman last night along with Schenn and Kaberle.
Lebda was neither good or bad, looked like he wanted to play up ice too much, but I’ll assume it’s because he was all geared up to make something happen in his debut.
I thought Komi played his best game of the year. All the D will cough the puck bad once in while, but he did a good job last night overall.
Phaneuf showed me what I wanted: when we are down and need a boost he picked it up and played in one direction and it payed off. Last night was the first time this idea came to me: power forward?

    @ dlb:

i did watch the game, he made stupid plays in his own zone all night long, couldnt get the puck out, made horrible giveaways, his first pass was so shit and on top of that he deflected the the gamewinner in.

taking it and giving it right back is forgiveable in your eyes? the guy cant make basic easy plays when they are right infront of him

I don’t blame Beauchemin for not blocking that shot last night. Tavares was in a pretty bad position, and I definitely didn’t expect the one timer. But hell, that’s the mark of a good player and we got burned by the unpredictability of a young star (even though it was a lucky deflection). You could see Beauchemin wasn’t squared up to block the shot but rather was patrolling the area in an attempt to get his stick into the passing lanes. He didn’t expect the one timer either in my opinion. Whatever, shit happens when you party naked. We move on.

    Was at game last night.
    This is a fast team.
Wilson is getting through to them…there is a plan and they are in buying in.
Armie is TO s kind of player….. I will take him every day of the week…will be so useful when it counts down the stretch. He is overpaid…..but if he had hands…he would make 5 mil a year….
Dion took the 3rd period by storm….”jump on fellas….your captain will lead the way”
I hope Schenn and Dion like eachother cause they are going to be teammates for a longtime…Schenn is the real deal. Amazing what confidence does.
Kessel is one of the funnest players to watch live…..he has his shortcomings but gawd…he has flash…..oh and he is 22…..thats the best part.
Giggy needs to be reatained till he retires…..so calm and a winner…..he needs to mentor goalies into the future…..just for less money.
Grabo……flat out fast and hard on the puck…..if the good lord blessed him with 4 more inches in height…..what a dominant player he would be.
Kuli…..looked confused….but he has a tonne of potential.
The 10/11 leafs are gonna be rewarded for their committment to understanding eachothers roles……a team has been formed…..good times……bring on the rags…..and Komi better be given permisiion to take an instigator and pound on that little fuck named avery. First shift…..take the entra 2 or 10 or whatever…..kill it off but make the little fuck bleed.

    @ BurkiewillFINISHthis:

Kessel has actually wowed me so far this year. Not only his offensive prowess, but I’ve seen a couple REALLY nice back checks this year that may have saved a goal or two. If you look at a guy like Sjostrom, and what he brings defensively with his speed, I can see Kessel being just as effective. Who’s to say that Kessel doesn’t become more 2 dimensional? I feel like he is starting to learn the defensive side of the game and it won’t be long before he is considered a legitimate superstar.

Since we are at home, we get to line match. Orr-Zigo-Brown line with Komi and Dion to start the game. Zigo gets the puck deep while the other 4 chase down that weasel!

Not too upset with the loss last night. I never like it when the Leafs lose, however atleast they tied it up and got a point out of the game.
The fact that they outplayed the Islanders and would have won if not for a bad call, makes the loss easier to take.
I expect them to come out with a vengeance and destroy the Rangers on Thursday night, especially since the Rangers are missing Gaborik, Drury and Prospal.

I agree with you. I thought Beauchemin was solid last night. I saw him do lots of good stuff. He did have a brain cramp towards the end of the game. As for the winning goal, four on three in overtime is likely going in one way or another. Stats sheet shows he played nearly 25 minutes, two hits, no giveaways, three takeaways and three blocked shots — most on the team last night.

Schenn is playing like a man possessed! The kid is a stalwart back there. Where did all this young talent come from? Seems like just yesterday we were watching Stajan pick his lazy ass off the ice. We’re only going to get better too… guys like Kadri, Caputi, Hanson are on the verge of breaking on to the roster, and in 1-3 years were going to be seeing guys like Ross, McKegg, Olden. It’s a great time to be a leaf fan. I can’t remember the last time I felt this way about this team.
