The Maple Leafs will try to forget last night’s defeat in Buffalo as they travel tonight to Scotiabank place to duel against their struggling provincial rivals. After kicking off the month of November with a 5-1-0 run, the Senators have since lost 5 out of their past 6 games including a defeat Friday afternoon at the hands of Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.

The Leafs have had a nightmarish time on the road this season, ranking dead last in the league in terms of road record and offensive production. The team has stumbled into a 2-6-1 record including a ghastly 16 goals for through those 9 games played. The Leafs have lost seven in a row on the road, as their last victory away from the friendly confines of the ACC came way back on October 15th against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

The club’s powerplay will look to get back on track after going 0 for 6 last night against the Sabres. The Maple Leafs had won five straight against the Senators until Ottawa recorded a 3-2 regulation victory last time out at the Air Canada Centre. Toronto won the other meeting between the clubs this season, smoking the Senators 5-1 earlier on this year.

Notable Quote (Tim Brent): We need to compete more on the road … it’s easier to play at home because you’ve got your fans behind you all the time. On the road, you’ve got to match the compete level of the home team because they’re playing hard in front of their home fans.”

Head Coach Ron Wilson would like to insert Mike Brown and Brett Lebda back into the lineup, but both of those players will be game-time decisions. The Senators will send out goalie Brian Elliott tonight while Jonas Gustavsson continues to run with the Leafs’ starting job in the absence of Giguere. Ottawa will also swap in Matt Carkner in place of David Hale tonight on defense.

Last night is another example of why we just arnt good enough…..

We actually played a decent game, but our players are not talented enough to take a game over singlehandedly and are not enough of a team to play a consistent game….

Burke needs to make something happen….but what is he going to do….we dont have much to offer in effort to land a top line center…….the objective was to make the playoffs, but no one should kid themselves and think that we are anything more that a bubble team.

We are the youngest team in the NHL and it shows…..we cant expect much more than that..

Just thinking about getting Richards makes so much sense
Our defence would be built with veterans and young guns, our goaltending is the same, and then our forwards would. We have no veteran leadership or talent in the top 6. Even before we had Hagman, and maybe Ponikarovsky, but now we have no body.

If we trade anyone under 25 for Richards, I think it will be a mistake. It’s becoming painfully clear we will not make the playoffs, even if we land a centre. I sure hope Burke’s trade motivation isn’t to not finish in the bottom 5 again because I can see him making another ill advise short-term fix simply to avoid the embarrassment.

I wouldnt mind a 5th-10th place finished again this year and use JSG, Macarthur, Beauchemin and others for trade bait. The make it a must to sign Richards in the offseason

Well well….I gotta be honest fellas, I didn’t watch the game last night. My kid had a semi final tourny game at 8 pm, so I watched 10 year olds get it done with a 2 – 1 victory. Good fun. AA 10 year olds going end to end and playing like there was no tomorrow. Anyways, I just read thru all the posts. And I can’t believe we are back on this kessel sux bandwagon. Or BB sux bandwagon. The signing of BB is in the past. He is 2 years in of a 5 year plan. The Kessek deal is done….there are no mulligans in hockey. We can’t change either facts. The past is the past. It can not be altered. In any walk of life. Andrew R…..your a smart guy…I’ve looked up your bio….and I understand that you are a numbers guy…but I am guessing to be where you are today, you had to have pulled the trigger on some bad decisions or at least decisions that didn’t appear to work out right away but with some patience, they eventually worked out. I for one aint bailing on Kessel. He’s 23. And has more talent in his pinky than most guys in this league have in their whole bodies. He needs help up front….simple as that. BB has my support. He is 5 years into a 5 year plan. I would like someone to post his inherited 50 contracts and compare that with the 50 we presently have. My gawd…no comparison. The future can be altered. RW aint gonna be the guy that leads this core to the promised land. He needs to altered. And so does his staff. Fire them. Rightly or wrongly….this is where the change today needs to come from. Is is right ? No…but these guys have tuned him out. It happens all the time. Mistakes and indecision are made by most when they feel inside pressure. These guys are afraid of making mistakes that they have forgot how to use the same instincts they used to make it to this league in the first place. RW….your time has expired. End of rant.

Can’t get the Schenn postgame audio to work on AM640. Laughable that mapleleafs.com didn’t post his interview. “Can’t post it, don’t want to make the team look bad with one of our own calling us out!” They look plenty bad on their own, thanks.

