Streak ends at two for scoreless Leafs

In the search for a string of victories in order to remove the attention from their recent losing skid, the Toronto Maple Leafs arrived in Quebec for an always exciting brand of Hockey Night in Canada and a game against their longtime rival Montreal Canadiens.

Perhaps, some memories of the days when 6am practices were the norm and playing in the NHL was just a dream were flowing among the Maple Leafs, as fathers of the players made the trip to Montreal for their annual father/son event. Supporting their sons and looking to inspire their motivation, the fathers were in for an exciting and emotional game as the Leafs look for an important two points.

Starting in goal for tonight’s divisional battle was Jonas Gustavsson. After relieving J.S. Giguere, who removed himself from the Leafs slump ending victory on Tuesday, Gustavsson has looked poised and determined to take the reigns. A strong performance on Thursday against the Devils has given his teammates the confidence in him to grab hold of their third straight win in Montreal. When asked about the atmosphere and emotion that comes with the Maple Leafs/Canadiens rivalry, Gustavsson had this to say.

“It’s awesome, you want to play those games when the crowd is going nuts and it’s really loud. Games with a big rival are always fun to play because you really want to win those games. That’s a game I’m really looking forward to.”

The excitement wouldn’t take long to build as the Leafs and Canadiens came out skating hard. While both goaltenders had to be sharp, it was Jonas Gustavsson playing the role of Monster as he shut the door on a flurry of Montreal chances. With his team on the power play, Gustavsson bailed them out from a short handed chance to keep the game scoreless through the first period.

The second period would be no different as the goaltending battle would continue, with Carey Price displaying his efforts as the Leafs were pressing. Jonas Gustavsson was tracking the puck well and seemed to leave no rebounds. While Gustavsson’s remaimed steady, the Canadiens found their first goal of the night on a perfect tip by Jeff Halpern. The redirected shot was the only play that could find its way passed either goaltender, as the Canadiens headed into the locker room with a 1-0 lead at the end of the second period.

The third period began in the same fashion as the first two, with a fast pace and agressive play. The period progressed and so too did the agression, as a flurry of hits resulted in a John Mitchell high sticking call. With the Canadiens were on the power play, a mental breakdown saw Mike Komisarek pass the puck through the slot and Mike Cammalleri made no mistake, one-timing it passed a sprawling Gustavsson, giving the Canadiens the two goal lead. Turnovers were the cause of the Maple Leafs demise in this game, and none were more glaring than the sloppy play by Mike Komisarek. Late in the third, the Leafs were able to generate a few chances, but the puck would somehow stay out of the Montreal goal, allowing Carey Price and the Canadiens to walk away with the 2-0 shutout victory.

If the Maple Leafs are to recover the valuable points needed to make their way back up the Eastern Conference ladder, their attention to detail must improve. A hard worked and relatively even game with the Canadiens was dropped on a few detail oriented plays and one timely mistake.

“We gift-wrapped a couple for them,” said Leafs Head Coach Ron Wilson after the game. “And we couldn’t find a way to score.” Komisarek’s giftwrapped giveaway notwithstanding, Ron Wilson’s penalty kill continues to struggle as it has in the two seasons before, sitting 28th in the league despite stabilized goaltending and a ton of money invested in the backend.

It’s unfair to get too down on Komisarek himself given his early rebound in his sophomore season as a Leaf, but it’s not like this was one brain cramp that can be forgiven and forgotten for a Leafs team that leads the league in giveaways. Perhaps attributable to their status as the youngest team in the league, mental mistakes are happening all over the ice. It’s veterans like Komisarek and Beauchemin (a repeat offender in this regard) that have to be a solution not contributors to this problem.

Jonas Gustavsson deserved a better fate, however the mistakes made by his teammates swayed the game out of their favor. With his team unable to score, Gustavsson found himself once again on the wrong end of a great performance. When asked if the frustration boils as the clock ticks without a goal, Gustavsson spoke of his focus on doing his job and providing the team a chance to win.

“I worry about helping keep (my teammates) in the game, whether we score or not. Maybe next game we will score five goals. You can’t think about it.”

Gustavsson and Head Coach Ron Wilson will be hoping for as many goals as it will take when the Maple Leafs welcome the Dallas Stars to the Air Canada Centre on Monday. Making a few corrections and giving the same effort from tonight’s game will help avoid a consecutive loss. Anything less will see their latest two game win streak erased very quickly.

    @ danvrtsng:
i completely agree Stajan wasn’t the best guy off the ice and i’m still glad he’s gone but when i look at him and bozak to me they come off as the same type of player on the ice with minor differences

Dudes we did the same thing with schenn as were doing with bozak. Kids great just got the sophomore slump he’s going to be a great number 2 guy for this team down the road. I don’t understand why we are all doom an gloom that game against the habs wasn’t that bad at all they only won because we gift wrapped two goals for them. Aside from that we could have easily slipped out with a win. I mean Montreal is atop the standings right now and the only beat us through dumb rookie mistakes so let’s not worry about it and look forward to Monday.

