GDT: Leafs/Panthers – The Backlash

MLHS Update: Richard Peddie is out as MLSE President/CEO according to Greg Brady. Given the state of MLSE’s three sports teams at the moment, this can’t come off as a major surprise.

The Toronto Maple Leafs complete their back to back Sunshine State games tonight as they visit the Florida Panthers, but there are issues starting to arise in the dressing room. During their 4-0 shutout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, I thought I would eventually see J.S. Giguere pull a Patrick Roy and start throwing the puck in his own net before demanding a trade from a Toronto team that does not seem to have any idea how to score a goal. Instead, he saved his frustrations for after the game when he called out his teammates for being lazy.

“This is a young group; we should have energy every game,” said Giguere. “We shouldn’t be tired. We have lots of days off. If you’re tired, you’ve got to rethink what you’re doing, because this is unacceptable.”

Unacceptable is an understatement as the Leafs try to avoid their seventh straight loss tonight. In a similar fashion, the Leafs powerplay has gone from decent to bad and Giguere did not hesitate from criticizing the Leafs lack of generated opportunities with the man-advantage.

“We had a big opportunity at the beginning of the game, a 5-on-3,” said Giguere. “When you get those chances at the beginning of the game, you’ve got to bury one, you’ve got to score. You’ve got to get something going.”

It’s been perhaps the most frustrating part of the Leafs game for me personally. During the 5 on 3 last night, Tomas Kaberle and Francois Beauchemin spent the duration of the powerplay passing the puck back and forth, not opening any shooting lanes and neither getting set up for the shot. Once that system failed, Ron Wilson turned his attention to the Versteeg-On-The-Point project, which has been horrendous.

Versteeg’s inability to utilize his teammates on most of his plays makes it easier for the opposition to converge on him at the side boards before forcing the puck out of their zone. While Versteeg shows flashes of talent, his shooting accuracy has not led to any positives on the offensive. In many ways, Versteeg is this year’s Lee Stempniak.

Aside from their second line of Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur and Nikolai Kulemin – which also needs to continue to produce – the team seems to lack an overall chemistry. This needs to be accountable on behalf of the coach. I am not blaming the Leafs lack of success on Ron Wilson, but he needs to find a way to get these players gelling, and right now we’re not seeing it.

Ron Wilson is an intelligent coach. In the second period of last night’s game, he had the Leafs focusing on short and quick passes in order to break down the Lightning’s trap system. It worked and generated a few scoring chances, but after a few shifts, the Leafs resorted to the long stretch passes through the neutral zone that, ultimately, were picked off and lead to quite a few odd man rushes for the opposition.

If the Leafs want any chance of winning tonight against a Panthers team that wants to make an example of them on the ice after losing their “coach’s challenge” in the general manager’s meetings, they’ll need to buy into Ron Wilson’s system. It’s not about two or three players breaking out of their slump, it’s about the team as a whole playing as a unit and working for their chances – never giving up on the play.

Tomas Vokoun is expected to get the nod in goal for Florida tonight, while Gustavsson will likely make his appearance tonight in the back to back outings.

The problem is BB hasn’t given RW anything to work with. I agree that these guys should be in the AHL, the thing is, most rebuilding teams keep their top players while letting developing players develope in the minors. We might as well call up the whole Marlies team if we send those guys down. We no longer have the Atropov’s, Poni’s, Stajan’s, Hagman’s, Steen’s, Kubina’s to plug the hole while we wait for these young guys to show any kind of promise. Not only that, because of BB’s “fast track”, we are set back at least 2 years because this teams’ absolute suckyness isn’t being rewarded with high draft picks.

Your’re not telling me anything I don’t know about Burke , he has made a lot of bad moves and it could have set us back 2-3 years as an organization. If this team give Boston a lottery pick again this year, we should waive goodbye to the Burke and Wilson era.

Unless Burke can pull off a miracle trade for a 1st line power forward, bring up Rosehill and let him ride shotgun for Bozak and Kessel. Put Kulemin back with Grabovski and MacArthur and drop Versteeg to third line.

    @ TuckerThomas:
No one said we’re cheering for the Habs – last night i wanted to begin my new life as a St. Louis Blues fan.
    .
Throughout the night i had to argue both sides of the leaf story. How they are a young team, how Burke builds from the net out and the offense is the last thing to complement. On the other side of the coin is constant and consistent mortgaging of the future; the management’s constant attempts to put shitty players in roles they cant handle.
    .
Listen, its the right of every true leafs fan to become fed up. What sort of inclination have you been given that this is a great franchise?
    .
Do you know why i used to LOVE LOVE the maple leafs? Because of: Mats Sundin, Gary Roberts, Darcy Tucker, Tie Domie, Cujo, The Eagle.
Who the hell is our superstar now? Who is our Tucker, our Gary Roberts. I bet you’d pick 10 goalies in the NHL instead of Giguere right now.
    .
Point is being a fan is a two-way street. The only reason people are usually fans is from geography. Mafukin geography. Why not pick a team that you believe in, with solid and committed ownership that has a clear direction.
    .
I get you’re ranting. But understand the role of sports in reality – there are hundreds of things going on this world exponentially more important than the outcome of a privatized, profit-based sport.

vegas odds on the Leafs making the playoffs? wont tell because I am literally crying…

@Cameron – give it up dude – there is nothing that Burke can do now to fix this… his mistakes have been made already and we are going to pay the price. Schenn + Kadri + Seguin + Knight + 1st rounder next year + $15M cap space – now we’re talking…

Logging off and heading back to the poker table…

    Cheers boys

By the way Cameron Bozak’s cap hit is 3.75, he makes .850 in actual salary without bonuses , but his cap hit is 3.75. So , yeah that is too much money for a third line center.

