Leafs ‘Open For Business’

In an interview conducted by the FAN 590, Brian Burke revealed the Toronto Maple Leafs are “open for business” regarding trade negotiations.

Although Burke didn’t reveal specifics, one would assume the Leafs are in the market for a big center. To be fair, Tyler Bozak and Mikhail Grabovski provide decent production down the middle, but neither are sure choices for number one center in the long-term at this stage.

So get your trading caps on because the Internet is going to be flooded with trade proposals, most of which are completely ridiculous. With rumors afloat that the Leafs are interested in Brad Richards, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, Burke declined to comment when asked if he was inquiring about the 30-year-old’s services. Of course, that could mean absolutely nothing and it’s likely Richards remains nothing but a pipedream, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

With the demotion of Jeff Finger, the Leafs have approximately $4.7 million in cap space. Even with Finger’s contract buried in the minors, the Leafs possess seven NHL-ready defensemen. Although it’s certainly an advantage for the club, one would think Burke is willing to unload a top four defenseman to acquire some firepower upfront. Dion Phaneuf, Tomas Kaberle (Burke once again said he isn’t going anywhere) and Luke Schenn are not getting traded, so scratch them off the list right away. And it’s hard to imagine any team willing to absorb Mike Komisarek‘s $4.5 million cap-hit. That leaves Francois Beauchemin and his lucrative, but manageable $3.8 million cap-hit. The 30-year-old rearguard is off to a decent start with the Leafs and has established some chemistry with captain Phaneuf. If he continues to provide the Leafs with stability on the backend, perhaps his contract won’t be impossible to unload after all. However, the Leafs would,  in all likelihood, have to take a lucrative contract in return—and Richards’ $7.8 million cap-hit isn’t exactly a bargain.

However, as Burke had said, nothing is imminent (especially with the Leafs off to a torrid start), so it’s likely he doesn’t pull the trigger on a trade until the trade deadline. But until then, one would assume the Leafs’ lone bargaining chip is to unload one of its excess defensemen, which in turn would open up a top four spot for Komisarek.

In any case, it’s nice to see the Leafs in an advantageous position for once because of roster depth.

Do you think the Leafs should target Richards? If not, who do you think Burke will target in the coming months?

You stay classy, MLHS.

I didnt say straight up lol – I said it would work cap wise straight up (to someone who suggested the Leafs did not have the cap space to do this)

Jesus christ, are we REALLY compairing Stalberg and Versteeg? Fucking joke!

easy there Jordan – the rumor has it that Chicago had him flagged as a 20-25 goal guy – he was on the 3rd line because he didnt have enough finish for top line minutes (1 of the reasons they went out and got Hossa as they felt they needed a real finisher). Versteeg is an all around player. He has 2 way play, great vision and is super creative and good speed.

Stalberg has world class speed and seems to have nice finish. He lacks the overall game (at least so far) that Versteeg has and is not nearly as creative with the puck.

Sorry to say, Stalberg would look 100% better on Toronto’s top line right now vs Versteeg.

My opinion – move Versteeg to center. He’s a play maker, not a finisher.

Dont get all crazy though, Leafs are undefeated – hard to complain too much…

and yeah, I hope I am dead wrong and he pots 30-40 this year…

Versteeg over Stalberg any day of the week. Steeger may be in a mini slump but he plays a smart game, is very strong along the boards and his puck pursuit is unrivaled. The offense will come. Yes he should have scored the other night but they do not always go in and sometimes when they do go in they get called back. I still see him as being more suited to second line duty where he will be away from top checking lines.

As for the Richards talk I think this could happen down the road but he is more likely to go to a team like LA who will open their wallet big time after losing out on Kovalchuk. We need a sizeable top line forward. I hope Mueller’s development is on the fast track because he could be that guy. It would bode well for us if he could slot into that role rather than us going out and signing or trading for a costly veteran power forward who is on the downside of his career.

Also, I don’t want to deal with the Sens for anybody at this point. I could see the fall-out from a blockbuster deal between Ottawa and another team opening up some options.

