Phaneuf Injury Limits Options

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue its downward spiral to the National Hockey League basement after a frustrating loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight—not to mention increasing the likelihood that they may relinquish another top-five draft pick to the Boston Bruins.

No, I’m not heading to the nearest bunker yelling that the sky is falling (although I may just welcome the idea) but after losing six-straight games, it’s time to at least be concerned. And I don’t care about the four-game winning streak because clearly the Leafs were playing above its capabilities. To be fair, the goaltending and defense have upgraded considerably compared to previous seasons, but the offense has been downright abysmal.

It’s quite scary observing the ineptitude of the Leafs’ forward ranks with Phil Kessel on a scoring drought. I mean, how many times do we have to listen to Joe Bowen and Greg Millen discuss how the Leafs “have had their chances, but can’t find any luck”? It has nothing to do with luck. The fact of the matter is that the Leafs lack the skill required to be a consistent threat on the scoresheet. And it is, in fact, killing their chances at reaching the post-season for the first time since the lockout.

The real conundrum is that general manager Brian Burke has little options to bolster the offense. With captain Dion Phaneuf out for at least another three weeks, the Leafs simply can’t afford to relinquish one of its top-four defensemen in a trade. Moreover, the only defenseman that may garner a decent return is Francois Beauchemin (Mike Komisarek‘s $4.5 million contract is too much for a defensive defenseman and Luke Schenn is surely an untouchable) and considering he leads the Leafs with a TOI/G of 24:31, it’s unlikely he’s used as trade bait.

It’s been suggested that Nazem Kadri should be thrown into the mix, but considering he struggled with the expectations bestowed upon him in training camp, it’s unfair to place that kind of pressure on his shoulders. If the Leafs want another legitimate top-six forward, perhaps it’s best to let Kadri develop in the American Hockey League instead of exposing him to such mediocrity.

Unless Burke is willing to change his stance and acquire some outside help through free agency (which wouldn’t solve the scoring issue), the Leafs will likely stand pat and hope its squad can rekindle the magic from the beginning of the season. But, with the Leafs now under the .500 mark, the team isn’t exactly underwhelming analysts.

On the bright side, at least the team is not in utter shambles with a competent defense and goaltending tandem. While it is premature to criticize Burke while he is clearly in the early stages of fast-tracking the Leafs to respectability (especially in the early-going of the season), it’s hard not to get frustrated considering mediocrity is familiar territory for Leafs fans.

Unless Burke is willing to do something drastic, as in relinquishing more draft picks (for the love of God, no), Leafs fans will have to sit tight. And that could mean another season counting the days until July 1.

You stay classy, MLHS.

Dallas will resign Richards for sure. No way they let him go. They have a contending team with their wingers and group of centers. They will get rid of Ribeiro before Richards.

It’s more what Brad wants than Dallas. Maybe he’s tired of the lame hockey market and wants to come home to Canada and do something special. Everybody knows that success in Toronto = mad skrilla and god-like status.

That 5 on 3 in the first period was absolutely brutal. Yes, the Leaf penalty kill has improved this year, they killed that two man advantage perfectly…for Tampa. No movement, just ringing passes around the perimeter. About half-way through there was a perfect pass made to a winger at the top of the faceoff circle with two men in front…and no shot. Instead, back to the point man and 5-6 more passes around the perimeter. I realize there may have been a defender in the shooting lane, but that is why you move around. The 5 Leafs looked like pylons , no foot movement at all. Stamkos showed how it is done properly on the first Tampa powerplay, he was covered in the faceoff circle to the side of Giguere, but then faded back out of coverage and got a perfect feed for a one-timer, and that was basically the game…all momentum shifted to Tampa at that point. I can’t truthfully say where the blame lies for this complete lack of imagination on the power play, but I do know the only constant in the past three seasons of watching the same routine over and over is Wilson and his staff. True, they can’t shoot the puck or move their damn feet or drive to the net , but if they are delivering a different message to the players, it isn’t being received. Totally frustrating, I did not even watch the third period.

I would honestly take a shot at Riberio if we have to. Maybe he will get Kessel going

I think we move out Brent and Mitchell and do the following:
    Rosehill Bozak Kessel
    MacArthur Grabovski Kulemin
    Sjostrom Versteeg Caputi
    Brown Hanson Orr
And then ask these lines to grind out every game. To Camerons point. If Bozak goes into the corner for a puck we all know Rosehill will go in with him and out comes the puck in our possession. Kessel can then do what he does best, get to a trigger point.

only there would be a man or two on kessel since the other teams know that nobody else on that line has any finish

    @ IBleaf:
Bozak will not earn 3.7 million this year…2.8 million of that is bonus money which at this point seems highly unlikely to be achieved completely. He signed here because the Leafs gave him max bonus potential and the best chance to earn it by not having an established #1 centre in place.

It is easy to start picking on certain players and we have seen with Phaneuf, Bozak, Versteeg and Grabovski this year. The real issue is the Leafs just don’t have any fire power outside of Kessel. The word is out in the NHL, shut down Kessel and MacArthur and the Leafs are done. We will see BB do something shortly but it will not remedy the problem. This will be a season long issue with this team. We can only hope that the Leafs can grind out some wins and come close to a playoff position.

For the time being, BB should consider injecting some physicality into the lineup. Call up Rosehill, Boyce, Irwin and Aulie. Some big bodies for 2-3 games and sit some guys having issues Versteeg, Mitchell etc. At least the opposing team will not have as much room to free wheel.

There won’t be much bonus money after this year once it counts against the cap. Teams won’t give any at all. They shouldn’t anyway, its beyond stupid. Man up and play hard for 3 years then cash in big time IMO. That’s what the rest of the world does at work. You don’t just walk in and make more then everyone else

OKay I have been trying not to vent about last nights game but I AM PISSED! WTF are you thinking RW? I had been on his side up until last night I mean really why the hell is Mitchell on the top line? There is no excuse for it I thought Caputi was having a decent game unlike most of the forward crew that just rolled over (except the Grabo line) . You cant tell me Grabo’s line see’s Mitchel go to the front line and not take it as a slap to the face. And once the game was out of reach explain why RW in his infinite wisdom didnt start playing the bottom six more to try and rest the boys for tonight? And I guess it makes sense the Lebda and Mitchell both played more then 17 mins? When Holzer and Caputi played WAY less, but you just keep diggin a ditch RW tool… And I was on his side, I was saying well they arent playing his system and not finishing checks but when your make lines like he does its no wonder. I guess I should end this rant…
