To say the least, it was a disappointing weekend in Leaf land. A decent effort Saturday versus the Canucks was spoiled, Kadri’s season debut will mostly be remembered for losing the puck on a 3-on-1, and ex-Leaf Viktor Stalberg scored his 6th goal of the season for the Blackhawks…in overtime…with Brian Burke in attendance.

The Maple Leafs’ losing streak ballooned to 8 games after falling to the Canucks on a weak goal on J.S. Giguere in the third period Saturday. Giguere made some big saves throughout the game, but couldn’t make an easy one in the end. Perhaps Brett Lebda should have gotten his stick out of the way, but it’s still one that Giguere’s got to have. I still think Jonas Gustavsson should be getting more games in goal.

As for Nazem Kadri, losing the puck on that 3-on-1 with the game tied in the third, shows that he was a little jittery with the game on the line. I also thought that he got knocked over way too easily on a couple of occasions. Oh, and he lost the puck on a shootout attempt in the Leafs skill competition on Sunday as well.

Last but not least, Viktor Stalberg scored the overtime winner as the Blackhawks beat the Ducks on Sunday, with Brian Burke looking on no less. Stalberg played on the top line with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, and looked really good. I don’t want to start the whole Stalberg versus Versteeg comparison, as Stalberg has a lot more talented players around him. However, it’s kind of disheartening to see him blossoming with 6 goals despite getting a lot less ice time than Versteeg, who has 2.

However, there are some positives coming out of the weekend:

Kadri set up a couple of great chances in the third period on Saturday. He showed his creativity and will only get more comfortable as he gets more NHL games under his belt.

Mikhail Grabovski has 3 goals in his last 4 games, 7 points in the last 6 games and continues to lead the team with a +7 rating, a pretty remarkable stat on a team that has lost 11 of 16 games this season.

Phil Kessel broke his 7-game pointless drought with a goal on the power play, in which the Leafs had not scored on in their previous 3 games.

As for Kris Versteeg, I still think he’s one of, if not the best, all-around player on the Leafs. He’s a smart player with a ton of talent, he’s just had a tough time finishing. He seemingly gets a breakaway every other game, so at least he’s still getting his chances. Also, Versteeg has 5 points in the last 6 games, and I’m pretty sure that Stalberg can’t do this:

28 goals in a season is great I agree but that was a career high and it was also before the back issues…I just can’t accept the cap hit of 4.25 for him, that would seriously limit moves in the future (re-signing Kaberle, aquiring a BIG centre)

    @ canucksnaphook:

Let me put it this way. Are the Blues really missing Stempniak these days? What about the Hawks with Versteeg? Are they really missing him over what they are getting out of Stalberg? How about Boston? Perhaps last year they WERE missing Kessel’s goal output. But the contributions they are getting from Jordan Caron and Seguin is making up for that loss.
    .
It was in the news recently about how many first rounders are on the Leafs roster vs. other teams. Aside from Schenn and now Kadri, that’s pretty low. The only other regular who is a draft pick is Kulemin while Gunnerson and John Mitchell are repeatedly trading seats in the press box.
    .
If July 1st is suppose to be the team’s “Draft”, the supply is running out quickly for next summer with Jeff Carter being recently locked up. Acquiring Armstrong, Lebda, Mueller as free agents over this summer cannot certainly be viewed as a strong “draft” by any means.
    .
If this team is sitting 15th by the end of next week, it’s time to start pushing the emphasis on drafting vs. trading for younger prospects. It’s just too expense and counter-productive when you are trading your own prospects for other team’s prospects.

Versteeg really isn’t “hindsight”. Stalbergs’s point production last season projected to be relatively close to Versteegs in an 82 game span. Stalberg’s big(something we lack), he’s fast, and was only in his first season. Trade doesn’t make sense, more so considering BB gave up 2 other prospects with him to get KV (3 if you include Sweatt).

All these Leafs were first rounders playing for the team now: Komisarek7th overall, Sjostrom 11th overall, Phaneuf 9th overall, Giguere 13th overall, Kessel 5th overall, Armstrong 21st overall, Schenn 5th overall, Kadri 7th overall.

We have a lot of first rounders, just most aren’t very good.

Yes we did. But it is going to take a few years for players like Brad Ross and McKegg to develop. And I am more than willing to wait, but will Leafs management have the patience to wait for this guys to develop into their core, or trade them for immediate help? That is the question.

    @ Johnfergusonjr

No question there is first round talent on the club, just not drafted by the Leafs. However, is
Komisarek, Sjostrom and Giguere giving the club play that is indicitive of firsy round picks while Arnstrong and Phaneuf are out? I think not.

