GDT: Leafs/Sens – Familiar Foes and Woes

Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs will play host to the Ottawa Senators at the ACC in a game that could be a nail biter for all the wrong reasons. For fans who are looking for a tight game, the Leafs have provided endless periods of “so close!” The Senators? They seem to be running down a similar path, despite blowing out two of their opponents last week with five goals for in each game (vs. Panthers and Coyotes). Unfortunately, they are coming off a shutout loss to the Bruins (surprise) and if they had not put up 10 goals in two games last week, their goals for totals (26) would tell the true tale of two cities who simply cannot score.

“We have to expect bigger things offensively,” Senators coach Cory Clouston said. “We’ve had some guys chip in offensively, but tension will be on the main guys. We need other guys to start scoring. They have to help out. There’s definitely room for improvement, but it will be a process.”

If you replaced Cory Clouston and Senators from that quote with Leafs and Ron Wilson, it would be the same answer to the same questions. The fact is, similar stats run for both clubs. The Leafs have Phil Kessel (7 goals) and Clarke MacArthur (6) doing all the work when it comes to the score sheet. For the Senators, it’s Daniel Alfredsson (6) and Milan Michalek (4).

Then we move down the depth chart a bit, and the Senators have a bit more luck with the puck as Alex Kovalev (3), Mike Fisher (3), Erik Karlsson (2), Ryan Shannon (2), and Chris Kelly (2) have found the back of the net a few times so they recognize what a goal tastes like. That’s alright though, because the Leafs secondary scorers are sure to out-duel the “sometimes but not really” deadly offensive Senators. The incredible speed and soft hands of dangler Tim Brent will get the Leafs past their slump, as will the power forward scoring dynamo, Colton Orr, who runs over (literally) anyone who gets in his way. He’s going for gold!

With all that said, there is one stat the Leafs can be proud of this year, and it would make Cory Clouston’s quote mean that much more for the Senators if they could even come close to matching it (the Leafs goaltending this year), but they can’t.

Robin Lehnar has come in to relieve his goaltending partners twice this year (played the last five minutes against the Canadiens on October 16, and the final half of the October 18 match-up against the Pittsburgh Penguins), stopping all ten shots he has faced in just over 34 minutes of ice-time. The other two? Well… Pascal Leclaire has appeared in four games this season, posting an acceptable 0.903 save percentage and a 3.24 goals against average. He is the better of the two, yet posts a 0-3-1 record.

Insert the savior – Brian Elliot. He is expected to get the start tonight, and he will hit the ice with a 0.894 save percentage and a 3.39 goals against average. His numbers are weaker than Pascal Leclaire (who is now back to the ice after being on the shelf with a groin injury), yet he has a record of 4-4-0.

Toronto, on the other hand, has been nothing short of solid in net. Despite the few mistakes Jonas Gustavsson (0.921 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average) and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (0.909 save percentage and 2.27 goals against average) have made here and there this season, neither has cost the Leafs a victory. Every goaltender in the league has shots they wish they had a second chance on, but mistakes happen – as per human error – and the game goes on. Toronto has had more bailouts this year than Lindsay Lohan.

The Positive:

Toronto has better goaltending.

The Negative:

Toronto has not scored in over 122 minutes.

The Conclusion:

The Leafs could make Elliot look like a God in net.

Although:

The Senators could make the Leafs look like a playoff team again.

It’s not as if they aren’t trying though, and tonight both teams will try to make an example of the other. Ron Wilson has been looking for ways to improve his lines from within the organization, and the Senators are just hoping the on-again off-again talent of Jason Spezza and Alex Kovalev show up tonight.

The Leafs have found a new piece to their puzzle with the addition of Luca Caputi to the top line. He is expected to park himself in front of the Senators net tonight, take the abuse and generate more scoring opportunities. This is a great decision – if the pucks would get past the two or three other players looking to block more Leafs shots. According to the Toronto Star, Caputi has been studying tapes of Tomas Holmstrom. If he can be even half the net presence that man is, the Leafs win this experiment hands down.

The action gets underway tonight at 7:00 EST. I will be liveblogging the event on The Checking Line.com so be sure to join in on the discussion.

Well we are now a .500 hockey team. Do we deserve to be ? Yes and No . Yes because we are not playing a full 60 mins ,no because we meet a couple of really hot goal tenders. Full credit to the players we probably deserved to win at least 3 of the games we lost but thats hockey. If we continue on this pace we will have 82 points for the year. That’s better than last year and most likely will have us fighting for playoff spot. Its time for all of us to get behind this team ,me more than anyone else. This is a far superior team than what we had last year and deserve better than what I have been giving then credit for.

