Game Day Thread: Panthers at Leafs (7 p.m., Sportsnet)

One of the more effective line renderings of the 2009-10 campaign has been reunited for tonight’s match-up against the Florida Panthers at the Air Canada Centre. Nikolai Kulemin and the struggling Kris Versteeg have swapped places in the top six, with Kulemin rejoining Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel on unit one and Versteeg uniting with Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski on the second line. Here’s hoping sparks fly and the Leafs re-establish themselves offensively after a recent dry spell of only four goals in their last three.

In theory, Wilson’s change seems to balance the top two lines a bit better. Kulemin brings a left handed shot, a bigger body down low and a sorely needed net presence on the powerplay to the first trio; Versteeg a right handed shot to the second (previously lines one and two were all right handed and left handed respectively). Versteeg is also now out of the top match up, which could be beneficial as he looks to gain confidence and get his season on track.

Kulemin also adds an element of playmaking to the first line that could help Bozak’s production along; where Versteeg and Kessel are more shoot-first, Kulemin – while owning a good shot of his own as well – is more of a capable and willing passer. Versteeg for his part must cut down on the turn overs and simplify his game; his -4 rating is not reflective of his ability at either end of the ice.

The only player with the dubious honour of a worse plus/minus than Versteeg at the moment is captain Phaneuf (-5). At this point it seems to be mostly a byproduct of trying too hard and lacking discipline in his decisions of when to pinch and join the rush. Picking your spots better and limiting turnovers were more than likely points of emphasis for the coaching staff not only for Phaneuf but partner Francois Beauchemin and the team as a whole. The Leafs as a collective have 86 giveaways in 7 games, the third highest total in the league.

The Leafs have lost their last two against the Panthers but split last year’s four game season series. In both losing efforts, the Maple Leafs ran into hot Florida goaltenders, first getting shut out by Tomas Vokun in a 2-0 loss in late January and then mustering only one past Scott Clemmensen on 42 shots in a 4-1 loss in March. Thankfully the Leafs still won, but Bryan McCabe scored twice against the Leafs in game two of the season series in early January and he comes into tonight as the Panthers’ assists leader with five helpers through six.

The Leafs hold a definite physical edge and must use this to the full advantage tonight. Their 195 hits place them sixth league wide whereas Florida sits dead last by a fair margin with just 96. The Panthers are also the least penalized team in the league (Cory Stillman is the goon with a team-leading 6PIMs) at a mere 5.5 penalty minutes per game. The Leafs’ powerplay is slipping itself (now 19th at 12.5%), but Florida sits last in that category with just one goal in 23 man advantage situations (4.4 percent success rate). Given the Panthers are .500 despite that incompetency, they seem to be playing pretty good 5-on-5 hockey at the moment. In other words, the Leafs must continue to play physical and cash in on the PP chances if they get ‘em.

Jean Sebastien Giguere will be back between the pipes tonight in hopes of a rebound performance after conceding five in Philadelphia. Giguere wasn’t at his best but must have felt like the ice was tilted toward his net after facing 45 shots. I like the decision to go right back to him instead of letting him sit on that one.

Toss your predictions in the comments.

    @ Schenn:
About our fans at the ACC I have been saying that for years now. We have the most boring fans in the N.H.L. and there is nothing anyone can do about it……….If we can put the same fans in the seats at the ACC that we had back in 93 man that crowd was awesome the playoff home games where so loud we could blow the roof of any building back then….And what do we have now maybe a good 2-3 hundred fans that wanna chant GO LEAFS GO and get behind our team but can not get anyone else to help out………The rest just sit there on there hands waiting to boo for a mistake made or a goal against……….There are way to many suits in the seats these days got to get back to the years when a real die hard leaf fan would stand in line for hours to get that last ticket to see his best team on the planet play hockey……..Now it is ask his secretary to call ahead and book 20 tickets for him and his colleges to go and talk about what happened in the office today………………Come on LEAFS FANS lets get behind our team from start to finish not just when we score a goal or win a fight…………Like when we all sing the national anthem they say sing it loud and sing it proud man we can sure sing and sing loud they must be able to hear us on MARS……….So next home game lets make noise and go LEAF crazy……….GO LEAFS GO…..GO LEAFS GO………is it working yet……..We are 5-2-1……not 0-7 where we can boo ……..but people we are a better team………..We as a fan must get behind our team……….

    @ djglenn:

Cut ticket prices in half and maybe we’ll see the real fans out there every night, but as it stands, the men in suits are the only one’s that can realistically afford to attend leaf games on a regular basis.

I’d love to see the place packed with real fans just as much as you, but personally I don’t have the income to pay $70 or more on tickets as well as at least $15 for dinner, add on beer and snacks, as well as the drive there and back (from Barrie).

lol, Howard is a douche. All I can say is Karma is a bitch. Selling your soul for $$ will come around and bite you in the ass. Fact is, he will lose all respect not only from the fan base here in Toronto but from his fellow sports analysts, right down to the teams around the league. He won’t be able to give an interview nor go into any dressing room when all said is done.

Grabovski has been the Leafs’ third best forward this year so far based on overall all-around play.

I couldnt help myself and had to read bergers blog.
At first i was reading it and thought it was funny about colton orr going to argos practice but then he just started getting to angry and unprofessional.
It was a horrible call by the officials and the Florida goal wasnt even comparible as Orrs was blantantly obvious. But as a leaf fan or fan of any team when your team scores your gonna cheer. No ifs and ORR buts!!!!!

@ djglenn: Part of the problem is also the cost of attending. It’s way over what most people can afford. I’m not even talking about buying food/drinks. Spending $200 + parking/train for 2 people to go to a game is insanity. Try bringing a family. Want to buy tickets? Well, I hope you signed up on the internet to pre-order you tickets months ahead of time, or else you’ll be buying from a third party ticket service or a scalper (same thing).

I got tickets to watch the Leafs once when they played Washington. I received them as a christmas present. My mom had to ask her boyfriend, who then had to ask his friend, who then had to do god knows what to get me into that game…..just because I wanted to go to a December 23rd game to watch Ovechkin. We went plain clothes, MLSE doesn’t need anymore money from me for that game.

i think Caputi will play all out to try and stay with the big club. He could be a good addition on the PP to to stand in front as I am sure he will do

I think Caputi is further along with his professional development whereby Irwin is still learning his way as this is really his first year in the pros except for a few games at year end last year.

If its Caputi, terrific, he was the better of the bunch all through training camp and he is tough enough to deal with the Bruins. Let Irwin, who is slow develop more in the AHL.

It is in fact Luca Caputi getting the call from the Marlies. Third on the ice this morning.
    >

Just to confirm what we already know. Surprised Luca didn’t tweet himself about it.

Very nice, I think Caputi either got a goal or set one up last year against Boston. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a hardworking effort.
