Burke Reiterates Leafs ‘Open For Business’, Again

Nothing gets Leafs Nation into a frenzy quicker than some good old fashioned trade rumours and with the recent news breaking that Brian Burke is “open for business” it was obviously going to make headlines.  Bob McKenzie was told by his sources that the Leafs had an offer on the table involving two bottom six forwards coming to Toronto for one of our current NHL bottom six forwards and an AHL player.  Burke basically inferred the offer was half way decent so it likely would have solidified our bottom six forward lines slightly, but nothing to really get worked up about.

Burke was quoted:

“We have cap space and budget space, and I would say we hadn’t even gotten a sniff until the last two days, and now it’s finally starting to heat up,” said Burke. “We’re encouraged that we’re finally starting to get something on the line. Everyone knew we had space and budget room, and nothing was happening. Now I’m a little more encouraged.”

By deductive reasoning we can probably ascertain which forward the Leafs were willing to part with, or another team might have actually wanted.  First, we can easily scratch Mike Brown, Colby Armstrong, Freddy Sjostrom and Colton Orr as all three are beloved by Brian Burke or Ron Wilson (Sjostrom) and each fill a role the Leafs covet.  That leaves Mike Zigomanis, Tim Brent and John Mitchell.

As you can tell this probably didn’t even deserve to be mentioned but this is the first trade rumour of 2010/11 and I was bored so sue me.  Of the three I’d guess John Mitchell has the most value on the trade market (if that says much) as Brent and Zigomanis have already made their organizational rounds and there could be a team out there that believes Mitchell has some untapped potential, plus he is still a cheap option and one would have to assume teams are hoping the Leafs can help out a bit with their own salary cap issues.

It is anybody’s guess who the Toronto Marlies player would have been. I am not sure if it is also a ‘bottom six’ type forward or possibly a defenseman, though it is doubtful Burke would move any of the promising young defenseman we have down there whether it is Korbinian Holzer, Keith Aullie or Simon Gysbers.  It is also unlikely another team is willing to take on Jeff Finger’s contract so early into the season so the player involved is likely not of much consequence either.

It also raises the question as to exactly who would have been out of a job if a trade like this was made or if Burke is actively trying to improve the bottom six as Bob McKenzie alluded to on his twitter account.  With no realistic (or economically feasible) top six options (and forget about a legit number one centre) there is talk the Maple Leafs will try to shore up the bottom six, but if there has been one real source of strength and stability early into the season I’d say the bottom six forwards has been it.

Tim Brent has won face-offs, scored a couple timely goals while Mike Brown has infused the team with energy and is a strong penalty killer.  Colton Orr is Brian Burke’s guy and has played well above his normal level early.  Colby Armstrong has been slightly disappointing to me but is clearly not going anywhere after signing a fairly lucrative three-year contract in the off season and has shown glimpses of what can offer to the Leafs.

To conclude the bottom six forwards have done their jobs and have performed them above expectations thus far while the chemistry has also been solid and that is not something a wise GM like Burke would be looking to mess up.

This feels more like a case of Brian Burke getting the message out that the Leafs are officially open for business and have the cap space to prove it.  Notice how he was also quoted as saying “we have budget space” which translated to me as meaning we will take your garbage for an asset or two and have the ability to bury said player in the minor leagues if need be.  So give us your weak, tired and your poor along with a draft pick or two and we might have something.

Stay tuned…

I wouldn’t want us wasting the cap space we have on a bottom 6 guy that we don’t need. Hold onto that until the trade deadline would be more valuable imo.

About a deal for mitchell… I think it will be a deal kinda like the Wolski for Mueller deal.. or better yet Latendresse for Pouliot…. More like a stuggling player with upside for a struggling player with upside.
PS. Not saying Mitchell is better then these players or worse for that matter

After 8 games our record is 5-2-1. Not too bad considering that I don’t think we have really fired on all cylinders yet. Why are we winning?
    1) Decent goaltending
    2) Phil Kessel, Luke Schenn, and yes Tomas Kaberle are off to very good starts.
    3) Our forwards back check. Grabovski just doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his defensive game.
    4) Our PK is good

Here why we could be better?
    1) Versteeg should get much better
    2) Kulemin should start scoring more goals
    3) Grabovski and Bozak are playing decent offensively but I think they can be better.
    4) PP still not clicking

So it appears this years early favourite for a player hate on is Mitchell. Seems like everyone has have a leaf to hate if they are a real fan. Every year we pick someone to hate through some gossip selection process.

