Game Day Thread: Leafs/Rangers Round 3

For the third time this season (and this month) the New York Rangers will clash with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In their first two meetings (4-3 OT win Leafs / 2-1 win Rangers), each have conquered the other on the road. Toronto will look to avoid recent history repeating by earning the victory in this match-up at home, and someone will be sporting pink skates.

Toronto has scored just 7 goals in their last 5 games, and the result have been a string of losses. With change in mind for tonight’s game, the Leafs have called up Christian Hanson from the Marlies to do his worst (physically) against the Rangers.

“They want me to play a little more tenacious, a little more physical role,” said Hanson. “I’m taking faceoffs, playing centre now, I’ve got to bear down and win 50 to 55 per cent of those.”

Snake-bit scoring forward Kris Versteeg will also be back in the line-up tonight. With two bodies inserted for tonight’s game, it’s expected John Mitchell and Mike Zigomanis will have the night off.

There’s a secondary battle underway tonight for the Leafs. In the fight against cancer, Colton Orr will be sporting a pair of pink skates, and for the main fighter on the Leafs roster, it’s quite fitting.

“I had a teammate and friend, he was 18 and he passed away from synovial sarcoma,” Orr said Saturday morning. “Just being involved in any kind of cancer awareness is a privilege and an honour for me to help out any way I can.”

Giguere will be back in action tonight after Gustavsson got the start against Boston. He has posted a 4-1-1 record this year (including the overtime victory against the Rangers) with a 0.908 save percentage and a 2.30 goals against average.

The Rangers are currently on a two-game losing streak and coming off a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes last night. Gaborik, Prospal and Drury will still be on the sidelines for tonight’s game. Tough guy Derek Boogaard is also questionable with a finger infection (note: this injury was not caused by Jeff Finger). Henrik Lundqvist will be between the pipes for the Rangers. He has a 0.909 save percentage and a 3.15 goals against average this season.

Who’s Hot? Toronto:

Phil Kessel (RW) 9 pts in last 9 GP

Who’s Hot? New York:

Ryan Callahan (RW) 6 pts in last 3 GP
Brandon Dubinsky (C/LW) 4 pts in last 3 GP
Henrik Lundqvist (G) 2-1-0, 2.35, .932 in last 3 GPI

I will be liveblogging this game tonight, along with George Prax who will be covering the Habs/Panthers game. So be sure to tune in and give us your opinion on the game and discussion. Habs-bashing is optional.

It’s hardly a conspiracy theory, you can literally watch teams take their game up another level against us. You think players get fired up to play Florida? Half of the hockey world is from Southern Ontario and either loves or hates the Leafs. Playing on Hockey Night in Canada is special. How many times do we see the opposition has 2 or 3 players who’ve brought their entire extended family and all their friends to the game? It happens almost every week. You can write it off as ridiculous if you want, but the fact of the matter is that the Leafs and the Habs contend with something that none of the other 28 teams do in this regard. If you were in the NHL, wouldn’t you want to find an extra gear in Toronto on HNIC? Wouldn’t you want to block that shot just a little bit more? Try just a little harder to make that ridiculous pad save?
    -
It’s not an excuse, but dealing with that added adrenaline players get in Toronto is something we need to learn to deal with better.

No not the entire league. Just 25 other teams, seriously I have not seen this type of hockey in the regular season for a while. A lot of hype surrounds guys when they come here, this team needs a good stretch on the road, maybe it helps them gel a bit more….dunno.

I’d love to see Burke try to fire the team up without making any real personnel moves. Trade for Wheeler, and sign Guerin. Two guns added to the roster might make everyone feel a little more comfortable with the team’s overall scoring prowess. Might also shock Kulemin into finding the net, and Versteeg into owning the PP like he did to start the season.
    -
    Wheeler – Bozak – Kessel
    Kulemin – Grabo – Guerin
    MacArthur – Versteeg – Caputi
    Sjostrom – Brent – C.Orr
    (Brown)
    -
Double shift Caputi, Versteeg and MacArthur into Guerin’s spot as the game allows – he doesn’t need to be out there 20 minutes a night to score – throw him out on the PP and give him the odd shift. Have him on the bench shouting encouragement.

On another note, I think Komi has been playing well in his limited minutes. I haven’t noticed Kaberle’s play drop off like some have mentioned but I’ve missed a few periods this week so I defer…but agree that Kaberle seems to be at his best when he plays a lot and in all situations. I don’t think he’s the type you need to light a fire under either. RW should just give him a little kiss on the forehead and send him out there to have fun.

Yea, you’re right. Playing on the pinnacle of hockey’s media, fulfilling childhood fantasies, and going against the league’s most hated franchise is probably just an ordinary night for all the players in the league. I bet they don’t even notice the throngs of reporters that cover them doing everything from warming up to taking a shit. And I’m sure none of the homegrown Southern Ontario talent cares at all about playing in front of family and friends.

