Thursday Thinkers

Some links for your Thursday afternoon enjoyment:

Mark Sutcliffe of the Ottawa Citizen makes the case for banning Leaf fans from attending Leafs-Senators games at Scotiabank place. Apparently the Senators’ front office have been getting complaints from their supporters about Leaf fans “ruining the experience”.

The National Post‘s Michael Traikos praises winger Clarke MacArthur on his tremendous start to the season thus far. Not only have his contributions to the scoresheet been impressive but his enthusiasm and work ethic has been contagious. The 25 year old former Major Junior star is currently on pace for a 74 point campaign, and attributes his success to simply getting an opportunity to play. In his words, Toronto was really the only city that would “give a free-agent bum like me a chance.”

The Globe and Mail explains that Brett Lebda has had a horrific start to the ’10-’11 campaign and is beginning to feel left out. The veteran blueliner has somehow managed to accumulate a team worst -9 rating despite very limited ice-time in the ten games he’s actually managed to dress for. For his part, Lebda feels that he has generally been working hard, but realizes that the numbers are ultimately the bottom line and that he will have to continue to work at picking up his level of play.

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star takes an early season look back at the Versteeg trade that sent forward Viktor Stalberg along with prospects Chris Didomenico and Phillipe Paradis to Chicago. McGran asserts that both teams have done quite well thus far, as Stalberg is slowly getting more ice-time and trust from head coach Joel Quenneville while Versteeg has been fantastic over the past handful of games handling the point on the Leafs’ powerplay. Steeger’s versatility and strong two-way play have been leaned on heavily by Ron Wilson thus far, as the youngster has averaged 20:23 minutes of ice-time a game, good for 18th among league forwards.

    5) Grabovski and Kulemin continue to score goals
What reasons do you think we can make it??? (I like 1, 4, and 5 the most)

I actually think the Leafs have a very real shot at the playoffs in the East (if they were in the West, forget about it)..

    1) A great example of top end 1st round picks – I just hope Wilson starts giving Schenn Beauchemins ice time.. that is my ultimate hope when it comes to the Leafs (or heck, just trade Beauchemin already – the man is a hazard out there)
    2) we REALLY miss Phaneuf – points or not, the man is the real deal.. one of the absolute best moves by a Leafs GM in a long time
    3) hopefully Gustavvson gets more and more starts. Burke has done a brilliant job in goal with this organization – heck, JSG certainly wont cost you too many games either
    4) this is the real wild card and I think the playoffs hinge on this kid (I know, no pressure). Its amazing what top end 1st round picks can do. I think its too early for him, but, he has all the skills. He keeps progressing and he will fill a big hole up front, even if he doesnt have size
    5) we are watching Grabovski (and even Kulemin to a different degree) absolutely break out right now. I still dont think people realize just how good Grabovski is. Simply amazing to watch him play

I got a little down in that massive losing streak about the Leafs playoff hopes – but, I called them to make the playoffs from the off season, and I may have my blue and white colored glasses firmly fused to my head – but, I think this team, in the East – are making the playoffs. I dont think the playoffs alone are good enough, I still think they screwed this up royally – but, end of the day, its been a long time since I have seen the playoffs – and well – I wouldnt mind watching some meaningful Leafs hockey

something to consider, and it’s probably completely worthless, but matthew barry said in his blog on that other site, that he heard the hurricanes have shopped eric staal to anyone who will listen. at first i thought that sounded ridiculous, but if you actually consider some of the real world factors that might go into such a decision, it makes a little more sense. from a hockey perspective, of course you should never move eric staal. however, carolina is a team not drawing like they once did (despite some recent playoff success), and looking to become a budget team (they want their internal cap to be 45 million). if staal eats up 8.25 million of that, they don’t have a lot of room to maneuver. they have a host of rfa’s and ufa’s to resign so they can have, you know, a whole team next year, and with staal in the picture, it makes it extremely difficult, no, impossible to do at 45 million or under.
    -
with sutter and skinner emerging as two legitimate top six centers (and boychuk as a very nice two-way center), you have to wonder, how valuable is cap space to a team that would like to resign jussi jokinen, chad larose, ian white, joni pitkanen, brandon sutter, pat dwyer and potentially erik cole? if they slide out of the playoffs, is it possible that staal’s monster contract could be moved for a bargain price not unlike brad richards 3 or 4 years ago? there are some teams that could afford to give up more than us (ie. los angeles), but none of them could afford to just add an extra 8.25 million to their payroll for five years without it costing them their own young stars. it’s a precarious place to be for the hurricanes.
    -
could be an interesting situation to follow….

