Leafs Show Fight, Earn Point in Comeback

In what was nearly an improbable comeback victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs against the high powered Washington Capitals, the Leafs did manage to gain a valuable point while showing a ton of intestinal fortitude.  Possibly more importantly they got key contributions from three or four forwards that have been missing in action for most of the season thus far.  Scoring big, timely goals on the night were some prominent members of the 2010/11 “where have you been” class as Nik Kulemin, Kris Versteeg and Tyler Bozak all had big tallies on the night.

Playing their first game without captain Dion Phaneuf the Leafs played an excellent third period and battled hard after a relatively weak first two periods in a pretty moribund atmosphere in Washington – seriously, they barely made a peep during a spirited and lengthy bout between Colton Orr and DJ King.  Something obviously clicked when the Leafs took to the ice in the final period and they managed to get a valuable point in a game they probably should have lost outright after falling behind 3-1 midway through a rough second period.

The much maligned duo of Versteeg and Bozak had especially huge goals in the third period back to back as the Leafs managed to get themselves back into a hockey game that looked pretty hopeless after forty minutes of play.  Even John Mitchell had a few key shifts and was basically the catalyst on the Tomas Kaberle third period goal that made the game 3-2 early in the period – giving the Leafs a bit of life.

The aforementioned (and snake bitten) Versteeg scored on a breakaway to tie the game and Bozak batted one home on the power play to give the Leafs a 4-3 lead.  The Capitals tied the game on their own power play after a pretty weak cross-checking call against Brett Lebda as Alex Semin notched his 7th goal of the season and the game headed to overtime.

The Leafs were given a penalty early into the extra period and Tim Brent had a heroic shot block in the overtime period as the Leafs killed off a 4-on-3 power play, I don’t use the term heroic often in sports, but it is appropriate in this situation as Brent literally took a grenade to the shins in the form of an Alex Ovechkin slap shot and prevented it from getting to the net as the game headed to a shootout.

This was the first shootout on the season for the Leafs and an area they need to improve upon for any chance at a playoff berth.  Nik Backstrom and Phil Kessel were each foiled on their attempts in the first round.  Alex Ovechkin (28% on his career) put his home while Nik Kulemin was stymied on the second round of shooters and Alex Semin ended the game with a slap shot effort as the Leafs were on the losing end of an exciting 5-4 final.

Jonas Gustavsson had a very nice performance on the night and made a few key saves for the Leafs, he was even named Pierre Maguire’s “Monster Performer” of the game, ironically enough.  If the Leafs can continue to get these kind of much needed performances from the likes of Versteeg, Kulemin, Bozak and Gustavsson it would go a very long way in showing the fans there is still reason to be optimistic about this season, and beyond.

Even on a night the team lost, scoring four goals in a game with none belonging to Phil Kessel has to be viewed as a positive development.  Hopefully that can continue.

I can’t believe this “no to Richards” stuff. Unreal. He’s a minus player because he is out there in EVERY situation. Kessel don’t hit either but everyone is in love with him. Brad’s a 90 point player, Conn Smythe winner, was Tampa’s best player in their cup run, and he is still scoring. Not good enough for this team? Give yer heads a shake. If BB isn’t going to use the draft, he’s the type of player you have to go for…I mean, how many scorers in their early-mid 20′s become available? Not many, unless ya got first round picks or a hundred million to throw around. Most teams draft and develope those guys, not trade for them. Too bad Backes may re-sign in St. Louis. Although his ppg is only Grabolike, he brings so much more to the table. BB removed himself from building through the draft for two seasons and put himself in a position to basically build through free agency or trade. Richards is the best player who MAY be avialable either now or more importantly(hopefully)UFA.

At no point has Burke said he won’t use the draft. In fact, he re-iterated just the other day that he believes in keeping first round picks, but that Kessel was too tempting not to just go for it. He intends to keep future picks though. His record also shows that he acquired picks like mad in the past two drafts, trading down, and trading picks from future years, and making deadline deals. I don’t know how people can extrapolate the idea that Burke doesn’t believe in building through the draft because he traded three picks away, while adding several more in other rounds.

Go after him, yes. Trade the sun and the moon for him? No. I’d rather trade assets for someone who would be harder to sign, like Backes, or keep them until we can afford a truly elite talent (ie. Parise). Even just by making moderate additions and letting time go on, the group we have now is going to improve. Look at what Nashville gets by with. Consider we also have Kadri coming up, and D’Amigo probably a year behind him, both looking like legitimate top six talents.

    @ Cameron:
I was thinking more in terms of FA rather than a trade. Its not likely I know because Dallas will try to trade him if they have trouble getting him to sign. ( get what they can ) I’m not in favour of trading away too many of our prospects. Burkie has worked too hard buliding up the depth we have to trade it all away. BTW here’s an interesting way to find out more about what Jerry D’Amigo is all about.

I am hoping that Star NHLers from the GTA will pull a James BoshWade and come to the Leafs on mass to bring Stanley home. Can you imagine a team with Stamkos, Tavares, Doughty, Nash, Seguin and Chris Stewart.

Why was Caputi benched in the third last night? His work ethic is second to none on the team just has hands of stone.

Anybody else think that losing Phaneuf will be a blessing in disguise??

    - No, not in the sense that he’s off the ice because he’s been mediocre

    But because

    A) He’ll get the chance to step back and watch, figure out his game mentally.
    B) LUKE SCHENN will emerge and Dion can watch how that kid plays.