    @ Andrew R:
    Are you serious?
If you look at Stalberg’s stats in Chicago you will see that Chicago have very little confidence in Stalberg so far. He’s getting 9:27 TOI/G and has played O:OO SH TOI/G and 0:04 PP TOI/G.
    Chicago was playing Versteeg 15:43 TOI/G including 0:58 SH TOI/G and 1:55 PP TOI/G.
I think Chicago’s coaching staff will disagree with you as well. But hey. What do you care? It’s your opinion and no one is gonna take that from you or quite obviously change it EVER. ;)

He’ll cost a load , like Kadri and the Monster, if they won’t take Grabbo, Kadri OR the Monster, and prospects or some mid picks instead.
He’s 25 and scores a ton. Big, fast and a great PK’er as well. His team is screwed on the cap in 2011, and will pull an “Uncle Lou” if they run into injuries this year. An RFA next year, I’m talking about Carter in Philly. Let him play with both Russians on the wall, or between Kulemin and Mueller who I read is close.
I think the Leafs can resign Jiggy for maybe 6 mil over 2 years. I’ll bet the farm more than 1 of Rynnas, Scrivens, or Reimer will be ready by then or sooner. Sign a guy like Emery to minimum for the rest of this year. You gotta give something to get something, goaltending is deep, so pony up Burkie, roll them dice and pay whatever price, as long as it isn’t core players on the big team.

Sounds like the battle of the backups here in Toronto tonight: Biron vs Gustavsson.

Richards would be nice but the guy’s 30. Only daydreaming here, so don’t bite my head off…. I was just recalling that Burke interview where he said cap space was an asset.

Grabovski, Versteeg and Beauchamin for Malkin.

not like we are gonna win cup this year, right? haha

if there’s a trade in the works at this point, it should be to achieve one of two possible goals…
    1) first line winger or center
this would most likely include giving up one of the existing top six, if not two and prospect in order to yeild a return that would make it make sense – although I still believe that Boston still must clear CAP in some form, as does NJ… and there maybe posibilities there.

    2) essentially clear CAP space for July 1st 2011
by this I mean either one of Beauchemin or Komisarek would need to head out of town, and I’m basing this on the following assumptions
    i) Kaberle will be resigned at a CAP hit of approximately 5M
ii) Giguerre will resign for a CAP hit of 3.5M for two years

With Phaneuf (6.5M), Kaberle (5M), Schenn (3.5M), Beauchemin (3.8), Gunnerson (1M), Lebda (1.5M) + Aulie/Holzer+other – essential Komisarek’s CAP goes to Kaberle – and overall reduces the CAP hit on the Defense by about 4M.
With Finger’s contract in the minors another 3.5M is cleared, assume 3M cleared relative to Giguerre – meaning essentially 10M becomes available – of course a number of the RFAs have to be resigned.

Given that there appears to be some teams becoming increasingly desparate to make changes, the Leafs focus should perhaps be not so much trying to address a short or longer term need, but positioning themselves tor July1 – if you believe that BB will go after any major FA at that time.

Example- Ottawa appears to be getting desparate. Now before the flamers come out… I’m not suggesting trading Komisarek for Spezza… I’m fully aware that this wouldn’t float… however what about Komisarek for a player with a smaller CAP hit OR a player with a larger CAP hit for just this season? Komisarek for Kovalev & Zack Smith is in my mind a possibility. Komisarek would address to some degree the loss of Volchenkov. From Ottawa’s perspective, getting rid of Kovalev would appear not to be to much of a problem. Zack Smith I throw in as the cost of doing business – Leafs help Sens out of a bind, but this could just as easily be a pick or another prospect. From Leaf’s perspective they clear a CAP hit of 4.5 million for the upcoming years, a prospect or pick and Kovalev for a season. Now if Kovalev thinks there’s another contract coming at the end of the current season FROM ANYONE he’ll have to start pretending he’s a hockey player, he could actually be useful on the PP in particular.

Anaheim might be another target market for Komisarek, could be the Islanders, Carolina, Oilers or Anahiem.

The key in the short term will be wether BB believes he can leverage his team’s current good run and another team’s current poor performance.

Richards would be a horrendously bad idea. He’s playing for money right now. I can’t understand how people can be so stupid to get worked up about a player that clearly flatlines after collecting a paycheck and has absolutely zero defensive skill. Terrible idea. And those that want to give up Kadri + for him, give your heads a collective shake. My god, the last time he was traded it was for a shootout specialist, a backup goalie, and a 4th round pick. But of course, moronic Leaf fans want Burke to give up top prospects and 60 point centers making half the money to acquire a rental. It’s sheer idiocy unless he comes at a bargain price.

And to the writer of this article and everyone else: The Leafs do not have 4.7 million dollars in cap space. They are over the cap with their current roster, and any salary we add will be using the bonus cushion. This means adding players will almost certainly result in a cap penalty next year, and also severely limit the team’s ability to call up players to help with injuries and so forth.

Burke would never acquire a guy like Kovalev who would ruin the dressing room with his laziness and lack of caring. A similar idea though, would be Komisarek for Arnott.
