Luke Schenn’s Next Contract

Relief, that’s the feeling I get when watching our young and improving defenseman Luke Schenn night in and night out this season.  Oh admit it you were a touch worried as I was that Schenn might not ever reach this day but I think we can all just say it and say it with pride, Luke Schenn is a stud.  Although he was never really that bad for most of last season the fact is Schenn was unfairly judged (as a 20 year old defenseman in his second season) by most Leafs fans.

The overall sentiment in 2009/10 seemed to be that Schenn was a disappointment and perhaps on his way to joining the long list of former Toronto Maple Leafs first round busts.  Well something clicked in the New Year and 2010 has quickly made people remember why Luke Schenn was so highly touted in the first place.  Frankly he has been our best defenseman since the latter stages of last season and in 2010/11 currently leads all Maple Leafs defenseman in plus/minus (+4) and hits (42), is third in blocked shots (18) and has chipped in with three assists.

Schenn, who just recently turned 21 years old has gone from our fifth defenseman on the less frequently used third pairing to a guy coach Ron Wilson plays in all situations and might be his most trusted defenseman overall.  Schenn averaged 16:53 minutes of ice-time in 2009/10 while early into the new season he has played a robust and career high 22:27 minutes per night.

With that said the next step for Brian Burke and the Maple Leafs will be to lock up Schenn to a longer term deal in the off-season.  What type of contract can the bruising and skilful defenseman expect?  I attempted to look at some of the recent deals signed by defenseman taken high in the first round and to find a good comparison for Schenn in terms of similar skill sets, numbers and overall game.

Marc Staal is probably a great place to start when trying to hone in on what exactly what it will take to get Luke Schenn signed long term.  Schenn is two years younger than Staal and the Leafs defenseman was rushed a bit to the NHL (Staal began his career at age 21, Schenn’s current age) but there games are pretty similar and they both possess excellent skill sets and the potential to be excellent shutdown defenders.

Staal, 23, was a training camp holdout this past offseason and the restricted free agent signed a new 5-year deal that will pay Staal $3.975 million per season.  Staal finished second among all Rangers defensemen with 8 goals and 27 points, and he’s raised his goals, assists and points totals in each of the last two seasons after starting with 2 goals and 10 points as a rookie in 2007-08.

He also led all Rangers players with an average ice time of 23:07 per game in 2009-10, and his plus-11 rating was third on the team and first among defensemen.   The 12th pick of the 2005 Entry Draft, Staal has 13 goals, 52 points and a plus-6 rating in 244 games, as well as 2 goals and 4 points in 17 playoff games. He’s missed just two regular-season games in his NHL career, both in his rookie season, and has played in 202 consecutive games.

This seems like an appropriate comparison and the type of new contract that Luke Schenn can expect this coming offseason as he will become a restricted free agent.  We could possibly get a slight home team discount and Schenn seems to enjoy playing in Toronto so a 4 or 5 year deal at approximately 3.7-3.9 million per season should be a fair estimate.

Expect Brian Burke and the Maple Leafs brass to make this their top priority in the summer as the Leafs don’t want to be in a position where another team can offer a well above-market or ridiculous offer sheet to the promising young defenseman – something we have seen involving a Brian Burke led team in the past.

What is  your prediction for Schenn’s next contract?

    I wonder if they would say 2.7 for 3 years knowing that he hasn’t hit his upside yet.

    So guys, I’m sitting here thinking about Luke Schenn. Essentially we traded a high 1st (7th overall), a 2nd, and a 3rd for him. That would be huge for any player, but Cliff made the move to take a young unproven player in Luke for that price. What a great move by the Silver Fox! I don’t believe enough credit is thrown his way for making such a good move. I know he hasn’t made all of the best moves, but that is one that will go down as a great move for this franchise.

    @ 2 Minutes for Looking so Guru:
    The draft we got Schenn in was surprisingly deep and we really could not lose in our position. But in the 5th spot getting Schenn was a great move. People can talk about Myers but his offense developed the year after he was drafted and he never showed any potential for offense before that, he could have easily become a Boris Valabik guy or a Hal Gill. Also Bogosian sucks and Pietrangelo is great offensively but crap defensively. Hodgeson is looking like a giant bust as he is crap in the A and has attitude problems apparently. Schenn was a solid move.

    Hodgson has 5 goals 2 assists in his last 5 games. HE IS HEATING UP. Im just saying. Honestly I hate the Canucks more than any other team in the NHL. And I hope Hodgson is a bust. I was just stating the facts.

