Marlies Challenge, Mitchell’s Opportunity

On Tuesday it was announced Ryan Hamilton will miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. And so it starts… again.

Devastated by injuries and call-ups last season, the Marlies failed to make the playoffs for only the second time since the AHL club returned to Toronto. 425 man games lost. That equates to a 5.3 players sitting out each and every game of a 80 game season – so let’s say, five and a backup goaltender.

Already this season the Marlies have seen talented forwards Christian Hanson and Luca Caputi get the call up to the show, as well as physical defenceman Korbinian Holzer. Ryan Hamilton joins Simon Gysbers and Danny Richmond in the press box, all suffering from separate ailments. All this is on top of Jay Rosehill, Alex Foster and James Reimer who had already spent time on the day-to-day list.

“Unfortunately Ryan [Hamilton] went down with an injury a few games ago and we’re playing with a couple of the guys out of the lineup who played key roles,” said Dale Mitchell, the Etobicoke native who was drafted by the Leafs in the third round of the 2007 draft.

Hamilton’s injury however has meant Mitchell has drawn into the lineup in a full time role on a line with Captain Alex Foster and Brayden Irwin.

“My job right now is to be a pest and an energy guy out there – to draw penalties, to get under the other team’s skin with driving the net, little things like that, little chirps here and there,” expressed the winger in a telephone conversation before the Marlies game in Glens Falls versus the Phantoms.

Mitchell always had a knack for chirping, his 354 penalties minutes over four and a half years in the OHL can attest to that, but the Marlies energetic agitator has a lot more to offer than just a skilled tongue. Mitchell three times crested the 30 goal plateau in junior, and produced at a rate greater than a point per game in all but his rookie OHL season.

“I was counted on offensively in junior and here we have our offensive guys, but that doesn’t stop me from putting the puck in the net or creating points or offensive chances, it’s just now i’m not as relied on as i was in junior,” expressed Mitchell, who currently has three assists over his six games with the Marlies.

Not many players are gifted with the on-ice gab as well as the scoring touch. Sean Avery, made famous by his antics, has never bettered 39 points in a NHL season.

“In practice i have to do the extra things to maintain those abilities and at the same time also working hard every shift to maybe get that opportunity on the powerplay or the top line,” Mitchell offered when speaking about his unique skill-set, but then added, “one day.”

Mitchell’s ‘one day’ may very well be ‘some day soon.’

With the casualties suffered last season, Marlies fans saw the emergence of Justin Hodgman, an undrafted centre who was deep down in . With a little attention, some conditioning and the proper guidance, Hodgman has blossomed into the team’s top centre on a line with Kadri and D’Amigo, and ranked second on the team in points.

With every challenge comes opportunity. The cliche may be overused, but it doesn’t make it any less true. With three called up and three more injured, the Marlies are indeed faced with a challenge. But with this challenge has come the opportunity for Dale Mitchell.

It’s left up to Dale to decide what he’s going to do with it.

I was looking for an opinion, not being a smartass. I know he isn’t that physical, but wondering if he could take some of Kaberle’s minutes. as a 5 or 6 guy. He can’t be much worse in his own end.@ Cameron:

How was I being a smartass? I’m very confused.
    -
Looks like they just threw the book at Kadri. 2 for slashing, 2 for unsportsmanlike, and 10 and a game for abusing an official.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with how any of our defensemen play in their own end. The problem is our useless forwards who don’t come back and get in good position to receive a pass. It’s not a coincidence that Kaberle looked amazing to start the year when the forwards were flying. You put him with good forwards, and he will excel.

That’s the problem. If we’re going to move out Beauchemin, Grabovski, Giguere and Kaberle this year, we’d be better suited moving them for younger, cheaper players at the deadline. We’d be shooting ourselves in the foot to trade them for older players who are playing worse.

I got a little disrespectful last night towards some who were contemplating on jumping. My apologies. We should leave people be who are at the end of their rope and let them vent. If they are so frustrated that they are questioning their allegiance then they are true fans IMO. It’s the happy go lucky fans that keep telling everyone not to panic that are getting to me now.

Is the NHL running Dallas now, like they were running Phoenix? A team in chapter 11 would be encouraged by the bankruptcy judge to cash in assets and shed deficits to pay out as much as they can on what they owe. And lowering payroll to the floor would make the team more attractive to be sold, so a judge would like that too.

If you look at Carolina’s payroll, it looks like Rutherford is doing the same, cutting as much overhead as possible to enhance chances of a sale. I’d try teams like that for trades.

No matter what they say in Dallas, I think Richards is available for a fistful of cheap decent prospects. Guys still in junior or Europe who don’t even have minor league deals. No draft picks please, Mr Burke. Richard’s deal is a big ticket to dump for a team in chapter 11.

We manage to get it even still. Ponikarovsky turned into Caputi. Antropov turned into Blacker. There are young players struggling on their current teams. Patrik Berglund, Devin Setoguchi, Blake Wheeler – players obviously capable of more, but unable to show it because of depth or what have you.

Fine take childish pot shots at other fans. Some people can be die hard fans and be unhappy. I’ve become indifferent to much of the whining on here and the poor play of the team but I will always watch and hope. I find that personal insults to try and single out people (Andrew R and a few others come to mind) for their opinions is pointless as they won;t change their opinion and you won;t change yours. Lets hire Kevin Dineen and hope for a better show saturday and kick those arrogant douchebag Canucks.

I think of the three of them, Berglund is actually the most available. He continually has coaching staffs all over him in St.Louis, and I think he’s a clear example of someone that needs a fresh slate. Setoguchi isn’t really necessary in San Jose with how stacked they are. Couture is equally capable if not more so of scoring, and Setoguchi doesn’t play as well defensively as any of the other top six guys. Still, we could use some pure offense.

It’s hard to get a read on Setaguchi, he scored a bushel when he played with Big Joe, but I could score 15 playing with Thornton. Do you think Burke would take a chance on Lupol with the Ducks? Seems to me I read a couple of weeks ago that he was cleared from his spine infection to start working out. He’s 4 and change on the cap, we could roll the dice , Kabs if he’ll go, or ship Beauchemin back there, I’m sure Murray still likes him like Burke does.

I wouldn’t give up any significant asset like Kabs or Beauch to land Lupul. The guy hasn’t played hockey in a year, has some serious stuff to work through, and has only just begun working out. It’ll probably take him this whole year just to get back into the swing of things, and he has a huge cap hit to boot. He’s worth less than John Mitchell.
