Is Schenn Komisarek’s Kryptonite?
Share

Upon drafting defensive stalwart Luke Schenn fifth-overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs had hoped they obtained a young defender capable of anchoring the blueline for years to come.

Advertised to deliver menacing hits and possess exceptional defensive awareness, it didn’t take long for Schenn to crack the Leafs’ roster. As an 18-year-old defenseman he donned the Blue and White for 70 games, rarely looking out of place—a rarity for young defensemen in the NHL. He had fans salivating for more, but he regressed in his second campaign, enduring the dreaded sophomore slump.

With plenty of questions surrounding the Leafs’ defense heading into the 2010-11 season, Schenn seemed like an afterthought as most analysts were concerned if Mike Komisarek and Francois Beachemin would rebound, or if Dion Phaneuf could handle the responsibility bestowed with the captaincy.

Perhaps the reduced pressure helped or, the likelier scenario, Schenn is developing as a 20-year-old defenseman should be, but the rearguard has been an integral part of the Leafs’ 4-0-1 start, which is good for first overall in the league.

To put it in perspective, here are some statistics you may find interesting:

  • Schenn leads all Maple Leafs defensemen in shorthanded ice-time with an average of 3:21 per game.
  • Ranked second for even-strength ice-time with an average of 18:14 per game; 16 seconds less than leader Tomas Kaberle.
  • Ranked second on the team with 18 hits, one less than leader Phaneuf and tied for 7th in the NHL.

Consequently, Komisarek has had little opportunity to redeem his mediocre efforts last season. His ice-time has dropped to a mere 13:28 per game, which is about six and a half minutes less than he played last season. While Komisarek hasn’t been awful by any stretch, he hasn’t been the defensive force he once was in Montreal.  However, the 28-year-old rearguard has made the most of his limited playing time. He’s recorded 11 hits (eight less than Phaneuf who nearly doubles his ice-time) and eight block shots, ranking him second on the team. Ron Wilson’s attempt to ease Komisarek into the game after two injury-riddled seasons may prove successful, but it’s hard to imagine the rearguard stealing a spot in the top four with the emergence of Schenn and the chemistry established between Beauchemin and Phaneuf. Considering his lucrative $4.5 million cap-hit, Komisarek is no bottom-pairing defenseman. Thus, both the Leafs and Komisarek are in a dilemma.

Thankfully, Komisarek is not complaining about the reduced ice-time and instead is attempting to fight his way back. However, unless an injury sidelines one of the Leafs’ top four defensemen, Komisarek has a difficult uphill climb. For now, Schenn is the king of the defensive defenseman hill and kicking dirt in Komisarek’s face every step he takes. There’s just not enough ice-time to go around, and unfortunately for the Leafs, that means they’re stuck committing around $28 million (including Jeff Finger) to the blueline for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately for the Leafs, the contracts of Beauchemin ($3.8 million) and Komisarek are immovable, and unless the Leafs part ways with Kaberle this summer, leaving a hole on the powerplay, the defense corps will remain the same until at least the summer of 2012, when Beauchemin’s contract expires. Until then, Komisarek’s role with the Leafs could remain limited. And unless John Ferguson Jr. takes the helm as Leafs GM, Schenn is an untouchable.

The question, however, is whether both Komisarek and Schenn can coexist on the Leafs’ blueline.

Logjam is an understatement.

You stay classy, MLHS.

i dont want any changes in the top 6
hell i dont want any changes in the bottom 6 either
everyone knows their role and they are playing it well
if we make a move whos to say our guys will be comfortable switching roles
or that the new guy will play the role as good as the guy we traded him for
    i love our goaltending
    i love our forwards
I even love our d (beauchemin’s a loser but hes fine)
keep it the same until they give us a reason not to

Well if its Brad Richards the Stars are in tough anyways. No money to re-sign players and he is about to be a UFA at the end of the season, plus he is a big ticket item which many teams cannot afford.