    As much as I hate saying it I think Hodgson is going to light it up if he can keep his back under control. Theres no one I hate more then the Canucks (well maybe Sens and Habs) but regardless, taking Schenn was never a bad move, it was the safer pick at the time.

    @Cameron & kaz:

    Regarding Grabo:

    I think for this year & last year, he’s definitely been pretty much a pure playmaker. In his rookie year however, I seem to remember him as alot more of a shoot first, pass second guy (not to say he was always a puck hog in his rookie year, but sometimes he was) from what I remember of watching him quite a bit in 08-09. In other words, I think he made a slight overhaul to his offensive style from his rookie year to last year and that new variation is still being exhibited this year.

    This does not really justify or excuse (at least, not completely) the fact that he’s scoring less from last year to so far this year because his shot is far from useless. Also, even in his rookie year in which he lit the lamp 20 times, he still suffered the long goalless droughts then as well and scored a lot of his 20 goals in bunches during hot streaks. So obviously, the biggest reason why he’s not scoring as much is his own historical streakiness + luck (obviously bad luck) as well.

    @ phenomeNAZ:
    I was just poking fun bro no worries, Hodgson in my opinion is a bust because he was always sold as an intelligent 2way player with great offensive upside. I have watched every Moose game and he has looked like shit 90% of the time and he really looks out of place (Though Shreider does too but he is Kadir’s age). Kadri has been poor in his play but he has been great some games, I expect it as a young guy with extreme offensive potential but not the best grasp of the game but Hodgson has too much hype for what he will be a 2 A center.

    @ kaz:
    Play Grabo with Orr and Brown and watch what happen’s to his point production. I don’t think that prove’s anything. Even if you want to say he’s a pass-first guy, he still has only 6 point’s(should have only 5 but that’s whatever) compared to Kulemin’s 8 and Macarthur’s 10. And he has taken the 3rd most shot’s out of all forward’s(Macarthur and Kessel are ahead of him). He’s extremely snake bitten, yes. But 10 goal’s in 71 game’s and on 149 shot’s is not good. He does need to score more. I’m sorry 71 games 10 goals and 31 assist’s isn’t exactly impressive. He has worked on other part’s of his game though. So as not to be a liability, which is good. His work in the face-off circle and in the defensive zone is greatly appreciated.
    .
    @Cameron
    You know I respect you. But I dissagree Grabo is paid to do both score goal’s and create play’s. He is doing one but not the other. And unfortunately when we’re losing game’s by 1 goal and your 2nd line center has 0 in 12 game’s that is cause for concern.
    .
    We do both agree he is extremely streaky, though
    .
    Also Joe Thornton get’s a ton of assist’s and make’s guy like Jonathan Cheechoo score 56 goal’s. I liked Cheechoo but if it wasn’t for Thornton he maybe got 25. And I would hardly say scoring 20 goal’s for 10 straight year’s is struggling to score 20. Joe truly is a pass first guy(he take’s less shot’s than Grabo, and score’s more I might add) but I would say he struggles to score 30(which he has done twice) than something he does every year which is score 20.
    .
    Note: I’m not at all angry, if I came off that way I’m sorry. I just want to see a little more out of Grabo especially when the team is struggling to score goals and he is one of the few that has scored 20 in this league.

    Anyway’s in more interesting new’s. The Portland Winterhawk’s are coming to Saskatoon next Friday and I’m really excited to get to see Leaf’s prospect Brad Ross in person. Along with Nino(Note: this guy owe’s me some thank you’s after getting his name in the media at last year’s world junior’s, or maybe I owe him a thank you for not making me look dumb) and Ryan Johansen go up against the leaf’s other WHL prospect Josh Nicholl’s and the Blade’s. It hasn’t been very often that we get too see two top 5 team’s in the CHL play in Saskatoon. In fact I don’t even reme,ber the last time that happened. Probably the Memorial Cup in 1989( I was 7 turning 8 but watched every game).
    .
    Also(not that this wasn’t enough) Shannon Tweed and Gene Simmon’s are dropping the puck at the game. Which is both ridiculous and awesome. It’s my goal to get a photo with Gene, Shannon, Brad Ross, and Josh Nicholls in my Leaf Jersey. Even though I really don’t like Gene Simmon’s you don’t get that kind of an oppurtunity every day.
