GDT: Leafs at Bruins – A Challenge in Net

Update: John Mitchell will step in for Kris Versteeg on the second line, who can’t go tonight due to a sore back. Should be interesting to see if Mitchell can bring some size and forecheck/board play ability to that line. Mike Zigomanis will line up at fourth line centre.

Are the Maple Leafs‘ winning ways back in front of them? Has their controversial victory over the Florida Panthers moved the club back into a mean streak? The scoring is certainly present for forward Phil Kessel, but the Leafs still need to stay aggressive in the offensive zone. Tonight, they’ll face their biggest challenge (in goal) as Tim Thomas leads the league in both goals against average (0.75) and save percentage (0.978). Thomas has yet to lose a game this season and the Leafs will hope to put a dent in that stat in particular. Thomas has played a large part of it (he’s undefeated at 4-0 whereas Rask is 0-2 so far) but the Bruins’ stingy defence boasts the lowest goals against per game total (1.83) in the league six games into the season.

The game will also present an interesting but what is sure to be overhyped story. Phil Kessel, acquired from Boston last year for a few draft picks, will face-off against the player selected 2nd overall at the recent NHL Entry Draft – Tyler Seguin. In a clash of future vs. present, Kessel hopes his difficulties against the Bruins are behind him so he may prove a point to Bruins and Leafs fans alike.

Toronto will be without forward Colby Armstrong (4 to 6 weeks) after he suffered a slash on the hand on Tuesday night against the Panthers. Luca Caputi was called up to take his spot on the third line. Kris Versteeg is questionable with a day-to-day back problem and John Mitchell will be prepared to step into the line-up if he can’t go.

The last three games these two clubs have played against each other have gone past the 60 minute mark, but the Bruins finished the 09-10 season with a 4-1-1 record against the Leafs (2-2-2). In fact, the Bruins have only lost 13 games to the Leafs since the lockout, posting a victory-vs.-leafs record of 23 wins.

Jonas Gustavsson will start for the Leafs. He’s 1-1-1, but his appearances seemed to have coincided with the Leafs’ worst performances of the season so far. He’s given the Leafs a chance to win in all three games and that’s what a good goalie does.

Who’s Hot? Leafs:

Phil Kessel (RW) 6 pts in last 5 GP
Nikolai Kulemin (LW/RW) 2 pts in last 2 GP
Clarke MacArthur (LW) 8 pts in last 8 GP

Who’s Hot? Bruins:

Nathan Horton (RW) 9 pts in last 6 GP
David Krejci (C) 6 pts in last 5 GP
Milan Lucic (LW) 6 pts in last 6 GP
Tim Thomas (G) 4-0-0, 0.75, .978 in last 4 GPI

I will be liveblogging the game tonight, so be sure to join in on the discussion!

Wait Pazuzu are you saying that Ricahrds is a good player , according to King Cameron he is overrated and would rather have the forwards we have right now. We need some talent on this team , true talent .

Again, he did this in a shutdown role, just like Bolland and Kesler do it. He doesn’t play with snipers, because it would be pointless – he can’t make pretty passes to a guy like Kessel. He scores by using the cycle, and driving the net. Watch him play, he would be wasted on our top line. And I know you are just trying to twist my words, but I can assure you, no one is fooled. I did not say that I would prefer MacArthur and Grabovski to Richards – not at all. I simply inferred that you would be willing to give up over half our team for a guy who’s greatest asset is putting up points and then not making the playoffs.

Should I use the direct quote you wrote ,where you said that Richards is overrated and you thought that Garbo, Beauchmen and Clark are worth more than him. When you write stupid things like that people will call you out on your stupidity that’s all. Oh by the way I’m curious you think that Kesler, Bolland and Backes are also not worth Garboski?? I never said that I would give up the whole team at all, I said we need some true talent on this team that’s all.

And Dion? C’mon! He had 3 great seasons with Calgary, had a down year(by his lofty standards) and was in the dog house when the ever depressed D.Sutter went behind the bench, had the media telling the world he was a cancer, then got traded to what is probably the center of the hockey universe in the biggest trade anyone saw in God knows ho long, has a 6.5 million dollar cap hit to boot, is called the savior of said franchise, and has the utmost respect of his coach and GM !! Of course he’s gonna push and press it. He needs time to settle in and realize he has to take care of the defensive side first. He’s going to be in Toronto for a good long time and he’ll get it together I have no doubt about it.

Have to say it makes me feel like this is the “monday night war” when Scott “Razor Ramon” Hall and Kevin “Diesel” Nash show up on WCW Nitro proclaiming to be from the old school WWF and they are here to take names and numbers :) God how I miss the old times haha

Leafs need a center plain and simple, the are one of the weakest teams down in the middle in the entire league. Bozak will make a decent second line center one day and we severely lack any actual top line talent on the entire team, minus Kessel.

It’s a stupid opinon that the Leafs need talent, yeah I can see that. Fans like you give the entire Leaf fan base a bad name, happy with mediocrity and I’m assuming think that this team has the stuff to do some real damage in the playoffs this year right. Wake up this team is good enough to land another top ten picks this year, unless they land a true center and get some bigger bodied forwards up front.

    @Cameron
Backes is a Leaf, I’m almost certain of it. we need a guy like him in the top 6.

My take on it is, I think B. Richards would take a heep of pressure off of Kessel. Love him or hate him, much like Kessel, he’s a dynamic player who warrants attention. If you are gonna double team Phil, yer fucked, cause Brad will fuckin’ burn ya and vice versa. If the PP ain’t rocking, throw Brad on the point and watch it happen(2 on 1 vs us or goal, not sure haha), but one thing is for certain, in my mind, B. Richards adds a dimension this team hasn’t seen since Dougie Gilmour.