It’s just that Kaberle isn’t dominating the games like he was to start the year. It’s hard for any defensemen to maintain that though. Lidstrom doesn’t even control games like that on a regular basis. He’s always very solid of course, but taking it to that special level only comes in bunches for most defensemen.

    @ Cameron:

I thought he looked very composed and slick with the puck again last night. Our forwards are drifting wayyyy too high looking for a breakaway pass, so its tough to make that happen.

Kabs and Schenn are quite the pairing, I love them together.

    @ dlb:
I haven’t missed a minute yet this year and probably watched over 65 games last year. I stream as many as possible. I also watch some non-leaf games, I admit that it isn’t nearly as many but i’m not just talking out of my ass here. No offense taken btw and I like I said in my previous post, I dont mean to be rude, I enjoy good discussion on this site and all of this is my opinion. Mac has started strong for the last couple of years and as of right now it appears that he has done just that again. Versteeg has never been given this much responsibility and nobody knew how he would respond to it, so far it hasn’t been a positive response but I am confident he will settle down and play better. Kulemin is a great grinder for a second line and has a hell of a shot but isn’t a 1st liner just yet. Bozak isn’t far into his NHL career but he is 24 years old, he can still develop into a better player but his ceiling probably isn’t much higher that his current level which makes him a good 2nd line centre. My biggest concern is size. We absolutely need some bigger bodies on this team, I wonder where our forwards stand in this league for average size? I bet its not very high

I know I’ve said some things about a few of the players but I think is some cases its justiified. Most of the players on this team are or will be decent 2 nd or 3rd line plyers. Right now we only have 2 guys doing all the scoring and the rest are in a scoring slump. That can’t last much longer and in a week or so we’ll be back on track.

    @ 4evrblue:
Size, is so overrated though. Look at Montreal last year. They we’re tiny but they’re player’s played with heart and bought into the team system. Right now our player’s aren’t doing that. Bozak is only 24 year’s old and he’s played less than 50 NHL game’s. While I don’t think he is a 1st line center at this point of his career. I still think he can develop into one. Starting your career at 22 or 23 used to be the norm. Play until your 20 in junior have 1 or 2 year’s in the AHL, or play until your 21 or 22 in college and then spend a year or two in the AHL. But now we live in this instant gratification era. Where player’s have to be superstar’s instantly and aren’t allowed to develop at their own pace. They’re all judged against Crosby and Stamkos, who are by all mean’s freak’s of nature. Anyway’s I think Bozak has something not all player’s have and that is great hockey sense, he’s just struggling through a bit of a sophomore slump. Remember his college coach said he was better than Paul Stastny in Denver and Stastny is no slouch and is a number 1 center.

i’m really just sick of hearing “the only reason that the leafs are so bad is because…… well….. they’re the leafs. The media this blah blah blah……. the fans expectations that blah blah blah” These guys are professionals and are supposed to bring their “A” game every night but they dont. We only have 1 top line player, we dont have the size needed to compete, we aren’t getting secondary scoring, these are the reasons that we are losing, no conspiracy, no excuses, no bullshit, the team I love isn’t a contender yet.

    @ 4evrblue:

Not even close to contending. But I like the direction we are heading.

Kessel is a pure sniper and has made at least 4 solid passes in the last two games. These passes were on the door step and shouldve been converted. Even if he isnt scoring he should be about 13 pts in 10 games. Not too fuckin bad. Problem is he is surrounded by duds, and I get an queasy mats sundin feeling he wont have any talent around him for a long time.

That’s true, and I wasn’t denying any of that really. But dlb’s original point still stands. Yes, we need more top level talent, and yes, some of the players need to step their game up, and yes, secondary scoring needs to come. However, none of that changes the fact that the Leafs deal with adversaries who have a heightened desire to win every night. Only the Leafs and the Habs really deal with that on a nightly basis, whereas other teams have one or two rivalries to deal with. We absolutely dominated the Rangers from start to finish last night, and lost the game. We hit posts, and missed open nets, and got robbed by one of the best goalies in the league on numerous occassions. Yes, they have been lacklustre at times, but to say they didn’t brng their A game last night is wrong in my opinion.

    @ Cameron:
I will continue to blame games like last night on lack of talent. I didn’t see any of the shots that got through get tipped, out of the 36 shots 17 were taken by our defense, almost half and i’m willing to bet that for 10 of those there wasn’t a leaf jersey in front. Also out of the 36 shots i’m willing to bet that 10 of them were taken from guys that crossed the blueline and just wired it on net because there was no other play. Even Cherry was talking about it during the intermission, shots that have no chance to beat any goaltender not named Lalime. We need more talent to finish plays.