Thing is, guys like me, Andrew R, and a few others get bashed for simply just stating the obvious. My reason(I can’t speak for Andrew R or anyone else) is the fact that, when reading some posts, I get the feeling some fans have gotten too used to bad decisions. We all know you can’t go back and re-do it, but what frustrates me is when fans accept head shaker deals and brush it off like “who cares”. Again, I can’t speak for anyone else, but I like Versteeg and Kessel(sometimes)as players, I’m not bashing them, it’s the management team and the moves they make on what should have been a complete ground roots rebuild. Does this look like a deal a rebuilding SHOULD be doing?

P.Kessel, K.Versteeg and 6-7 million cap hit on the Leaf books
    for
    1st round 2010, 2nd round 2010,1st round 2011, V.Stalberg, Dido, Paradis,Sweatt

Dude, Andrew doesn’t get bashed for ‘stating the obvious’. He gets bashed for his ‘holier than thou’ attitude. Sometimes he’s bang on though. And then there’s claiming that Antropov would be our best player today…

    @ Pazuzu:

Good post, even though I’m on the other side of the fence of this argument. For me it’s not a matter of brushing bad deals aside, it’s just reality that we have no power in the decision making process. Sure some deals are absurd and one GM gets fleeced (although I think people are rushing judgment in this case, it’s far too early) but that’s the nature of the business–like gambling, you win some and lose some. No need to get all I’m right-you’re wrong-and it feels damn good even though we’re all fans who want to see the team succeed- captain hindsight on people.

    Go Leafs… even the one’s I dislike (*cough*Beauchemin*cough)

On a positive note, I hope RW slides Versteeg to the middle on the 3rd line with Army and Shoey. I really like what I saw from Bozak and Grabs lines vs VAN. Aulie was a pleasent surprise as well. Man ,did I feel bad for Kadri. You can tellhe wants to do welland stick. He played pretty well considering the unbelievable pressure he must be feeling. Where else but Toronto would a call up from the minors be front page news? Let’s hope BB and RW keep both around for a couple of weeks, stick to the line combonations he had Saturday night, so they can settle in, get comfortable and play their game.

    @ Pazuzu:
“Stalberg’s point production last year projected to be relatively close to Versteeg’s”. This is the reason guy’s like you get bashed Mr. Pazazu. Stating blatant lies, I don’t know whether you’re just bad at math or just completely confused. Over an 82 game schedule these were the projection’s.
    Versteeg 82gp 21g 25a 46pts
    Stalberg 82 18g 10a 28pts.
    Goal’s were close. Good try.
Stalberg is on pace to get 26g 17a 43pts this year. Maybe that’s what you were thinking. Versteeg 11g 27a 38pts. Maybe Stalberg is getting blown a little out of proportion. Don’t you think? Also your assesment of basically Burke trade Stalberg, Dido, Paradis, and Sweatt for Versteeg is so blatantly wrong I can’t even comment on it.

Deal would have been Kaberle+Steen+???? I forget who else. Looks like Edmonton made the wrong move lol, could still have Kaberle. They now have nothing after a ton of sideways trades

    @ Pazuzu:
He traded Stalberg, Dido, and Paradis for Versteeg and Sweatt. That’s it, that’s all. Shit happen’s! He thought he could sign Sweatt, and it didn’t work that way. You can’t fault him on that really. It’s just a shitty set of circumstance’s. The guy wanted to play with his brother. That suck’s for us and Burke. Burke tried to make the team better by getting a player who he believed was a better player(as does most of the hockey world), and he tried to get a prospect to replace the 2 lost. If you really want to look at it from the way it should be looked at it was Stalberg, Didomenico and Tlusty for Versteeg, and the right’s to Bill Sweatt.
    .
Honestly, I was a skeptic at first. You can look back if you want. I said I didn’t like that we just gave up on our prospect’s again. It was Didomenico that I was worried about. I thought it might come back too bite us in the ass. So far it look’s like that’s not going to happen and that Sweatt was a better prospect than Dido. Again, that’s just ended up being bad luck with Sweatt. Oh well let’s move on. Chicago is better for now with the cheaper Stalberg and were better for now with the more complete player in Versteeg.
    .
I would like to see a compensation pick thrown at team’s that lose a junior aged player or college player too free agency. If that player won’t sign with you, you should not be punished. Just like Blake Wheeler when he didn’t sign with Phoenix. These aren’t player’s the team’s didn’t want. They were just being arrogant asshole’s.
