It appears as if goaltender Jussi Rynnas is adjusting well to life in North America after a bit of a rough start at the Maple Leafs‘ rookie camp in September. Rynnas posted a perfect 3-0-0 record this past week to go along with a scintillating 1.00 GAA and 0.971 SV% en route to earning the AHL’s Player of the Week honours. Overall on the season, the 23 year old Finnish netminder boasts a 3-3-1 record, a 1.95 GAA and 0.936 SV%.

Here’s what Allaire had to say about Rynnas back in September:

“I like his size for sure. He’s a very big guy. For a guy of his size, I like his speed. Good legs. Very quick glove. He’s got different good tools. He has a lot of good points.”

James Reimer, the other half of the Marlies‘ youthful dynamic duo between the pipes, has gone 5-3-1 with a 2.90 GAA and 0.918 SV% through 9 games. Meanwhile, Alberta native Ben Scrivens, Toronto’s other free agent signee of the summer, is 4-3 with a 2.46 GAA and 0.931 SV% through 7 games played for the Reading Royals of the ECHL.

good write up and it shows Burkie truly is filling the cupboard and started with the Goal out as he promised. Lots of reason to still be excited about our future. Goal and D are depth solid now move on Burkie to the forward ranks. He will no doubt get that done too.

Not sure if this article was posted yet but an interesting read.

And yet, I continually see trade proposals around these parts that include a goalie COMING back to Toronto?? Its like people dont even pay attention to what is going on with our prospects.

Thanks for the info on our stable of young studs between the pipes.

Wonder if Scrivens resigns with us, how much it will cost. Pretty sure he is on a one year. Can’t like playing in the E though.

next year, we lose jiggy and spend those dollars on a forward.

we go with jonas and either rynnas or reimer as backup.

the other of rynnas or reimer plays with scrivens on the marlies.

by the end of NEXT season (or at the trade deadline) we will know which of these young goalies we are going to keep and we can hopefully trade away at least one of them for a decent return.

then, go out and sign another two of the ‘best goalies not in the NHL’.

burke probably has the genius plan to sell allaire and the leafs as a training ground and entry point for unsigned goalies to get into the league. if jonas, rynnas and scrivens are all playing pro hockey in a few years, it would seem like an easy sell to go out and get at least another two good young unsigned goalies.

burke did this before didn’t he? didn’t he bring up a goalie that ended up in phoenix?? a good plan for sure, because we don’t use draft picks to get these guys, and we could turn them into our own goalies and/or trade bait. who knows, we could potentially parlay a guy like rynnas (or scrivens) into either a starting goalie for us or a first round draft pick.

It takes a goalie a few years to be able to crack an NHL roster, there are some exceptions but most times there is a learning curve. I don’t think Burke has drafted a goalie in the two years he has been there. Leaves that up to signings and strictly drafts forwards and defense.

    @ tron:
If everything works out, Gustavsson should be ready to roll the #1 and we will have
    Leafs-
    Gustavsson
    Reimer/Ryanns
    Marlies
    Reimer/Ryanns
    Scrivens
    That’s what I’m thinking anyways

    @Jordan
I agree with that, that’s what I was thinking as well. Wish Monster would get a couple of more games this year and not sure if Reimer or Rynnas will be the one up.

    @Flappy Paddle

Scrivens signed a one year, Rynnas a two year.

Belak was hilarious, Can’t decide who I am more excited to see score Orr or Belak.

Jonas Gustavsson – 2 year contract (ends after next season) – upon expiry, he is an UNrestricted Free Agent

Ben Scrivens – 1 year contract (ends after this season) – upon expiry, he is a Restricted Free Agent

Jussi Rynnas – 2 year contract (ends after next season) – upon expiry, he is a Restricted Free Agent

James Reimer – 3 year contract (ends after this season) – upon expiry, he is a Restricted Free Agent

So if we don’t resign them, we’ll get compensated with picks. All except the monster, who is due after next season.

I bet Reimer resigns for a two-year deal after this season, and I bet Scrivens also resigns for a 2-year deal after this season. But only if Jiggy does NOT resign. They will all then have a chance to keep playing more at a higher level. The battle between Rynnas/Reimer for who makes it to the big club first will be VERY interesting. I see one of our young guys (Rynnas?) coming through surprisingly strong and actually challenging for the number 1 spot on the big club within 2 years. The way the NHL goes, this often happens, where young goalies seemingly come from nowhere and end up posting a great year in the NHL. I think with the sheer number of young goalies in our system, and Allaire as their coach, we are bound to experience that over the next couple of years with one of our guys.

i really liked scrivens, he looked great in camp, i think over time as he receives better playing time and a bigger role, we’ll see an amazing goalie

i also liked scrivens a lot in camp. and rynnas looked weak. but rynnas is now seeming to find his legs. maybe he is learning the N.American game. Who knows, maybe a year in the AHL would have been the best place for The Monster to learn as well.

Maybe that will be the factor that allows Rynnas to leapfrog Jonas over the next couple of years.

All conjecture of course. I just like being deep with good young goalies. No superstars like Luongo, or Price, or anything, but those can’t miss young guys are WAY more rare than the nameless goalies who prove their value only after a few years in the AHL…..

We are deep at goalie. We are TOO deep at high priced D.

Our top 6 forwards are very very weak as a group.

Where we need to improve is obvious.

i’d also like to comment on kadri. i think this kid is gonna be REAL good. you simply can’t teach the kind of hands he has.

watching highlights of him the other night, you can see his biggest weakness now is being soft on the puck. too easy to knock around. that is because he is still learning to play with men. when he adds some more mass, and learns how to play HIS game in THIS league, he will be just as dangerous as he was in junior. we’ll see some glimpses of it this year, and it will be on full display from next season onwards.

in fact, i bet this season will be the only time in his career he’ll get less than 50 points. i think he’ll be our first point-a-game guy since mats, once he strengthens up a little more and learns this league.

Alec or anyone who can tell me why, seems every other comment I am posting are coming up with “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” There isnt any swearing and the funny part is both comments that are being moderated are about Reimer being the better then Rynna’s in the battle for next year’s back up battle. If you can let me know whats going on it would be much appriecated.

    @ Bring the Cup Home:
I sure hope you are right. If one more first round pick is traded away for anything other than Sid the kid (I jest) I think there will be a lot of band wagon jumping.

We have the scouts, lets get some more home grown talent.

    @ Mortar:

agreed. i think we did well in the draft this past year. brad ross is looking like a great agitator-in-waiting.

greg mckegg has the potential to make it as a top 6 guy if all goes well.

josh nicholls is doing quite well this year.
