Canada’s Team Visits Toronto

The Vancouver Canucks are hoping a visit to the ACC won’t do much to halt their recent winning ways.  Other than a brief speedbump against Montreal on Tuesday, Vancouver has been nearly unstoppable, going 7-2-1 in their last ten games.  This makes it a tough assignment for the Leafs, who won’t have an easy time snapping out of a six-game slide against Roberto Luongo and the Canucks.  Toronto will be hoping that recent call-ups Nazem Kadri and Keith Aulie inject some life into their slumbering squad.  Fans will be hoping that management didn’t jump the gun with Kadri, putting him in the limelight at the peak (hopefully…) of Toronto’s struggles.

Really, has the title “Canada’s team” ever been as clearly belonging to one team in recent history?  Not that I’ve ever been a fan of that term (often thrown around by certain media outlets), because it too often gets ugly and complicated due to “geographical envy” (eg. Montreal fans displeasure at national Leafs exposure).  But in the purest sense, Canada’s best NHL team right now is undisputed.  With the rebuilding state of Edmonton and Toronto, the “decent, but not a contender” status of Montreal, and the absolute chaos that is Calgary, Vancouver takes the cake almost by default.

That doesn’t mean they don’t have a wide arsenal of strengths and skills that can put a team down.  Toronto will obviously have to be wary of Vancouver’s skilled players, specifically on the powerplay, as the Canucks shoot a lethal 30% on the man-advantage while on the road.  They will also have to fight hard to gain control of the puck after faceoffs, as Vancouver is one of the handful of teams higher than Toronto when it comes to success in the circle.  If the Leafs can find solace in any statistic, it’s that the Canucks sit in the bottom-half of shots against per game.  If Toronto manages to come out strong and pressure a Canucks squad that hasn’t been as sharp on the road, this will be an exciting, fast-paced game with a ton of hits (both teams sit in the top 10 for that category).   But if the Leafs put forth another disorganized offensive effort, Vancouver will capitalize on the league’s most giveaway-prone club and it won’t be pretty.

Here are some other quick notes and lineups for tonight’s tilt:

-Kadri will have to maintain the effort and attention to detail he has put forth in the AHL recently.  He will be playing on the wing with Bozak and Kulemin, a line that coach Wilson thinks will “show us what he can do offensively with the puck”.  Nazem will have to stay with his game (not try to do too much) to have an impact, although his success at even strength is very much a question mark at this point.  One area in which Leafs fans should see an immediate impact will be on the powerplay, as Kadri has the capacity to move the puck quickly and accurately.  More importantly, the currently anemic man-advantage could use any sort of injection at this point and Kadri should deliver that.  For a closer look at the ramifications of Kadri’s debut and Burke‘s reaction, check out this bit from Ron.

-J.S. Giguere has had a rough time with the Canucks in recent years.  The Leafs goaltender has posted a porous 4.70 GAA and 0.817 SV% in his last three games against the Orcas.  This is an unsightly contrast to Roberto Lungo’s 3-0 mark against Toronto, while sporting a 0.929 SV%.  Thus the home team will be looking to solve Luongo and also fend off Alex Burrows, who has racked up 7 points in his last four games against the Leafs.

-Mikhail Grabovski has found his stride.  After a slow start, the Belarussian pivot has 3 points ( including 2 goals)  in his last 3 games.  For a young team with the players that Toronto has, success will ultimately depend on the consistency of purported impact players.  Nikolai Kulemin and Clarke MacArthur are the only two of Toronto’s scoring forwards that have performed at/near their maximum levels through this first part of the season.  Kessel started strong, and faded of late.  Grabovski has come on hard, but was under-performing early.  Kris Versteeg’s mojo dried up after the preseason, and has yet to be rediscovered.  With the defense and goaltending that have been on display, Toronto will find success with a consistent output on the part of these players.

Slumps are made to be broken, but this is as hard a team to break it on as any.  If Toronto gets a much-needed spark from Kadri and Aulie and emerge victorious over Vancouver, Leafs Nation will let loose a collective sigh of relief.  If the Leafs sink again, especially in the underwhelming, pseudo-apathetic manner in which they have recently, Toronto media headlines will likely make the descent from dramatic criticism to apocalyptic forewarnings.

Oh i see now, yeah i hope Kessel can find a spot on the PP like Stamkos and Ovie have and become our lethal PP player who scores every PP.The thing is I don’t think Kessel has the Slapper that those two guys have,at least I haven’t seen it.Hopefully he has just been hiding it.

