Desperate Times…

The decision to call-up Nazem Kadri from the American Hockey League may provide short-term stability on offence, but it speaks volumes of the state of peril of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I can’t help but cringe at Brian Burke‘s reasoning for the call-up:

“I think in an ideal world, if we would have won a few of the last games, we probably would have given him a little bit longer but he has made the adjustments we’ve asked him to, he’s cut down his turnovers. He’s drawing penalties almost every night by getting hauled down. He’s been responsible and he’s been good offensively so he’s made a lot of the transformations that we needed him to make. In an ideal world, maybe another couple weeks, maybe three weeks, but it’s not an ideal world. We’re scuffling here.”

Kadri’s 14 points in as many games is impressive, but it’s hardly enough to warrant fast-tracking his development. Let’s not forget that Kadri stumbled out of the gate in his AHL debut and professional scouts even remarked how he looked “like any other AHL player.” In fact, he even got benched during the third period of his first game with the Toronto Marlies for poor defensive decisions. With each passing game he has improved, however, and he has since displayed the offensive flair that got him drafted seventh overall. And with the Leafs’ free-fall in the Eastern Conference standings, perhaps it was inevitable for Kadri to have his turn on the big club.

My personal opinion is that this is nothing more than stop-gap and if the Leafs’ offensive woes are truly as devastating as their slump suggests, then chaos will unfold before long. Whether that means a trade or simply riding out the rest of the 2010-11 season, the end fate is inevitable.

The desperation move from Burke was at least handled appropriately, though, as the expectations set for Kadri have not been blown out of proportion. Still, with the attention now fixated on the 20-year-old forward, he’ll be expected to produce at much higher clip than his pre-season production.

Should Kadri falter and prove that he needs more AHL seasoning, it’s crucial the Leafs do not let him stay dead in the water and instead send him back to the Marlies immediately.

All that said, it’s hard to imagine a rebuilding team opting for a desperation move such as this. The only thing holding the Leafs from the post-season is themselves.

Kadri, please prove me wrong.

You stay classy, MLHS.

By the way I love David Backes, but a 4.5 cap hit is way, way too much!

I am hoping Kadri can come out and play with a chip on his shoulder as I think thats when he is at his best, I dont even care if he gets points right away as long as he looks dangerous he’ll open up the ice for his linemates and maybe spark them aswell.

We’re better than our recent record suggests. Kadri could be the spark to get us going again.
This team and it’s fans are in a psychological smorgasbord right now. Tonight marks the end of all this bull shit. 4-3 Leafs win.

By the way you will notice that I posted that November 12th, 2010 at 1:40pm. It’s because I’m from the future. I would tell you what happened in the Leaf’s/Canuck’s game but then I would be punished by the time police and it’s not worth it. lol

Maybe Burke showing some desperation might influence the players to do so too.

    here’s how i see it….

the leafs need offence, period. they simply can’t keep going the way they have been for the last 10 games and expect to start winning games. they were called out publicly by their goalie and had a players-only meeting, yet they still lost and frankly didn’t look very good. there aren’t any affordable trade options, so what can they do? call someone up from the marlies. kadri is the ONLY player on the marlies that is good enough to have any kind of impact offensively, so whether he’s ready or not, he’s in. at least for now.

the thing i hate about the panic over kadri’s call-up is that people sound like they’re assuming he’s up for good. yes, calling up kadri for the remainder of the season would be a bad thing. calling him up for a few games now is not the ideal situation since he’s not ready, but can it hurt? heck no. he doesn’t have to be the saviour, he’s just here to hopefully be a catalyst to the rest of the offence, get everyone else going. if it works, great! if not, kadri can be sent back to the AHL with a list of things he needs to keep working on. how is this a bad thing?

burke said before the season even started that kadri would get about 20 games. everyone assumed right away that kadri would start the season with the leafs, play about 20 games, and then be sent down. that would’ve been kinda silly, right? well, here’s where he gets his chance. personally i hope he’s not up for a full 20 games — the way i see it, he’ll get about 10 games and then armstrong will be back and he can be sent down, and then be called up again later if there’s another injury or at the end of the season (barring a marlies playoff drive).

That’s why he signed with St.Louis. That was pretty much the top end dollar amount he would have received in free agency, so there was no point in leaving the city. I doubt Burke would have paid that much for him. I think 4 was the limit for me, personally. People are quick to fall back to his 30 goal season, but Backes isn’t a 30 goal scorer. He’s a 50 point guy who is very useful, but you pay that money for goal scorers when you’re talking about forwards.

EDIT: By the way moimoi, read my response on the last thread. I wanted to know what you thought.

I dont think this is desperation….its why teams have farm teams…its not like any of the call ups to date have added anything. We have been bringing up guys who have been labelled power forward, or big body, or tough…blah blah blah….Naz is being called up for offense….and I am willing to bet he will do what he is being called up for better than what the other guys did for what they were called up to give.

Unfortuneately, I think players like Caputi need leadership to show them what driving the net, and playing big looks like in the NHL. He’s fully capable of it, but he comes up here and takes on the identity of the team, just like Hanson and all the rest. Kadri is a little different beast though, you’re right, and I hope he can have a night like he did against Ottawa in the pre-season.

Yes, but even the media scoffed at that. In the end, he didn’t fall too far short. He might have got 5 in free agency, but not from Burke.

    @ Andrew R:
Not sure if you realized but the teams you referr to like Boston didnt rebuild the way your saying either. They went out and signed big name players (Chara, Savard), tanked one year BUT gave that one player away (Kessel) and then traded their 1st rounders to get players (Horton) and other trades like Raycroft for Rask which whenever Burke makes those trades (like Antropov, Poni or Moore) you verbally bash him. Just stop please……just stop because you will never be right. Who knows what would have been down the other path of rebuilding if Burke chose it. Either wait it out and see if he can fix this, or continue to bash him just 2 years into him job

That is an excellent example of what I’ve been trying to say. It’s not a sure fire method. In fact, the only teams to be completely successful did it inadvertently.
