Could It Get Any Worse?

To say the least, it was a disappointing weekend in Leaf land. A decent effort Saturday versus the Canucks was spoiled, Kadri’s season debut will mostly be remembered for losing the puck on a 3-on-1, and ex-Leaf Viktor Stalberg scored his 6th goal of the season for the Blackhawks…in overtime…with Brian Burke in attendance.

The Maple Leafs’ losing streak ballooned to 8 games after falling to the Canucks on a weak goal on J.S. Giguere in the third period Saturday. Giguere made some big saves throughout the game, but couldn’t make an easy one in the end. Perhaps Brett Lebda should have gotten his stick out of the way, but it’s still one that Giguere’s got to have. I still think Jonas Gustavsson should be getting more games in goal.

As for Nazem Kadri, losing the puck on that 3-on-1 with the game tied in the third, shows that he was a little jittery with the game on the line. I also thought that he got knocked over way too easily on a couple of occasions. Oh, and he lost the puck on a shootout attempt in the Leafs skill competition on Sunday as well.

Last but not least, Viktor Stalberg scored the overtime winner as the Blackhawks beat the Ducks on Sunday, with Brian Burke looking on no less. Stalberg played on the top line with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, and looked really good. I don’t want to start the whole Stalberg versus Versteeg comparison, as Stalberg has a lot more talented players around him. However, it’s kind of disheartening to see him blossoming with 6 goals despite getting a lot less ice time than Versteeg, who has 2.

However, there are some positives coming out of the weekend:

Kadri set up a couple of great chances in the third period on Saturday. He showed his creativity and will only get more comfortable as he gets more NHL games under his belt.

Mikhail Grabovski has 3 goals in his last 4 games, 7 points in the last 6 games and continues to lead the team with a +7 rating, a pretty remarkable stat on a team that has lost 11 of 16 games this season.

Phil Kessel broke his 7-game pointless drought with a goal on the power play, in which the Leafs had not scored on in their previous 3 games.

As for Kris Versteeg, I still think he’s one of, if not the best, all-around player on the Leafs. He’s a smart player with a ton of talent, he’s just had a tough time finishing. He seemingly gets a breakaway every other game, so at least he’s still getting his chances. Also, Versteeg has 5 points in the last 6 games, and I’m pretty sure that Stalberg can’t do this:

Yup hence my 2nd sentence about the realistic possible outcome. It would be nice if Komi managed to get us a good return from someone, but Beauch being part of a package for a big forward would be awesome too

hmm was he in the new jersey system at one point?

only 5ft 11 though don’t we need a bigtime centre?

i like that stick kadri on the third line too and that could be an excellent line for us. with those lines we could play a game where we have 3 top lines.

You able to get on the site yet by normal means?

no at work right now and going through Google Chrome all is fine. Will let you know how things are once I get home. I tried resetting my Router and Modem yesterday and that didn’t work except to screw up my wife’s lap top wireless settings but even after that the only way I could get on was with the fake IP address but for awhile even that didn’t work on the weekend. How about you?

So TSN takes blogger’s scoop, credits blog, then uses their own access to dig deeper and shed more light. This is how it’s supposed to work.

Had a look see and when I read this paragraph I started to laugh. You fuckin nuts or what.

Burke has contacted Anaheim about Joffrey Lupul. He is set to come back from injury. Lupul currently makes 4.25 million a year and the Leafs can afford to take on his contract. And Anaheim would love to move his contract. The Leafs are offering Mikhail Grabovski.

    @ Jordan:
There is no way Burke is spending 4.25 million for two more years after this on a 27 year old that has had two operations on his back, multiple concussions and a career high of 28 goals in a season, let alone giving away assets for him.

three words dale fucking mitchell. Honestly this kid is all heart and sole and its no coincedence that he actually gets a fair shot on the marlies that they start winning again. If we stay with this kid for a year or two hes going to be a huge bottom six guy for us i just hope he continues to get a fair shot.

thats what makes lupul so attractive. hes got zero value i mean we can trade a dman and we might actually get lupul AND that kyle palmieri kid. With lupul you cna look at the bad that cap hit and the injuries but dont ignore the good hes scored 28 fucking goals thats excellent for a second line guy who can be had for next to NOTHING and hes got a knack for scoring a the right time i mean he had a hat trick in that crutial playoff game 3-4 years ago. If anaheim want the world for him then obviously fuck no but if we have a chance to get him for next to nothing he could be one hell of a pick up.
