Game Day Thread: Round Two, Rangers at Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs (4-0-1) look to remain undefeated in regulation tonight against the New York Rangers (1-2-1) at the Air Canada Center in what should be a spirited affair.

Some of the storylines heading into tonight’s game include Sean Avery (surprise, surprise), Kris Versteeg and Dion Phaneuf.

Let’s start with the super pest, Avery. It was only six days ago the 30-year-old agitator was attempting to get under Mike Komisarek’s skin. Surprisingly, Avery only received a two-minute minor and no disciplinary action was taken. My personal opinion aside, Avery should anticipate a whole lot of weight flying his way. However, it’s important the Leafs don’t get too caught up in his antics and avoid taking mindless penalties. If the Leafs avert from their gameplan because of one player, it won’t bode well for the team’s hope to continue its point-streak in the standings. Although the Leafs claim Avery isn’t lingering in their minds, any fan knows it’s not that simple when it comes to hockey.

And what better way to transition from Avery to Phaneuf (just like Elisha Cuthbert)? The Leafs captain has made his presence felt both in the dressing room and on the ice in his limited time in Toronto. The “Dion swagger” has injected a fresh dose of life into a team that has firmly grasped a never-say-die mantra. While fans should keep their expectations grounded for the Leafs, it’s difficult not to at least get optimistic with Phaneuf leading the charge. But it’s not all sunshine and lollipops for the 25-year-old rearguard. Although Phaneuf has recorded three assists in five games, he has yet to light the lamp this season. In fact, he’s only scored two goals in 31 games for the Leafs. That’s not to say he hasn’t been shooting the puck, as he’s ranked second on the team with 20 shots this season (one behind leader Phil Kessel).

The problem has been Phaneuf’s lack of accuracy. During a FAN 590 interview yesterday, it’s interesting that Burke had said the captain’s lack of accuracy was an advantage because the opposition can’t determine the puck’s trajectory, but I can’t help but disagree in this regard. If Phaneuf is to ever regain his 20-goal form, he’ll have to start unloading those slapshots with some direction. What made the powerplay pairing of Tomas Kaberle and Bryan McCabe so effective was that the former-Leaf was capable of identifying the shooting lanes and using traffic to his advantage when unloading his booming slapshot. But maybe, just maybe, Phaneuf’s strategy to shoot wildly as if he’s wearing a blindfold might prove effective eventually. That question will be answered soon enough.

Moving on to Versteeg, it’s no secret the 24-year-old has struggled thus far. Although he leads all forwards in total ice-time (and even-strength ice-time) with a TOI/G of 21:52, it has not been indicative of his play. While he’s been reliable in his own end, despite the -1 +/- rating, he hasn’t been able to bury his chances.

I’m not saying this is the sole reason for his struggles, but perhaps moving him from the top-line, who are all right-handed shooters with linemates Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel, could result in more production. Of course, there’s some concern with disrupting the chemistry between Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin (whose line has tallied 13 points and has a combined +8 rating), who all happen to be left-handed shooters. Until the Leafs lose a couple of games, it’s probably best to avoid any tinkering with the top-six, but it’s definitely something to consider in the future.

Versteeg can play any position so it’s easy to experiment with different line combinations, and having two left-handed players on his line could result in better chemistry for obvious reasons. And the line of Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel has been effective in the past so there’s minimal concern in that regard. But for now, it’s best to ride with the current line-up until they falter.

Anyway, here’s some statistics to consider for tonight’s game:

  • Kessel posted 2 goals and an assist last game against the Rangers, which accounts for half of his career points against the team in 14 games.
  • Colby Armstrong has seven goals, 15 points, two shorthanded points, two game-winning goals, 48 hits and 16 blocks in 26 career games against the Rangers.
  • Alexander Frolov has five goals and seven points in as many games during his career against the Leafs.
  • Sean Avery has six goals and 11 points in as many games in his career against the Leafs.

Prediction: 3-2 Rangers in regulation time.

    @canucksnaphook

The team that has the position of power is the team with the better player in the trade not the team that has more wins in the standings. Right now, the Leafs need a top six forward. If BB wanted Parise or Richards, and if they were both available… BB has to meet the other GM’s conditions. Otherwise there is no deal. Of course there will be some give and take.

