Leafs ‘Open For Business’

In an interview conducted by the FAN 590, Brian Burke revealed the Toronto Maple Leafs are “open for business” regarding trade negotiations.

Although Burke didn’t reveal specifics, one would assume the Leafs are in the market for a big center. To be fair, Tyler Bozak and Mikhail Grabovski provide decent production down the middle, but neither are sure choices for number one center in the long-term at this stage.

So get your trading caps on because the Internet is going to be flooded with trade proposals, most of which are completely ridiculous. With rumors afloat that the Leafs are interested in Brad Richards, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, Burke declined to comment when asked if he was inquiring about the 30-year-old’s services. Of course, that could mean absolutely nothing and it’s likely Richards remains nothing but a pipedream, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

With the demotion of Jeff Finger, the Leafs have approximately $4.7 million in cap space. Even with Finger’s contract buried in the minors, the Leafs possess seven NHL-ready defensemen. Although it’s certainly an advantage for the club, one would think Burke is willing to unload a top four defenseman to acquire some firepower upfront. Dion Phaneuf, Tomas Kaberle (Burke once again said he isn’t going anywhere) and Luke Schenn are not getting traded, so scratch them off the list right away. And it’s hard to imagine any team willing to absorb Mike Komisarek‘s $4.5 million cap-hit. That leaves Francois Beauchemin and his lucrative, but manageable $3.8 million cap-hit. The 30-year-old rearguard is off to a decent start with the Leafs and has established some chemistry with captain Phaneuf. If he continues to provide the Leafs with stability on the backend, perhaps his contract won’t be impossible to unload after all. However, the Leafs would,  in all likelihood, have to take a lucrative contract in return—and Richards’ $7.8 million cap-hit isn’t exactly a bargain.

However, as Burke had said, nothing is imminent (especially with the Leafs off to a torrid start), so it’s likely he doesn’t pull the trigger on a trade until the trade deadline. But until then, one would assume the Leafs’ lone bargaining chip is to unload one of its excess defensemen, which in turn would open up a top four spot for Komisarek.

In any case, it’s nice to see the Leafs in an advantageous position for once because of roster depth.

Do you think the Leafs should target Richards? If not, who do you think Burke will target in the coming months?

You stay classy, MLHS.

Stalberg has “twice as many goals” as Versteeg…ya, 2 vs Versteegs 1. Waaaaayyyyy too early to compare those two on goal stats.

wasn’t Niewendyk the one who recruited Bozak? hmmm…I could see Dallas wanting him. I think most of the comments are overvaluing Richards in their trade scenarios…he makes like 7.6 million…and I would guess if he was on waivers today he wouldn’t even be claimed. No team has that money within their internal budget or cap space.

  • Bon Scott was a Leaf fan

Just watching the Rypien cafuffle from last night. Seems to me everyone is making a bigger deal out of it than it deserves. Sure Rypien shoved the fan but it’s not as though he actually went up into the stands and started hitting him like Milbury did.

    Ex 2009 Leafs
    Poni 1 assist
    Blake 0 points
    Stajan hurt
    Mayers hurt
    Stempniak 1 assist
Whitey 1 assist (still like him)
Hagman 2 goals (he was ok)
    Toskala unsigned unrestricted free agent
    -
I wish Whitey well, but the others…not so much

Just for laughs…here is the statement of claim re the Grabovski alleged assault
“The suit alleged Dylan Richardson has suffered a head injury, multiple facial fractures requiring reconstructive surgery, a back injury, trauma to his mouth, teeth and eyes, memory loss, a change in personality and ongoing headaches, among other things.

The Richardsons are seeking damages for lost income and health-care costs, as well as punitive damages.

Did Nieuwendyk recruit Bozak? I’m not sure. I know he recruited Christian Hanson. Bozak grew up a Leaf fan, so I think that did most of the talking.
    .
On Dallas wanting Rynnas or Reimer. Well they thought they had Rynnas(agreement with his old club team) and he shafted them(although he was free to go wherever he wanted, but the most obvious place was Dallas). So would they feel burned by them and not want him, or does that make them want him more. I’m not sure.
    .
Stalberg over Versteeg? Come on, this is not even close. Versteeg is the way better player and he’s younger. Just cause he only has 2 point’s in 5 games(should have 3) is not important at all. He’s been one of our best penalty killer’s and look where were sitting in that regard compared to last year. Also, Stalberg was a healthy scratch in the last Blackhawk game.

I think Versteeg is going to break out huge in the next few games. He is self admitily a bit behind in conditioning due to the long spring winning the cup…he has been key in penalty kills, he is tops in the league in take aways…he had a Gordie Howe hat trick too ! I think part of the blame falls on Bozak too, looking for Kessel all the time…can’t blame him…and not using Versteeg as an option

The book should be thrown at Rypien. I’m sorry this isn’t the 70′s when you could beat the fan’s with a shoe. The fan was clapping, it was not like he was in the face of Rypien at all. While no one got hurt, it doesn’t matter in my mind. Rypien should be sitting the minimum of 10 game’s just for that. But he also apparently shoved the official, and threw a punch while being restrained. So as we all know it’s 3 game’s for shoving an official(see Grabovski), and let’s compare the shoving the fan to leaving the penalty box to get involved in a fight. Brantt Mhyres got 12 game’s for this. I honestly feel like your looking at a 20 game suspension here.

Our beloved Leafs are no longer tied for 1st in the NHL as the Blackhawks beat the Canucks in OT to give them 11 points on the year, although they have played 8 games, compared to Toronto’s 5.

I agree with the suspension and internal discipline…I just think too many people use a situation like this to money grab, faking injury and trauma etc…and who beat a fan with a shoe? lol
