How far are the Leafs from the Playoffs?

Goal difference vs. Points – A simple statistical analysis
by MLHS’ Great Dane (written before the weekend games)

There has been some talk on the site lately as to whether or not the playoffs remain in reach for the Maple Leafs despite a less than mediocre record a quarter of the way through the season, a subject Derek Harmsworth broached in his blog “At the Quarter Pole, Leafs Improved, But Is It Enough?” Statistically speaking, is 20, 21 or 24 points at the quarter pole enough to make the playoffs?

What follows is a small regression analysis of goal difference vs. points based on the records of the 30 teams in the NHL before American Thanksgiving.

The blue dots are the actual observations at the quarter pole, while the Red Line is the estimated relationship between goals for and goals against (goal difference) and points earned.

For this analysis, a valid point of criticism is the fact that points per game would be more relevant to use. However, given the uncertainty in any such analysis, I do not believe that it will change the general conclusions.

The statistical results are shown in the following tables:

For those interested in statistical analysis, it is easy to verify that the regression explain the data very well with a R Square of 0.7354. The t-stats show that all variables are significant as well as the whole regression.

In laymans terms, what does the regression tell us?

First, at the Quarter pole a team with zero goals difference should have approx 23.5 point, which would equal 94 points for the entire season. If a team has a positive goal difference of one, then they should have 6.78 point more.

To illustrate this, Edmonton Oilers has a negative goals difference of 1.5, so they should have 1.5 * 6.78 points less than 23.5. That is 10 points less than 23.5 which is approx. 14 point. That is the actual points total the Oilers had before Thanksgiving.

At the other end of the standings, we have the Capitals with 32 points. Their goal difference is only +0.47, which given the regression should give around 27 points at the quarter pole. That is a difference of 5 points, which shows that when talking about statistical analysis one should never talk about an exact value but an interval.

Turning to our beloved Leafs, I will of course disregard all the comments above.

The Maple Leafs were at the Quarter pole running a goal difference of -0.3 and had 19 points. The model tells us that they should have 21 points, so they are behind the estimate of the model. For the entire season, the model extrapolates to around 84 points, which consensus would say is not enough to make the playoffs.

My conclusion is that the Leafs will end the season with 10 point less than required and therefore need to elevate the goal difference above zero, i.e. an improvement of at least 0.3.

GA/G is this season is down to 2.65 and unless Gustavson suddenly is even better than Price and Thomas combined then the improvement needs to come from goals for.

Given the uncertainty, I would estimate that the Leafs need to improve with 0.5 goals for per game to be on the safe side. Such an improvement would have given almost 3.5 points more that the Quarter pole and 14 points for the entire season. Enough to make the playoffs.

So Burke has one of the following assignments:

  • Pray the Leafs with the current roster find 0.5 goals more per game on average

or

  • bring one or two players in that will score 40 goals more per season than the players that leave.

Finding players with 40 goals more per season than the players that a leaving seem very difficult. We are talking a center of Eric Staal / Brad Richard caliber combined with a LW a la Semin / Parise.

So will the Leafs make the playoff? Of course they can, but statistically is seems difficult, if they do not start scoring significantly more goals per game than they are now.

giggy could net a good return, but would any team in need of goalie depth have that kind of cap space?

I know it’ll never happen, but I still dream of:
    .
To Toronto: Savard, Ryder, 2011 1st round pick (Toronto)
To Boston: Cheap filler (Mitchell), Gunner, prospect?
    .
This solves Boston’s cap issues, and calms the hell out of bipolar leaf fans. This trade is really ‘no lose’ for Toronto, who can easily afford to dump Ryder if needed. If Savard is done, so is his cap hit.
    .
    Reasons this won’t happen:
    1. Boston can likely find easier methods of cap relief
    2. Boston won’t give up a potential (probable? blech) lottery pick
    3. By making this trade, Burke is effectively saying ‘yea, I effed up’. Don’t see him doing that.

you all seem to forget that giguere has a NTC and would only wave it to come to toronto because of his kid.