@ Stanley goes to White Kessel:
Torres hits regularily, the goals are a bonus even. We could definately use another guy like that in the bottom six, in place of Sjostrom IMO.
My judgment of last night’s game is simple: too many players peeling off instead of simply finishing their checks.
OTT is a terrible team, very surprising how poor they play. We let them off the hook by playing them soft.

Fellas, when Kadri gets called up after the Marlies road trip he needs to be placed on the WING – where there is less defensive responsibility.
    .
    MacArthur-Bozak-Kessel
    Kulemin/Versteeg-Grabo-KADRI
    Caputi-Brenty-Versteeg/Kulemin
    .
He needs to placed on a different line then Phil to spread out the threat, that way other clubs dont have to shut down just one line!

While I wouldn’t bench Bozak just yet, I couldn’t agree with your second paragraph more. I strongly felt the refs tried to manage the game, especially after the goal that was taken back because of McCreary’s awful positioning. After that, they just handed Ottawa bogus phantom calls (Caputi, and then the high stick, not sure who got it). It was pretty bad actually. They didn’t deserve any of their goals, and we outplayed them all night long. I think the team is coming out of a slump now though, and they need cheerleaders, not critics right now….

Yep, 500 for most of the year is exactly what we want. We finished October 5-4-1. If we finish every month one game above 500, we’re in good position to challenge for a playoff spot. The wins will come again.

    @ Cameron:

Ya know something Cameron. I fell into a bit of a trap when I became a member of MLHS this year. I haven’t really followed hockey at all for the last 10-15 yrs due to work and other things. Its only since I retired last yr that I came back to following the Leafs full time. Like too many others I got caught up in all the hoopla the first few games and fell into becoming very critical when things don’t go right. Thats typical of all fans but Toronto fans even more. This is not a bad hockey team and I fully suppport what Burke is trying to do. We “WILL” have a much better hockey team when this year is said and done and the future look bright for the first time in a lot of years. Stay the course and support what Burke is doing and even more so support the team in any way we can.

Kadri needs a chance with Kessel to get bour scoring going. Even if its just one game like last year and Bozak

Kadri isn’t coming up, barring injury. The Marlies are on a long road trip now, and I doubt they’ll pick him off half-way through.

our lack of a true number one centre is our most glaring weakness. add that, and a good power forward and we are a good hockey team. until then, we will be lucky to be a .500 club.

every centre should be bumped down a line. bozak – no. 2., grabs – no. 3, brent/hanson – no. 4. add richards as our no. 1 and we are suddenly quite formidable down the middle.

LEAFS SUCK! I’m getting tired of this. I don’t mind losing at all. It’s been a while now anyways. But yesterday’s game was the same pattern than last year. It was brutal. They did shit for the first 40 and then they start playing in the third. TOO LATE. I actually told my girlfriend yesterday, I hope they are losing. They seriously need more change. And now that Phaneuf is injured, watch out. Here come Komisarek! OUCH. It’s gonna be a long season.

This is true, but with every game it becomes more clear that Grabovski is about to break out. He was just dominant in the 3rd period tonight, and finally at least got a point. How many posts, crossbars, and just misses can one guy have? Hopefully Washington rolls into town overconfident.

Only problem is that the Leafs are rolling into Washington not the other way around.

My 2 cents…we all knew Bozak was under heavy pressure to carry the #1 job, he hasn’t done it, and Grabbo although the effort is there, hasn’t compensated with line 2 center production. Versteeg as well has been trying to do too much and trying to prove he should be a top 6 when he should just play his game.
    -
Solutions? I think Grabbo will come around, he is getting chances. Same with Versteeg once he settles in. Bozak is a dilemma. It would help him to maybe put him in a 3rd line role for a while and tell him to just play a solid 2 way game to take the pressure off. But bringing Kadri up now is too soon in my opinion. Not too soon from a Leafs team perspective, but too soon for Kadri’s development curve. He needs at least 20 games with the Marlies to learn the 2 way game and learn the pace necessary to be a pro. The Marlies go on a 10 game in 16 day road trip. I say let him do that, then contemplate bringing him up if the Leafs haven’t found their scoring touch.
    -
We are so close to being playoff bound, just lack that finish and lacking that extra one or two skilled forwards with size who can support Kessel’s production. ie: 2 more larger MacArthurs who between the 3 of them although inconsistant in the past, as a group can provide secondary scoring. Hopefully Kulemin can be one of them. I still say grab Guerin if the price is right. Veteran experience, size, and pp finish.

    @ Loric:
That Penalty shot was not Komi fault yes he trip him going in but it was Kaberle at the blueline that lost control of the puck…….Kaberle for one last night look pretty nervous with the puck. And Gunner made allot of mistakes……….If Dion is out for a long time who should be brought up to play his spot………I think Aulie would look good in a leaf uni tonight……