I know people like to pile on Berger around here, but his new blog post “Burke can make the easy move” is spot on, IMO.

I love it. The whole forward group think they’re Kessel with the perimeter shots. Newsflash, only Kessel is quick enough to score from the perimeter, and even he usually misses. I think Luke Schenn must like Ron Wilson, because if there is any kind of mini-revolt, or the guys are just tuning him out, Luke is calling them out. That’s really great news actually.
    -
At the end of the day though, Burke needs to find us another center. Even if it’s not the right center, just anyone so that we can move Bozak around the lineup, cut his ice time, something! Maybe another coach could get slightly better results as far as the compete level in front of the net goes, but any coach will still have to deal with the lack of experience at center – that falls on Burke.
    -
I commend Burke for having the foretitude to stick with his man and trust Bozak to be all he could be this year, but I can’t believe he didn’t have a backup plan.

We all want a trade… but the problem is, if no other GM wants to trade with the Leafs, what does BB do? Do you continue to let your same group of guys go in there night in and night out and continue to get shut out?

The Leafs need to draft their top six talent. Especially if they want top 3 talent, or a legitimate number one center of the future. No one will trade away their top line centermen for less than Kadri or Schenn +.
    .
Richards would be a good stop-gap solution if you can get him in UFA (not trade) and for $6M or below on no more than five year deal. But good luck accomplishing that.
    .
If they finish bottom five again this year, it will have been four straight years of tanking:
    2008 – bottom 7 – Schenn
    2009 – bottom 7 – Kadri
    2010 – bottom 2 – Seguin
    2011 – bottom 5 – TBD
    .
That’s almost a full re-build. So much for the “accelerated retool”. Unless Burke can pull another rabbit out of his hat and convince someone that Beauchemin + MacArthur will save their team, so give us your best player for them. Luckily, we still have our 2012 pick and can right this ship by drafting the elite talent we need.

Lots of teams want to trade though. There are many teams underachieving right now, particularly defensively, which is a benefit to us having Beauchemin sitting there ready to go. The problem is that many of them would sacrifice a winger gladly, while all we really need is a center. I think San Jose would part with Setoguchi without much delay. There are rumors that Simmonds has suddenly fallen out of favor in Los Angeles. Buffalo would probably still love to move Stafford. Langenbrunner and maybe even Clarkson are on the block in New Jersey. Ryder, Wheeler and Sturm could be had from Boston. There is lots out there, but no centers.

For the record, I was ok with the Bruins drafting Seguin… Because at least we still had Kessel… I don’t want to turn this into a Kessel trade discussion, but I think we all knew that second first round pick could really come back to bite us in the ass..
    .
It’s too early to tell right now, but we’re definitely flying without a safety net

    @ ingy56:
I’m sure all of the stuff about Phaneuf’s leadership in the room is accurate. Most of the criticism has been that he needs to worry about getting his game back on track first and foremost. It would be way too much for Schenn to actually be the captain.. but you can tell he’s growing into a leader, and will probably be the next one after Phaneuf moves on.
    .
23min TOI, even +/-, 3 hits … He’s been our only reliable defender, night in and night out. Like Gustavsson, the forwards need to give these guys some support.

    @Cameron

Although I’ve heard LA come out and deny any report that says Simmonds has fallen out of favour, he and Setoguchi are the only two that would interest me on that list you just gave me. I know Sjostrom loves LA and NY. Maybe a trade could be had between the two? Don’t think that solves any problems though.

Yea, I would love to trade away the veteran talent this year, run with a young team again next year. Land a top 10 pick again next year, which is supposed to be a very strong draft, and then re-add veteran pieces. I’m in no hurry to return to glory, so long as we continue to stay on the right path. If we did all this, I think that Kessel over Seguin would still accelerate the process moving forward.
    -
    At the Deadline:
    -
    Beauchemin for a forward
    Giguere for a prospect
    MacArthur for a pick
    -
And then hopefully all that convinces Kaberle to come to a decision – either resign at a fair rate, or go to a contender and let Burke get a return for your services.

Yes, for me it’s always been about what the rest of the deal becomes. Luckily this draft looks pretty weak compared to the last 3 years, but it would still be nice to finish in the 10-14 area instead of the lottery area.