Despite the obviously disapointing results so far the year, i still believe BB is on the right track. He has always said he believes in building from the net out and so far, 2 out of three ain’t bad. He so far this year has not panicked and made a rash deal for the rugged winger/center we ALL know we need. He has to be patient, despite the doom and gloom from the media and forums like this. He will make a deal and I am sure he is waiting for one that makes sense, where he can deal with the few extra pieces we have (depth in D and goal, good prospects).
Having said that, I still feel that the team on paper is better than the results show and this must be down to coaching. If RW and crew have lost this group of kids, and it sure seems he has, then they should go. We need someone who can MOTIVATE, not just bench and ream in the press. These are KIDS, and if their confidence in themselves is lost then we are really screwed, long term.

Well If Wilson does get fired it will be the entire coaching staff imo, Im just not sold on who to bring in, though I do like the recent sucessess of Bob Boughnar or Dale Hunter as options
i like both those guys but if wilson gets fired i think we all know its going to be eakins thats gunna get interm coach position. Im pretty sure wilsons contract is up at the end of the year though and if we just dont give him another contract then id say both those guys are possibilities. Boughnar would be easy to snag too as he manages the windsor spitfires if i can remember right so he be close to that team as well.

Wilson has this year and next year left on his contract.

I usually look ahead at the Leafs schedule and say, “They can beat them, they should beat this team, that team is good, but the Leafs can win…”. Now, for the first time that I can remember I am looking ahead saying, “Oh shit! They won’t beat that team, this team is too good, that team sucks, but they’re still good enough to beat the Leafs…”.
I like the team the Leafs have, but they need to mature TOGETHER, and get used to their REGULAR linemates so they can build some chemistry, but at the moment they are the worst Leafs club I have ever seen.

yep forgot about that as does Thomas, you dont think they could be swayed to waive for the right reasons. If Burke wanted/needed to move them for picks/players

exactly… giguere says i will only go to toronto and anaheim has to dump the cash…
so if you think giguere will get a return you have to ask yourself a few questions
    1) he basically said no to 28 other teams last year, why would that change?
    2) even though its the deadline and his remaining salary will be lower… its a 6m cap hit for a full season, who is willing to pay that?
    3) burke doesnt ask players to waive, why would giguere ask for a trade?
    4) even if he does submit a list of teams what are the chances any of them are looking for an average quality overpaid veteran goaltender who is approaching the end of his career?

(As per Hockey Central at Noon)
New line combos at practice today:
    MacArthur – Kadri – Kessel
    Kulemin – Grabovski – Armstrong
    Sjostrom – Bozak – Versteeg
    Brown – Mitchell – Orr
    .
J.S. Giguere also participated in his first full practice since being injured.

    @ LoMac:
    -
Many reasons. He came here to re-establish himself as a number one, but looks more like a 1B with Gustavsson playing so well. He came for Burke, not the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite Burke’s insistence on not asking players to waive, he will surely tell J.S. if any teams make offers. It’s as simple as asking him if he’d like to go to a contender for a chance at glory one more time. Much, much different than the Kaberle situation – the two should not be compared. Who could afford it? Washington could. A team will only need 1.25 million or so to afford him at the deadline, so it’s not really that enormous at all. Philly also has very inexperienced goaltending, and could afford to part with a pick for Giguere. They have the space also.

i don’t see kadri as being our “new first line center”. the “first line” is just where he landed after the shuffle. our first three lines are interchangable IMO.

Agreed there isnt a very big market for Giggy but there are still a couple teams I could see him A) Waiving for and B) needing him.
I still think Tampa may be looking for a goalie and as the trade deadline comes up I think they will spend some extra cash if they are close, and I think BB spins it as giving one of his “guys” a chance to be a #1 and win another cup.
Edmonton’s another team that needs help in net but I cant see Giggy waiving for them.

    @ Inglewood Jack:
Care to elaborate? If he’s too injured to play, he can retire, no? He’s <35 years old, so the cap hit doesn't count as far as I know.
If he doesn't want to retire but his play is terrible, we can bury him in the minors, unless he has a NMC. As far as I know he only has a NTC.
