Thursday Thinkers

Some links for your Thursday afternoon enjoyment:

Mark Sutcliffe of the Ottawa Citizen makes the case for banning Leaf fans from attending Leafs-Senators games at Scotiabank place. Apparently the Senators’ front office have been getting complaints from their supporters about Leaf fans “ruining the experience”.

The National Post‘s Michael Traikos praises winger Clarke MacArthur on his tremendous start to the season thus far. Not only have his contributions to the scoresheet been impressive but his enthusiasm and work ethic has been contagious. The 25 year old former Major Junior star is currently on pace for a 74 point campaign, and attributes his success to simply getting an opportunity to play. In his words, Toronto was really the only city that would “give a free-agent bum like me a chance.”

The Globe and Mail explains that Brett Lebda has had a horrific start to the ’10-’11 campaign and is beginning to feel left out. The veteran blueliner has somehow managed to accumulate a team worst -9 rating despite very limited ice-time in the ten games he’s actually managed to dress for. For his part, Lebda feels that he has generally been working hard, but realizes that the numbers are ultimately the bottom line and that he will have to continue to work at picking up his level of play.

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star takes an early season look back at the Versteeg trade that sent forward Viktor Stalberg along with prospects Chris Didomenico and Phillipe Paradis to Chicago. McGran asserts that both teams have done quite well thus far, as Stalberg is slowly getting more ice-time and trust from head coach Joel Quenneville while Versteeg has been fantastic over the past handful of games handling the point on the Leafs’ powerplay. Steeger’s versatility and strong two-way play have been leaned on heavily by Ron Wilson thus far, as the youngster has averaged 20:23 minutes of ice-time a game, good for 18th among league forwards.

It’s not as though every playoff team is just full of elite power forwards. Where is Pittsburgh’s power forward? What about Montreal? They don’t even have a Kulemin type hybrid powerforward. I think we could squeek in just by adding forward depth. Kessel returning to form (and it will happen – it always does), and Armstrong returning probably moves us up the GF/G in league standings, but adding another forward or two on our way to April could be all we need. You need toughness in that top six to be hard to play against, and to win playoff series, but that isn’t really the goal this year….

No mention of Brad Ross or Greg McKegg in connection with team Canada at the juniors either, not surprizingly. McKegg is a top 10 scorer in the OHL (currently sitting at 9th, but has been in the top 5). Ross is just a beast – PPG player who does everything, but no, let’s talk about Jaden Scwartz – he’s got 18 points in 12 games at some unknown college program, yay! It’s such a joke. TSN lost their credibility in hockey a long time ago….

If we somehow managed to add a Simmonds type player to our team than I think the playoffs is a realistic possibility. We would need to move a Beauchemin to get there likely with a prospect. But then the lineup has the necessary sandpaper and I keep harping on this but Orr should be used sparingly as required against tougher teams only and not every game.

I like the Seto rumours as well but he lacks the toughness required to compete in the playoffs. Great long term but not so much short term.

    Kadri-Bozak-Kessel
    Kulemin-Grabo-Mac
    Simmonds-Steeger-Armstrong
    Sjostrom-Brent-Brown
    Orr

    Phaneuf – Komi
    Kaberle – Schenn
    Aulie – Gunner
    Lebda

    Gustavsson
    Giguere

    Thoughts?

    good news from the minors:

McKegg with 4 goals tonight. hell yeah.

back in the Top 10 in scoring.

with him and Ross, I think we did real well at the draft last year.

plus, josh nicholls with 30 points in 22 games, and a +18. not too shabby at all.

if nicholls keeps going at this pace, he’ll end up in the top 10 or 15 in whl scoring as well. so we have:

    1. top 10 goal scorer in OHL.

    2. top 10 – 15 point producer in WHL.

    3. perhaps best agitator prospect NOT in the nhl.

All refining their game is great junior leagues.

I hate to say this, but I think Lupul is probably going to end up a Leaf by the end of the year. He’s going to be super affordable (ie. Finger + mid-level prospect) since Anaheim really can’t afford to pay him, and have very little need for him at his price tag. I am pretty against this, but the one positive thing is that Lupul looks to be in amazing shape. He did an interview last week during an Anaheim game. He hasn’t been on the ice, but he’s clearly been working very hard. He also sounded desperate to get back to hockey. That 4.25 cap hit is just so enormous though, and what really bothers me about it is the way he’s been tossed around to so many different teams – he would probably just become trade bait here again.

Not to mention Jesse Blacker playing nearly PPG hockey as a defensemen (and still only 19), and refining his defensive game to become a huge plus player (+7 currently). There’s also Sondre Olden who’s developing in a men’s league (SEL), and while not doing anything spectacular yet (0 points in 3 games), has a fantastic skill set. Finally, people forget Jerry D’Amigo is also playing in a men’s league at just 19, and getting better every game. We have just an awesome pool of young talent coming up through the system.
    -
EDIT: I also fully expect Burke to add Blake Kessel (Phil’s bro) to that pool this summer. He will be a UFA August 15th just like Sweatt was this year. Any chance he actually signs with the Islanders? I doubt it. Pretty much makes up for the Sweatt debacle if Burke gets that done.

Heres a good story on MacArthur…

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/macarthur-proves-himself-all-over-again/article1814330/?cmpid=rss1&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

I hope the leafs resign him, hope he isnt asking for a bag of cash though, something reasonable. He seems like someone who would take enough money to make the right fit though.

I like Clark MacArthur but he I don’t think he’s a top 6 guy on a contender. And he doesn’t really suit the bottom 6 that well. My advice for him: put up good numbers this year and go for the money on July 1st.

Royals rookie forward Mikhail Stefanovich recorded his first-career hat trick including the game-winning goal to give the Reading Royals (10-6-0-0) a 4-3 overtime victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones (7-5-4-1) at the Sovereign Center on Wednesday night.

    @ Cameron:
I wouldn’t be totally against Burke bringing in Lupul, but I’d much rather see a young power forward similar to him, just cheaper, brought in to play the wing.
    .
I believe the difference of the Leafs making the playoffs and making the playoffs and doing some damage when they get there is contingent on Burke bringing in a Top Line Center/Left Winger.
    Kadri/LW – Kadri/C – Kessel
    MacArthur – Grabovski – Kulemin
    Versteeg – Bozak – Armstrong
    Brown – Brent – Orr/Sjostrom
    (Mitchell)
    .
As for Stefanovich, it’s nice to see his demotion to the Royals has lit a fire under his ass!

He could be that missing power forward for Toronto if he would just push himself!

Isn’t Ribiero mired in one ridiculous long goal-scoring slump? Not sure, have to look it up and to be quite honest it wouldn’t take me looking at his stats this season to give you big fat fuck Ratty Ribiero.

I just thought of that diving nerve pinch years ago, threw up in my mouth. Ummmm no.

Richards as a fair trade at the deadline, or Richards on July 1st. Nothing else will suffice.
