GDT: Leafs/Sens – Familiar Foes and Woes

Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs will play host to the Ottawa Senators at the ACC in a game that could be a nail biter for all the wrong reasons. For fans who are looking for a tight game, the Leafs have provided endless periods of “so close!” The Senators? They seem to be running down a similar path, despite blowing out two of their opponents last week with five goals for in each game (vs. Panthers and Coyotes). Unfortunately, they are coming off a shutout loss to the Bruins (surprise) and if they had not put up 10 goals in two games last week, their goals for totals (26) would tell the true tale of two cities who simply cannot score.

“We have to expect bigger things offensively,” Senators coach Cory Clouston said. “We’ve had some guys chip in offensively, but tension will be on the main guys. We need other guys to start scoring. They have to help out. There’s definitely room for improvement, but it will be a process.”

If you replaced Cory Clouston and Senators from that quote with Leafs and Ron Wilson, it would be the same answer to the same questions. The fact is, similar stats run for both clubs. The Leafs have Phil Kessel (7 goals) and Clarke MacArthur (6) doing all the work when it comes to the score sheet. For the Senators, it’s Daniel Alfredsson (6) and Milan Michalek (4).

Then we move down the depth chart a bit, and the Senators have a bit more luck with the puck as Alex Kovalev (3), Mike Fisher (3), Erik Karlsson (2), Ryan Shannon (2), and Chris Kelly (2) have found the back of the net a few times so they recognize what a goal tastes like. That’s alright though, because the Leafs secondary scorers are sure to out-duel the “sometimes but not really” deadly offensive Senators. The incredible speed and soft hands of dangler Tim Brent will get the Leafs past their slump, as will the power forward scoring dynamo, Colton Orr, who runs over (literally) anyone who gets in his way. He’s going for gold!

With all that said, there is one stat the Leafs can be proud of this year, and it would make Cory Clouston’s quote mean that much more for the Senators if they could even come close to matching it (the Leafs goaltending this year), but they can’t.

Robin Lehnar has come in to relieve his goaltending partners twice this year (played the last five minutes against the Canadiens on October 16, and the final half of the October 18 match-up against the Pittsburgh Penguins), stopping all ten shots he has faced in just over 34 minutes of ice-time. The other two? Well… Pascal Leclaire has appeared in four games this season, posting an acceptable 0.903 save percentage and a 3.24 goals against average. He is the better of the two, yet posts a 0-3-1 record.

Insert the savior – Brian Elliot. He is expected to get the start tonight, and he will hit the ice with a 0.894 save percentage and a 3.39 goals against average. His numbers are weaker than Pascal Leclaire (who is now back to the ice after being on the shelf with a groin injury), yet he has a record of 4-4-0.

Toronto, on the other hand, has been nothing short of solid in net. Despite the few mistakes Jonas Gustavsson (0.921 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average) and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (0.909 save percentage and 2.27 goals against average) have made here and there this season, neither has cost the Leafs a victory. Every goaltender in the league has shots they wish they had a second chance on, but mistakes happen – as per human error – and the game goes on. Toronto has had more bailouts this year than Lindsay Lohan.

The Positive:

Toronto has better goaltending.

The Negative:

Toronto has not scored in over 122 minutes.

The Conclusion:

The Leafs could make Elliot look like a God in net.

Although:

The Senators could make the Leafs look like a playoff team again.

It’s not as if they aren’t trying though, and tonight both teams will try to make an example of the other. Ron Wilson has been looking for ways to improve his lines from within the organization, and the Senators are just hoping the on-again off-again talent of Jason Spezza and Alex Kovalev show up tonight.

The Leafs have found a new piece to their puzzle with the addition of Luca Caputi to the top line. He is expected to park himself in front of the Senators net tonight, take the abuse and generate more scoring opportunities. This is a great decision – if the pucks would get past the two or three other players looking to block more Leafs shots. According to the Toronto Star, Caputi has been studying tapes of Tomas Holmstrom. If he can be even half the net presence that man is, the Leafs win this experiment hands down.

The action gets underway tonight at 7:00 EST. I will be liveblogging the event on The Checking Line.com so be sure to join in on the discussion.

Kadri should get called up. If not for anything else, it should take the attn off the other guys. The media and all will be focused on him and maybe the boys can feed off his energy for a bit. Something needs to be shaken up and the trade route has officially dried up……we would look desperate and in the perfect situation to over pay. The best time to invest is in a bad market….the best time to trade is when things are going well, or at least reasonablly well. If BB picks up the phone today….there will be 29 GMS saying ” need goals hey Burkie? Well, I have this band aid solution for you ” We DO NOT want more bandaides. If you are worried about the pressure this call up would put on Kadri….please give your head a shake…nothing rattles him. He is a cocky son of a bitch. And oooozes confidence….there aint a person on the planet that can knock him down a level. BURKIE……………call up Naz……deflect the attn….and you may just be surprised.

we need more talent plain and simple….

kulemin is a 3rd line guy, versteeg is a 2nd or 3rd, definitly not a 1st line guy, grabbo isnt a 2nd line centre, bozak isnt a 1st line centre,

our only real topline guy is kessel, and it shows

I’m not as concerned with a cut, the underlying damage is my concern, hopefully its not a tendon or he didn’t tear something with the injury.