I knew what you meant and was going to post but forgot. But yes I saw the same thing, it looked like they told Kessel to get into the slot where he could hit the net and pick his spots. If Kadri stays up I can see Kessel utilizing the area more to his advantage and Kadri looking for him, if to many people focus on Kessel, Bozak will sneak in behind the defenders giving us more options.

Really if anyone on here expected the leafs to come out of the gate and continue to win and not hit a string of games like this should get there head examined, it’s better that the days the leafs pulled this crap at the end of the season when it was make the playoff or bust only to keep everyfan on the edge of there seat the last 15 games wondering only to be disapointed have the losses now allows the team to grow beleive it or not and allows management to tweak what they need to tweak

I was referring to Honest Hockey`s repeated mantra that Bozak would be an immediate and substantial improvement over Stajan.
I agreed…and we were both wrong.Neither look like first liners.
Bozaks clearly suffering this season even though he looked better tonight without the first line pressure and new mates.
And bear in mind,Bozak is 24 and one year away from his peak physical maturity..unlike many rooks.Big difference and often overlooked with college guys.
Shows flashes though, but too soft IMO.
    We need size..period.

I bet you when Burke and Nonis met after the Florida game and decided to bring up Kadri and Aulie Burke told Nonis to start talking to other GM’s about players and their availability like he did with the Phaneuf deal last year because I’m pretty sure he said if Kadri doesn’t help the offense than he would have to turn to plan B and the only plan B I can think of is a trade.

So basically the deal is… Maybe the Kessel deal turns out to help the B’s. We still have Kessel and BB is gonna try his best to get us a first rounder. Kessel is a keeper and he’s finally playing with a Grabo right now who is on a pace for career numbers playing for a team in a scoring slump. Maybe the Versteeg deal wasn’t as lopsided as we thought but we still have Versteeg. A guy who can generate offense like there is no tomorrow. We’re all on him cause he’s missing chance after chance. Well at least he’s getting chance after chance. At some point they are gonna start going in. We aren’t out of it by any means. Go Leafs Go!

Yo Andie….chill man, whats up…lol?? K now you have to answer six questions, be honest (or try) and give a brief reason, no essays just a brief response.
    1) Is this team better than the one that started last year.
    2) Would you rather have Kessel or Seguin?
    3) Of the entire D-core who would you trade, anyone?
    4) How much cap space do we need and for what?
    5) Which free agent would you pursue?
    6) Would you rather have Stalberg or Versteeg?

    @ Uncle Otis:

Alright alright, my bad for attacking you like that, but come on, you can’t really agree with that. Yes, Bozak is at the normal age of maturity; but again, he has less than one season of NHL experience under his belt. Matt Stajan still can’t score, and he’s played with Jarome Iginla, Mats Sundin, and Phil Kessel. I’m not saying Bozak will end up any better, but it’s entirely impossible to say he’s a bust right now, because he’s showed more creativity and skill than Stajan for years.

As for the Leafs needing size; Amen to that lol If the leafs could put together a Christmas wish list it would be as follows:

    Dear Santa,
Please deliver to us a skilled top 6 forward, preferably a centre, who stands larger than 6′ and weighs in at over 200 lbs.
Also, we would love to find a loophole in Tomas Kaberle’s NTC, and for Kris Versteeg to begin playing to his potential.

If we can get that stuff, we’ll be solid haha

Seriously though, we’re in a slide, and it sucks for us as Leafs fans, but at least it points out the holes we have, so we can move forward with the rebuild with the right players.

    @ Tim:
1)This is a better team then the one started last year.We had Black and Toskala last year.Enough said.
2)I have to say I would rather won`t Kessel. He is way ahead in development than Seguin is and still only 22 years of age. Also I remember Kessel being called the American Sidney Crosby in his draft year (can`t remember where) so that has got to be as good as anything Seguin is compared to.
3)I would trade Lebda but I don`t think we get more than a 3rd rounder and that is if he plays well untill the deadline.
4)We need enough cap space to allow us to sign all our young players coming up at the end of the year and bring in quality talent.I can`t think of a figure.
5)I would pursue Semin and Richards because we need the talent and scoring.
6)At first I didn`t like the Stalberg deal but under closer inspection I notice that Versteeg is younger and has just as much talent or more and still hasn`t reach his full potential. So Versteeg.