Why the fuck are we back on stajan bashing? That always drove me fucking nuts the guys and offensive third line center nothing more or less an people hated him for it. Like explain to me how th fuk he’s was a microphone hog?? He was the only one with the nuts to come out after the leafs lost game after game and speak I mean he didn’t have that by choice he was put in that spot by the coaching staff and by the rest of his team last time I checked that’s leadership.

Bozaks minus rating has alot to do with kessel being completely lost defensively i mean we blame komiserek for bad defensive plays when kessel fucked him at least 5 times last night with shit defense. Kessel is a good kid and there’s not doubt he’ll get some coaching on I and be much better eventually but we have to recognize that our defense is capable of a stanley cup if they had an offense that was even just a little defensively capable. This team is capable of good things problem is there shooting themselves in the foot i think we need to be patient for once in the last decade. This team is th youngest and has one of the lowest Gaa’s in the league those are the stats that show you this team is capable of great things when our offense gets that last peice.

Not only does RW not call out guys like Beauch, Komi, Lebda when they display “nasty habits”, but, we are down by one goal, there’s a tv time out, and he throws out the forth line? What about that blown coverage on the short handed goal? If I recall correctly, all three forwards were making a break for the neutral zone. What is the system again?

I wonder if Shane Doan will be availible sometime this year? I would like to see him on the top line LW. He would be the perfect veteran power forward for us, and maybe he wants out of Phoenix?

I think we need to find a coach who’s specialty if the PP period and utilize their expertise and admit that our current coaches can’t cut it. I am not saying we fire our coaches, although I am OK with that too, but at least spend the resources to acquire a person to just teach the PP, just like BB went out and got Allaire for just the goalies MLSE can afford to add another specialist and it doesn’t count against the cap.

I think everybody needs to lay off on Bozak. On page 1 (I think) I said myself that he isn’t a legit first line centre but added that I would love to see him on the 3rd line with Versteeg and Armstrong when they return. That line would be lights out. This kid hasn’t played a full NHL season yet and some people are throwing him under the bus and comparing him to that jackoff Stajan. Stajan will be 27 by the end of this year and is in his 7th full season in the NHL. As a 24 year old, in his 4th full season his stats looked like this:
    GP82 G16 A17 P33 +/- -11
33pts and a minus 11. Now Bozak to date:
    GP56 G10 A22 P32 +/- -7
    .
Not too shabby if you ask me. Basically he has 26 more games to get 2 pts to beat Stajans 4th year stats in his 1st year. Give this kid some time. Stajan took a long time to round into a 55-60pt guy, meanwhile Bozak is already on pace for 47pts in his “first year.” Not bad for a rookie if you ask me.

I think the fourth line has been among the most disappointing parts of the line-up since the losing ways began. Brown and Orr aren’t short on effort but they aren’t playing like a fourth line either; they should be bringing consistent body banging and shift disturbance.

The penalty kill point is a good one. The most successful penalty kill units play an aggressive, puck pressure approach and block shots furiously. The Leafs PK has been far too passive, as it has for the past two seasons under Wilson. The traditional box set up is fading in popularity in favour of the more in-your-face style of killing penalties.

Bozak, Kessel and Kadri are dangerous in the offensive zone but struggle to get out of their own. There isn’t a ton of defensive acumen on that line.

The shorter passes in the breakout Wilson has been stressing as a safer alternative to the long stretch passes that were resulting in giveaways kind of backfired last night with that Komi gaffe. Still think it’s the right way to go though, Wilson didn’t specify to float blind passes across your own crease.

He’s not a big name, but the Leafs might want to go after BC kid Andrew Ladd – and make him our top line center at 6’3 205 Age 24 … He’s their captain, and an RFA. They will have to sign a number of players in the off-season and might be over cap.

    http://thrashers.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8471217

They Leafs might have to pay a steep price with a prospect or two, but he’s young and seriously you can’t operate with almost zero experience up the middle.

Also, BB needs to wake up and remember ‘truculence’ doesn’t simply mean having a few big-name D-men with obscene contracts – and having Colton Orr play 5 minutes a game on the fourth line. It takes more than that.

So aside from a capable center, we need a banging winger in our top 6, too.

Dammit, Anaheim traded Syvret to Philly and got Patrick Maroon, he is 6’4″ center who used to be Knight. Real upside in that kid.

Excuse me but what the hell was Colton Orr on the ice for against the fastest team in the NHL. He had no role last night as a heavyweight… I held my breath when he got near the puck as the Hab player just blew by him…. He should have been replaced for that game last night…

p.s …that Carey Price scares the hell out of me as a Leaf Fan …looks like Montreal has a young Brodeur or even better… damn ……The monster played real well last night …