    @ Tim:

yea if those guys could actually score some goals we would be more than okay, but they arent, none of those guys are goal scorers.

kulemin is a good hardworking checker, and plays defensively well, but hes never been a goal scorer, ideally i would have him and versteeg on the 3rd line. grabovski altho he plays really hard, he just doesnt have the skill to cut it. if he bulked up to 200lbs, i wouldnt mind him being our 3rd line centre.

bozak should be our 2nd line centre

if you really look at how our lineup should be theres a ton of question marks

    ? – ? – Kessel
    ? – Bozak – MacArthur
    Kulemin – Hanson – Versteeg
    Brown – ? – Orr

i think Mac is the real deal for a 2nd line winger, and Hanson will move up to be a bonafide 3rd line centre.

if you filled in those question marks with legit players, you could be finally talkin about a team that can compete

Somewhat lost in Burke’s comments last night was his criticism of Tyler Bozak. When @simmonssteve told Bozak about it, he looked hurt.

So we’re getting updates on player injuries from their chickies on twitter. Man oh man. Things sure do change.

Injuries are also opportunities. Komi needs to step up while Dion is down. I think he has it in him and has been showing steady improvement but ice time is limiting it. This is it now Mike. Step it up!!! Knock around a few bodies. This D is susposed to be throwing fear into teams? Not really seeing too much of that. Not as glaring as goal scoring but the D can still tighten up.

    @ Penthouse:

I’m not to sure we need that many guy’s, we do have Kadri and if (IF) he can play a top six role, then realistically we’d only need a top line center and a young power forward with finish. So for argument sake lets just say a Richards (which I’m not that sure about him) and a Backes. I think we would look pretty good.
    Kulemin/ Richards/ Kessel
    MacArthur/Bozak/Backes
    Vesteeg/Grabo/Armie

Theses lines can be flipped around somewhat and they all have some punch.
Then the fourth line as a shutdown unit. We can obviously fill the voids as needed. But the options are much more viable. If Kadri steps into the top six next year, then we have a dilemma of who to drop to the third, maybe Kulemin or Mac. But with two good players I think we become a lot better with more options, of course these guys I named are hypothetical, as an example.

    @ Tim:

yea after my remembering army, we realistically need two top line guys to be legit, one of them could be Kadri, but i think it will be more than one season til hes ready to be a topline player in the nhl. so if you wanna look at the situation from the most optomistic perspective possible, our line up to be a competitive team looks like

    Kadri – ? – Kessel
    Versteeg – Bozak – MacArthur
    Kulemin – Hanson – Armstrong
    Brown – ? – Orr

this whole situation tho relies on the fact that kadri will be ready next season and hanson can step up to the 3 hole…and that versteeg steps up from a 20 goal 3rd line guy to a 25 goal 2nd like guy. Then we’d just need that topline centre, which i rather have Backes for then Richards, or even Carter from philly, we need atleast one guy with size on the topline, so my vote would be for Backes

    as for @ LeafsRyan.:

i think MacArthur is legit, he battles hard down low along the boards, hes got finish, and last year i believe he scored 17 with predominately 3rd line minutes, some guys just need the oppurtunity. I think the guy is definitly good for 20-25 goals and hes aggressive and hardworking.

    @ Irishfanman:
Need a first line centre in order to demote Bozak to 3rd line, but that would be ideal. He wins faceoffs and can be 3 zone player, and he’ll eventually add some points to his game. Brent can centre the 4th line.
    brainstorming:
    - Caputi can stay on the top line with Versteeg at centre and Kessel on the wing, but he MUST start finishing his checks.
    - Grabovsi is alright as the 2nd pivot for me right now with his normal mates.
    - Hanson’s the big power winger for the 3rd line then. Sjostrom ‘s been meh, despite skating fast and finishing his checks he’s still scared out there and has hands like . Leave him there until Army returns I guess.
    .
Versteeg and MacArthur could cut out the drop passes at the blue line but otherwise let them continue to try to be creative out there. Perhaps that assist Kris had last night on a quick pass out to Grabovski will remind him of what makes him successful.

I don’t think thats really optimistic, it is going to be hard to land a few guys but realistically we could add some decent talent either during the season or via free agency, imo this team is not bad, just lacks some finish and maybe the bodies we mentioned. If some guys can buy a goal where in decent shape. If you look at the last three games we should of won at least 2 of the 3. It sucks we didn’t but shit happens.

I’m not sure how but I hope that we can land him. I hope the report of him being unhappy are true, realistically I don’t think St. Louis moves him and if they do not till the deadline. Free agency is another cup of tea though, and BB is good at doing his job.
