Game Day Thread: Leafs/Rangers Round 3

For the third time this season (and this month) the New York Rangers will clash with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In their first two meetings (4-3 OT win Leafs / 2-1 win Rangers), each have conquered the other on the road. Toronto will look to avoid recent history repeating by earning the victory in this match-up at home, and someone will be sporting pink skates.

Toronto has scored just 7 goals in their last 5 games, and the result have been a string of losses. With change in mind for tonight’s game, the Leafs have called up Christian Hanson from the Marlies to do his worst (physically) against the Rangers.

“They want me to play a little more tenacious, a little more physical role,” said Hanson. “I’m taking faceoffs, playing centre now, I’ve got to bear down and win 50 to 55 per cent of those.”

Snake-bit scoring forward Kris Versteeg will also be back in the line-up tonight. With two bodies inserted for tonight’s game, it’s expected John Mitchell and Mike Zigomanis will have the night off.

There’s a secondary battle underway tonight for the Leafs. In the fight against cancer, Colton Orr will be sporting a pair of pink skates, and for the main fighter on the Leafs roster, it’s quite fitting.

“I had a teammate and friend, he was 18 and he passed away from synovial sarcoma,” Orr said Saturday morning. “Just being involved in any kind of cancer awareness is a privilege and an honour for me to help out any way I can.”

Giguere will be back in action tonight after Gustavsson got the start against Boston. He has posted a 4-1-1 record this year (including the overtime victory against the Rangers) with a 0.908 save percentage and a 2.30 goals against average.

The Rangers are currently on a two-game losing streak and coming off a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes last night. Gaborik, Prospal and Drury will still be on the sidelines for tonight’s game. Tough guy Derek Boogaard is also questionable with a finger infection (note: this injury was not caused by Jeff Finger). Henrik Lundqvist will be between the pipes for the Rangers. He has a 0.909 save percentage and a 3.15 goals against average this season.

Who’s Hot? Toronto:

Phil Kessel (RW) 9 pts in last 9 GP

Who’s Hot? New York:

Ryan Callahan (RW) 6 pts in last 3 GP
Brandon Dubinsky (C/LW) 4 pts in last 3 GP
Henrik Lundqvist (G) 2-1-0, 2.35, .932 in last 3 GPI

I will be liveblogging this game tonight, along with George Prax who will be covering the Habs/Panthers game. So be sure to tune in and give us your opinion on the game and discussion. Habs-bashing is optional.

    @ Tim:
What if it doesn’t fail? Why would that be a terrible message to the team? Should they just let him continue to play poorly on defense? I think that would be worse. He is not a shut down d-man. Luke Schenn and to a lesser degree Komisarek and Beachemin are.
Kaberle is an exceptional puck mover and power play quarterback. Also, he would be a skill forward (which we have enough of) if he were moved up and not a power forward. Ron Wilson has been using Dion in front of the net on the power play. Why is the idea of moving him full time to forward such a bad idea?

$6.5 a year for Dion, for how many more years? that’s a lot of scratch for a guy. enough to play like one of the best in the whole league really. i hope he finds his form.

as of now, luke is our best d-man.

Yup. Anyone who thought otherwise would have been going against the grain on this site, and not listening to Burke’s interviews…the word has always been “hope”in regards to making the playoffs while the young team comes together and prospects develop.

    - I noticed Sjostrom has an awful time getting the puck out when it comes up the boards to him.
    - His line has been “hemmed in” a lot this year, and Armstrong was the one consistant piece to help alleviate that stress by getting the puck, slowing the play, and getting it out.
    - Sure Sjostrom is good on the PK and has finished his checks, but now I know who I’d remove from a healthy lineup if we could add a top 3 talent.
    - Move MacArthur, Versteeg or Kulemin down to the 3rd line, depending on how the top lines are clicking.

Who is it that likes to collect the stats and work them into articles? i’m calling on them now to do something for me.
We all know that the Leafs seem to get a lot of shots blocked. I’d like to see how bad it is and try to figure out what it means.
If my calculations are correct, the NYR’s blocked 35 on us last night, and in 10 games this year they have averaged 19 blocks per game…bit of a disparagy…especially if you tell me the average gets lower when you remove the other 2 games they’ve played the Leafs from the equation.
I watch other games on TV (non Leaf games) and I rarely see guys diving in front of shots like I see in Leaf games. We all know that teams get up for the Leafs, and I think part of the problem the Leafs are having in this new NHL where coaches are teaching players to block shots instead of giving the goalie a free lane to see them…well…I think we’re just out of luck.
So, the silver lining is that if we ever do make the playoffs we’ll be prepared for playoff hockey considering we’ve played it all year :)

    @ dlb:
They are not blocking them we are shooting the pucks right into them……..Like back in the old days a block shot is putting your body on the line and sliding into the shooting lanes and blocking it with your body…………..A block shot is not just standing in front of the net or crease and letting the puck hit you………..They have to do something else to make it more simple,,,,,,If the Rangers Can block 35 shots Why can’t we do the same…………..we got big dmen……….We are shooting the pucks from every where and alot of them just hit a ranger player.