I dont hate Mitchell, I just dont think he should be on the team. My nomination for player to hate is Lebda.

Completely agree with you, everybody wants to throw the bus on Mitchell when hes only played one game this season and really made no mistakes in his debut. I think most people are just pissed that Mitchell made the team over guys like Hanson, Kadri and Caputi which is rightfully so but it not Mitchells fault, get mad at management.
I was really happy when the leafs resigned Mitchell, and his skating did look much improved from last year. Unfortunalty, he still does seem reluctant to throw his weight around and go hard to the net. If he ever gets the desire to do these things he will be our 3 maybe even second line center

    @ IBleaf:
oh God I hope Mitchell is never our 2nd line centre. Problem with Mitchell is that he doesn’t score enough to justify a top 6 role and he doesn’t hit or defend well enough to deserve a bottom 6 role. He’s a shitty version of Stajan. I dont hate the guy, I just dont think he fits the mold of this team

Agree on the Mitchell bit, disagree on Lebda. I actually like Mitchell but he just isn’t good enough and has had plenty of opportunities to prove himself. I firmly believe BB signed him for two reasons: 1) add a bit of depth at center until something better comes along; 2) trade fodder. In salary dump trades you have to send something back so Mitchell is it.
    .
Lebda on the otherhand needs more than 2 or 3 games to show us what he’s got.

Man I’m getting more and more pissed off with TSN. Did anyone see the That’s Hockey segment last night where they talked about doing a poll ( they did poll the coaches and 14 are in favour of a challenge rule of some sort) in light of the Leafs stealing a game from the Panthers ( quote from Gino Reda). Any other team besides the leafs and its a non issue. These guys are sounding more like Berger everyday

    @ Burtonboy:

The Leafs hardly stole the game. Sure it was a blown call, but it was the Leafs who made that call. Not to mention it was a tie game with 8 minutes left, it could easily have gone either way had the goal been waived off.

    @ Loric:
my brother is a big Wings fan and when Lebda was signed he laughed and said “leave it to the Leafs to sign our worst defensemen and talk him up like he’s something special” I didn’t like the signing when it happened and I dont like it now. Lebda has had more than 2 or 3 games to show us what he’s made of, he’s played in over 300 games, just not with us. He’s a 7th dman and he’s no better than Finger or Lashoff. All i’ve seen him do for us is take a penalty that snapped our 4 game winning streak and then the next game take a stupid penalty that shifted the momentum when we were down by 1 goal. I’ve seen bad turnovers and giveaways, bad passes (which Leafs nation was told is his strong point), and no physicality. I’ve seen all this through more than the 3 games he’s played for us, through his career. This guy isn’t a rookie, he’s a stanley cup winning veteran that learned from the likes of Lidstrom and Rafalski, he should be better than he is but he’s not and never will be.
    .
I miss Gunnarsson. Yeah he’s played shitty this year but so did Schenn last year. Schenn was benched but it wasn’t like this, he was given a greater opportunity to work through his slump and came out a better player because of it. Gunnar hasn’t played any worse than Lebda, who, IMO has played horribly. The only difference between Gunnar and Schenn is draft position and i’m convinced that it is the only reason that Gunnar isn’t being given the same chances that Schenn was last year.

I just honestly think that they would have brought this up if it happened to any other team. Obviously the Leafs get a lot of talk since of the size of the franchise and fanbase, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, we are not the be-all end-all of the hockey universe, and if you look at it objectively, it’s just another debate for TSN to air.

As much as we all know talking anything Leafs on TSN means ratings, especially controversy, it’s annoying that there wasn’t any discussion like this last week when Steeger’s goal against the Isles was turned back…nevermind that Colton’s goal was much more of a spectacular failure on the refs part…Steegers was debatable, this one was as obvious as it gets lol.

Man, I am so sad today.

Because here is another day I have to listen to how shit Burke is for trading Seguin for a nobody named Kessel (is that how you spell it?). The Star is a fuckin joke, i get they try and create a shit storm but that act is really getting tired.

7 goals in 8 games not points…..goals. Fuck off Toronto MSM you are the joke not the Kessel deal.
