Post-Game Reaction Thread: Back to Basics

You have to wonder if the Leafs got a bit ahead of themselves after the 4-0 start. The offensive game has gotten way too cute; time to simplify, get the puck deep and drive the net. The Leafs tried to play their offensive game above the harshmarks tonight and the result was countless odd man counterattacks (*cough* Versteeg *cough*). Phil Kessel and Clarke MacArthur currently have 12 of 20 Leaf goals this year; members of the secondary cast have to step up production.

For the defence’s part – the overaggressive pinching and joining of the rush and careless giveaways must stop (Schenn and Gunnarsson notwithstanding tonight – Schenn continues to be a stalwart defensively and Gunnarsson had a pretty good bounceback game). Full marks to Flyers, they were hungry and strong in all three zones. Would’ve loved to see how Boucher would’ve fared if tested with more rubber, however. Keep in mind it’s a process for this young team and the season is long.

On a positive note:

    @ Nazem.K-savzri:
Dude he was a 3rd overall pick… For what is expected of a player drafted in that position, he has been a bust. And it isn’t for not jumping into the NHL right away, although lots of top 3 picks do. That is acceptable. Even his rookie numbers are alright for a 19 year old. But making the team one year, then not making it the next year and going to the AHL is not what you want to see out of any prospect. The fact that he was such a high pick and did that is very disappointing, as being demoted to a lower league for a whole season isn’t very good progression.
    .
And of course he looked like he was miles above anyone else in the BCHL… It’s a junior A league for duck sakes. Obviously he must have been head and shoulders above most of, if not all of the rest of the league to be drafted 3rd overall, ahead of most of the players from much higher levels of hockey to be drafted in the same year…
    .
Also… Were you on his team? Were you friends with him? Just wondering if there’s any potential bias in your opinion.

He could have played in the NHL last year. They decided to burn a year of his contract in favor of AHL development. He was skilled enough, but they elected to stop forcing draft picks onto the scene too early. It set a precedent for Boedker, TIkhonov, and others – become a professional first, then join the team. Smart management. Remember, it took VanRiemsdyk a long time to make the big leagues too. Problem with Turris was, he wasn’t physically ready for the NHL. It had little to do with skill…

According to Ken Beckett, Burke does not intend to do either of the trades that were proposed to him, but is encouraged by the talk of movement.

Totally off-topic, but I just read that Manny Ramirez would like to play for the Blue Jays, now that they have hired John Farrell as Manager.
I really hope that Alex Anthopoulos is smarter than J.P. Riccardi and doesn’t sign a 38 year old Ramirez to a deal similar to Frank Thomas.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him brought in on a one year deal, if priced right, to mentor some of the younger out-fiedlers (Lind and Snider) however I wouldn’t want him taking a spot from them.
With Bautista, Wells, Lind and Snider already set to play outfied for the Jays, I really dont’ see where Man-Ram would fit in.
Although, I guess Bautista could be moved ot either 1B or 3B, while Wells, Ramirez, Lind and Snider play in the field and take turns as DH, when they need a bit of a rest.

you’re exactly right; it wasn’t smart management. which is why they rectified it the following season organization-wide.

    @ Schenn:
Where did you here this about Man Ram? I was listening to the radio today and Adam Lind was on and apparently there is talk of moving Lind to 1st base, so there could be room for Manny, even as just the DH.

I feel bad about deflecting the conversation to baseball and the Blue Jays, but I thought it was worthwhile to mention Manny’s interest in Toronto.
I also had to let everybody know that I would be completely against bringing him in on a Thomas type of deal for big money over 2 years, just to be the everyday DH. I don’t believe in having a designated DH that can’t play anywhere else. I’d much rather have a few guy that can actaully contribute defensively to the team take turns as DH.
If the Jays don’t resign Overbay and Lind does infact move to 1B, then I’d consider signing Ramirez and have him platoon with Snider in LF/DH.

    @ Andrew R:
Gotta think Lind will be moved to first base and they will try to sign a 3rd baseman, can’t see them going with Encarnacion fulltime at 3B.
It’s really too bad they traded Wallace, I thought he would be able to come up and take over the 1B job from Overbay.
    .
Gotta remember, they’ve also got Freddy Lewis and DeWayne Wise to fill play outfield when the regulars need a rest.
    .
    How about this lineup?
    C: Buck/Arencibia
    1B: Lind/Overbay
    2B: Hill/McDonald
    SS: Escobar/McDonald/McCoy
    3B: Encarncion/Bautista
    LF: Snider/Ramirez
    CF: Wells/Wise
    RF: Bautista/Lewis

    Boys,
heard from a reliable source that Papoulbon or however you spell his name, he’s the closer for the Red sox, and Cliff Lee are really close friends with the Jays new manager and they might sign with Toronto.