    @ Andrew R:
    1) Yeah Schenn and Kaberle are playing some excellent hockey right now as a pair. I must admit that I am really surprised by Kaberle because he has not played at this level for three years.
    2) The thig I like about Phaneuf is that he can elevate his game big time if things get very physical. He can quickly win pucks and turn the play the other way. Also the Leafs can use him running the puck in deep on offense in some situations.
    3) Gus does look poised to go on a run.
    4) With Kadri we have all seen a glimpse of his hands at the pro level, I don’t think we have seen his will yet. He can be a very strong willed player, if we see that it might be the key to getting in the playoffs.
    5) I agree Grabovski is hugely underrated even by Leaf fans.
Unlike you I have not gotten over the loosing skid, from an objective standpoint. I feel like our lack of size up front will be a major flaw to overcome. Surely not impossible. We do have some tough defence and a tough bottom six especially if we make room for Hanson via Mitchell.

I read the blog, but I really doubt he is available. At 26 a player like Eric Staal is hard to come by, but wow he would sure fit in here nicely. We could handle the hit. The big question is what goes back the other way? Kessel?
Staal is way more valuble than Kessel. There are only a few players in his class- Getzlaf, Crosby, and Toews.
    Versteeg Staal Kadri
    Kulemin Grabovski McArthur
    Armstrong Bozak Sjostrom
    Brown Brent Hanson/Orr

    via Yahoo Sports:
    Thu, Nov 25

G Ryan Miller missed his second straight game with a groin strain suffered Nov. 19. Last season’s Vezina Trophy winner is day-to-day. He missed five games earlier this month with a hip injury. “Coming off missing two weeks and right into this, I don’t want to do something where I end up setting myself right back,” Miller said. “I’m just trying to be cautious right now and know that I’m not that far off.”
    .
Sounds more like he’ll be ready next week. Good for us.

Just relax, go have a drink (coffee, it’s not even 9am yet here lol) and get ready for the beating we’re gonna shove down the Sabre’s throats tonight.

Please no Lupul…4.25 for him would kill our cap flexibilty for this year and he will need at least a half year to get his game legs & timing back.
Also I’m not sure that Finger would pass re-entry at 1.75 there are some teams with cap space that could use an OK 5-6 guy (NYI, COL, MON without Markov) so I don’t think he can be traded during the season.

    @ B Leaf:
    -
Well, if you read my post, trading Kessel for Staal wouldn’t really help them out of their situation at all. It would be a Brad Richards like situation where they literally want no salary coming back the other way. I know people have a very hard time understanding this concept, but the value in the trade comes from the cap and salary relief – not the player return. Look at what Richards was traded for under the same circumstances:
    -
Jussi Jokinen (at the time, a 3rd/4th liner who was thought to be maxed out in potential)
    Mike Smith (backup goalie)
    Jeff Halpern (4th line center)
    4th round pick
    -
The advantage was that these 4 pieces together cost Tampa about 2 million dollars, and therefore saved them 6 million. It’s not about getting fair value hockey-wise, it’s about moving forward with cap space. If they made the trade during the season, it also puts the Canes in a position where they could get a lottery pick, and continue to build a very strong, younger, cheaper stable than they currently have. They would’t even be interested in Kessel because of the price tag. They’d be looking at Caputi, Gunnarsson, etc…. Cheap players who could also play.
    -
Yes Staal is an elite player, but he also has an elite price tag. Value is determined by what people are willing to pay, and the thing is, I doubt there’s a market for Eric Staal. If you start asking for team’s best players and their best prospects, you can be sure there will be no market at all….

If he’s traded, he doesn’t have to clear re-entry to come up on another team. He would only have to clear re-entry for us.

My panties aren’t in a knot, I’m just explaining the obvious bias that TSN has to IBLeaf who would otherwise eat up whatever TSN shoves down his throat because “they must know people”, lol.