The thing about this season, as bad as it has been, is that we have managed to bank 5 wins. Laugh if you want at that, but the fact is, we are two games away from 500. If Burke would get up off his ass and do something, we might be able to stay around 500 until Phaneuf and Armstrong return. Stop the bleeding now, and hope we can start trending in the other direction when healthy. What do you guys think of this:
    -
    To STL: Beauchemin, Mitchell
    To TOR: Berglund
(might be able to get them to toss a 3rd or 4th in here)
    -
To BOS: Mikus, 2nd in 2011
    To TOR: Wheeler
    -
    Wheeler / Berglund / Kessel
    Kulemin / Grabovski / Kadri
    MacArthur / Bozak / Versteeg
    Sjostrom / Hanson / C.Orr
    -
    And of course, fire Wilson.

A big NO to Wheeler… he has 1 or 2 goals this year and is lazy… Thats the last thing we need. St.Louis wouldn’t want Mitchel… Maybe Caputi? I agree with the last part… fire wilson, of coarse.

Let me put it this way.Take the top 5 teams in the league. Would you take one guy off that top line and replace him with Kessel? Maybe, maybe not. If you are a rebuilding team and you’re chances of making the dance are close to zero, do you add him? I’ll tell ya, do ya replace Burrows, Semin, Ryan, Kane, Zetterberg with Kessel on you’re top lone? Not me. Kessel is a second line sniper, 1st unit PP guy, nothing more and a completely ridiculous move by Burke. Same goes for almost every move he has made to date save the JSG trade. This thing lands on Burke IMHO.

    @ Pazuzu:

I really don’t think that the draft picks matter all that much, in all sincerity. Look at the Islanders. Even a 1st overall pick can’t help them. Dozens of teams have drafted in the lottery pick zone for years and years and gotten no where, or are only starting to see limited success now. You have to look at the big picture of those draft pick trades, and also look at all the good things Burke did in the draft over the last two years.
    -
Yes, he traded Seguin, Knight and a 1st for Kessel, but also added Bozak, Gustavsson, Rynnas, Hanson, and Scrivens. He also got extremely lucky with D’Amigo. Were the draft done over tomorrow, he would be a top 10 selection. This year, he was without a 1st round pick, but traded a worthless prospect in Jimmy Hayes for Brad Ross, who is a revelation in the WHL, posting amazing numbers while spending half of every game in the box for fighting – an amazing pick (completely overshadowing Knight, which in my mind, makes that portion of the trade void). Then he trades a 3rd rounder for 2 years from now for one of the CHL’s leading scorers in McKegg. GIven his history, we know he will find a way to replace that 3rd rounder too.
    -
So while there is seemingly no reward for failing, Burke has played the draft masterfully without much to work with. So really, I don’t think we need worry too much about not being able to draft in the first round for one more year. Look at Boston. Their team is built with 2nd round picks (Krejci, Bergeron, Lucic), free agents (Savard, Chara), and trade acquisitions (Horton). We have Kadri, Schenn and Kulemin to build around as our own draft projects, with it looking like we’ll get solid contributiions from our later round picks (something most teams can’t boast).
    -
The real concern for me is potentially being shutout in free agency, again.

Not true. He’s really made an effort this year, but hasn’t seen much reward for his troubles. He’s hitting more. Lots of players appear lazy in certain situations and then bloom elsewhere. We need to get lucky with some of those players. Look at MacArthur. He’s been awesome for us. Also, Berglund isn’t worth that much. They are looking for someone like Beauchemin to anchor their injury ridden D corps, and just be reliable. Mitchell is just a body to fill in. Berglund isn’t worth much more than Beauchemin at this point though. He needs a fresh start, and like with Wheeler, I’d be happy to give him a second chance.

What can they do to change this?
    1) Bring up Kadri (if nothing else he will inject some excitement on the PP)
    2) Axe Wilson, let Dougy Gilmour do the interm for the remainder of the year. If nothing else he will keep the boys alert and playing with a cause. And for God Sake get rid of Acton. Dougy would work good with Tim Hunter up front and bring Jamie Macoun in for the Defence. Do it before the Flames figure it out. Kadri would flourish under Gilmour’s watch. If Hunter wants to go in peace with Ronnie, let Domi add some freshness to the team.
    3) Bring up Rosehill, put in Caputi’s spot to inject more excitement and keep the other team looking for the big hit, Move Brown up to Kessel’s line for the same reason. Send Mitchell to the Marlies for conditioning. Tim Brent back to Jr. A. (works like a dog but lets be serious this is the NHL)

    Brown – Kadri – Kessel
    Kulemin – Grabovski – MacArthur
Rosehill – Bozak – Versteeg (Rosehill stays untill Armstrong returns)
Sjostrom – Hanson – Orr (Sjostrom waived for Rosehill)

It is what it is untill Christmas when someone else realizes they suck too or when Burke can convince Kaberle to move on out.
With the above line-up and Coaching Staff if nothing else we should be more exciting to watch.
And who wouldn’t rather have Domi doing the pre-game presser rather then Napolian. Dougy dresses alot sharper too!
