Saying Goodbye to Pat Burns

According to TSN, Pat Burns, the only coach to ever win the Jack Adams Trophy with three different NHL clubs, has passed away due to complications with cancer.

“For those who know me well, I’ve never backed down from any fight, and I’m not going to back down from this one,” said Burns. He was a man who was full of energy and determination both behind the bench and in life to the very end.

We at MLHS send our condolences to the Burns’ family as we remember our favorite Leaf moments of the legendary head coach.

“I know my life is nearing its end and I accept that,” said Burns. “As for my career, I always said to my kids, ‘you don’t cry because it’s over, you’re happy because it happened.’ That’s the main thing. I’m happy it happened.”

  • Bob is your uncle

I wish I had met Pat Burns sometime. Unfortunately I didn’t… but my shirt did. I bought a shirt once, that I really liked, with a couple of moose on the front and the back. Real flash, looked good…. but it was too small and I bought it on sale and couldn’t bother to take it back. So I gave it to a friend and he was wearing it one day having a beer and checking out some tittie dancers at a bar, not far from The Gardens. In comes Pat Burns and as he’s walking by he stops and says to my buddy, “Hey, nice shirt”. I should have been there.
Here’s to Pat Burns, a great Leaf coach and a man with good taste.
    Thanks Pat. R.I.P.

Pat almost took us to the Promised Land. Fuckin Helmet Hair.
He was a winner and a fighter. He was a man’s man, tenacious, courageous and dignified.
May he forever rest in that big, silver Stanley Cup in the Sky.
    RIP Mr. Burns.

My thoughts are with the Burns family at this time,…definitely a fighter right to the end.

The Hall of Fame Committee has a huge black eye on this one,…funny how some people have little or no compassion to allow this man to enjoy a huge accomplishment while alive,…disgraceful

The Leafs under Pat Burns took on his personality: a blue collar team that played tough, tenacious hockey. Despite not going all of the way to the Cup, those times were magic to a young Leafs fan that knew nothing but futility up to that point.

Also saddened about the passing of former Leaf great Gaye Stewart. I never got to see him play but the fact that he was the last Leaf player to lead the league in goals says something about how good of a player he was. Stewart showed true courage by leaving his hockey career and signing up with the Canadian Navy during the Second World War.

May both men rest in peace.

Would have been the PERFECT MAN for this Leafs team. Fits Burkes bill for his type of playing team.

Truly one of my favorite Leaf coaches, he showed the passion behind the bench, as if he was on the ice. Great guy from all accounts, thanks for the memories Pat.