    Advantage…..Burke.

Things I’d like to see happen in the next 12-18 months to make this team a valid contender:
    .
First thing is a power forward for the 1st line LW spot (like a Backes). Drop Versteeg to 2nd line RW in place of Mac (ya ya on pace for a billion goals this year, he’ll still end up with 20ish by the end of the year). Versteeg can play all 3 forward positions but RW is his natural position (maybe that’s some of the trouble he’s had on the top line?). Not sure where Mac goes, I obviously wouldn’t replace Army or Orr, and not sure if he can play LW in place of Sjoey.
    .
Second thing is a legit 1st line Center (Richards is an obvious choice here). Move Bozak to 2nd C and let him and Grabs battle it out for that spot, trade the other.
    .
Third thing (maybe) is to develop Kadri as a LW for the 2nd line, replace Sjoe with Kuli on the third.
    .
Fourth is Hanson replacing Brent on the 3rd line, let Brent and Ziggy battle it out for 4th spot.

I think if Dallas was looking to move Richards they would be more likely to be looking at guys like Kuli, Captui, D’Amigo than Kaberle for a couple reasons.

    1. They would save some dough.
    2. There’s a chance one of them turns into a guy who puts up some decent numbers and it is easier to sell the fans on the hope of prospects when you move a big name guy.
    3. I don’t know if Kaberle would waive his clause to go to Dallas. They are in dire straits down there now with the state of ownership.

I just wanna clarify too btw, I am not making up trade rumors or anything. I’ve just heard a lot of buzz lately (mostly on the fan actually) about Richards for Kabs.

It doesn’t make much sense to me really. I would love Richards on the team but I don’t see Dallas doing that deal for kabs.

    @ Ensign:

Yeah especially with the TKabs is skating right now. Guy looks like he did 10 years ago. If we sign him to a 3 yr deal does he go back to last years model or stay like he is now? Cause I sure like what I am seeing with him and Schenn.

    I would offer something like
    Grabovski+Gunnersson+Prospect FOR Richards
Joe knows how good Gunner is, and Grabovski is looking good this year and that saves them a lot of money while somewhat of a rebuild

Thornton also set the standard for a contract basically. 7 mil is a good price for the skills they bring

I have a feeling; That as the team plays; Kabs plays. With Dion as Cpt. There is a whole new
attitude. A feel good if you want to call it that. This is a new team; With a whole new out look on life (hockey) and its catchy; ask Thomas.

I agree…I think he’s simply a product of his environment…some people are just like that… and right now his on fire because the team is all pumped up and ready to go.. not a bunch of self entitled shits like Stajan et al!

I fail to see how Beauchemin is immovable. His contract is now similar to Kaberle’s with respect that both players have deals that are somewhat behind the times when it comes to the contracts that have been signed since July 1 or even before that.
    .
    Paul Martin – $5 M
    Zbynek Michalek – $4 M
    Brooks Orpik – $3.75 M
    Anton Volchenkov – $4.25 M
    Keith Ballard – $4.2 M
    Dan Hamhuis – $4.5 M
    .
Beauchemin is at least as good as all these players and more rounded than most of them. In addition to this, he’s only locked in for another year after this one and has no NTC/NMC. There isn’t a team in the NHL that wouldn’t want Beauchemin at the price he is right now, he is signed to a very reasonable contract for a guy that is a veteran presence/leader and is an absolute horse on the blue line.

The only thing I’d give Dallas for Richards is a late round pick for his signing rights before he hits UFA on July 1st. Why would we send any other assetts to Dallas for what might turn out to be a rental player?

I don’t like to get into the trage proposal discussions but I think this is over payment.

Have you started thinking about picks for the card this weekend?
    No pressure or anything

    @ Doorman:
Agreed, but if things fall apart and Burke was looking to sell and teams were looking for dmen, Beauchemin would be near the top of most teams list. Not saying he would be available, just saying there would be inquiries.