Not sure if I should be admitting this but I attended my first game of the season last night… thank god for Armstrong’s goal that made it a shade interesting (as well as Orr winning the round on Boogard) but this was a painful one to watch. Full credit to the Rangers on playing the perfect road game; very defensively responsible from start to finish, scored first to get the crowd out of it, sat back patiently and picked their spots on the Leafs’ defensive miscues. The second and what turned out to be the winning goal could be seen coming from a mile away. Kaberle was entirely too casual about covering the front of the net and back post pass – I yelled Kaberle get your stick down, and sure enough three seconds later he’s standing their wondering how the puck managed to make it’s way to the back of the net.
    -
Komisarek is a disaster waiting to happen every time he handles the puck. I really hope it’s just a matter of adjusting to a system he didn’t spend much time mastering last season due to the injuries, but he’s playing like a poor last pairing defenceman right now and earning $4.5 million in the process.
    -
Not in any way Gustavsson’s fault last night. That’s one major positive – the Leafs have received good enough goaltending to win for all six games so far. The other major positive – Luke Schenn. He’s showing signs he’s more than just a shutdown guy but also has some offensive skills in his arsenal… easily the best Leafs defenceman six games in. Dion had a rough go last night with a lot of careless pinches but it seemed like he was only guilty of trying to do too much as the clock ticked down and the Leafs continued to generate little to nothing.
    -
Haven’t had the chance to look at the stats from last night yet but it seemed like Wilson spent too much time trying to send a message to the top line. The Leafs could’ve used a fast start at the beginning of periods two and three and Wilson didn’t give them the chance to come out after the tongue lashing in the dressing room and make a difference. The Leafs third and fourth lines despite increased ice time (from what I saw) didn’t bring enough energy and physicality for me to try to get the Rangers on their heels, the crowd back into it and the momentum back on the Leaf side.
    -
But again, full marks to the Rangers. They blocked shots admirably and disrupted everything the Leafs tried to get going offensively. Half the time the Leafs couldn’t break the zone. All that said, seemed like it was just an all-around off night for the boys. Simple plays weren’t getting made, the number of times I saw passes mishandled off of simple feeds was unbelievable. I’m comfortable saying “it was just one of those nights.”

hey AB, who was worse Komisarek or Lebda? I think Lebda.

The Rangers did suffocate us, but there was no passion and we didnt win one race to a puck.

    @ Doorman:

Well we can disagree on this point, but I dont think that we have the size or skill up front to compete for a playoff spot. And if Burke is going to pull the trigger it is sooner rather than later when it is too late to salvage this season. We shall see.

A toss up, I think it’s time to give Gunnarsson another chance to get his season going.

I couldn’t believe how most of the guys last night couldn’t even accept a pass properly, how many times did we see a pass hit our players stick and just bounce off only to get picked up by a Ranger. Pathetic really for supposed professional hockey players, you would think they can do that in their sleep…

I think we need a biggie! When and who is the Question? Not at the expense of fucking the team. I would rather take baby steps now; Big one,s Latter.

    @ lonsmos2:

I agree at times the receiving of passes was terrible but there were 10 foot passes that were fuckin rockets. Nobody would control those…I said it during the game that it was ridiculous how hard the passes were. There is crisp passing, and then missiles…..we had the second of the two going last evening.

    @ Doorman:

A month ago if you told me we would start 4-1-1, I would be ecstatic so therefore I am please. no need for bridge jumping just yet. I have a feeling we get run out of Philly on our asses Saturday evening.

Somehow add Clarkson, and Somehow add Richards to the lineup….

yep put it behind us, as someone said earlier one game does not make a trend so until it becomes more than that then lets hope they use this as a learning tool and put it behind them….go Leafs go.

    @ Doorman:

Yes I would. If somebody said we could have Richards (signed) for a Grabbo, Gunnarson, Reimer package I would do it in a micro-second. Wont happen.

If somebody said we could have Clarkson for Lebda and Sjostrom I do that as well. Wont happen but its never a bad time to improve the roster.
