Monday Musings

Some quick news and notes for your Monday afternoon:

- The Maple Leafs announced over the weekend that forward prospect Mikhail Stefanovich has been loaned to Minsk Dynamo of the KHL. There is no word yet on the anticipated timetable on a potential return to North America. The 21 year old Stefanovich was touted by as a dynamic, scoring forward after being drafted 98th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs, but has struggled with inconsistency over the past couple seasons. Mikhail’s development should benefit from playing against higher level competition and returning to a familiar environment.

- Forward prospect Bradley Ross has been invited to the December Camp roster for the 2011 Canadian World Junior team. The Leafs’ top selection, 43rd overall in the 2010 NHL draft, has 10 goals and 13 assists through 26 games played this season for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. Ross will likely be leaned upon for a grinding, agitating third line role for the Canadians, much like Steve Downie was a couple years ago.

- The Leafs’ other highly touted forward prospect, Greg McKegg, was unfortunately left off the invite list for the December Camp. The Erie Otters captain has been destroying the OHL to the tune of 20 goals and 20 assists through 28 games played, good for 5th overall in league scoring. McKegg earned his second OHL Player of the Week honours earlier this morning, after a week in which he tallied 6 goals, 3 assists and a +5 rating in 3 games played.

- It looks as if Nazem Kadri will be stepping even moreso into the limelight as the youngster has been centering the team’s top line in practice ahead of Tuesday night’s matchup against the Lightning. Kadri will be flanked by Clarke MacArthur and Phil Kessel in an effort to generate some much needed offense. Luca Caputi will be inserted back into the lineup and placed alongside Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin on the team’s second line while the struggling Tyler Bozak will be bumped down to third line duties.

What’s with all the Mitchell hate? The guy is a bona-fide generational talent. He’s the perfect centerman to build a team around.

I think I’d send myself to the AHL if that happened….

    Question Stupid? Maybe
Who decides who comes up and who goes down? Coach or GM? Combination? I am trying to figure out who needs to be throttled re: Caputi

although a coaching change is warranted, and Wilson is probably making more then a few mistakes in desparation – Wilson IS a legitimate, accomplished NHL coach… Firing him may be needed, but, anyone who thinks he is the issue here is not really being objective.. If the Leafs were a stacked team, running away with it in the regular season and struggling in the playoffs – ok, I get that… but, how the heck is the Leafs record this year Wilsons fault? If he was the best coach at every facet of the game and in every situation available in the entire universe – how much better would their record be?

Its ok to scapegoat Wilson – just part of the job being a coach in the NHL – but, for Petes sake – when will everyone start looking at the real issues here – and that is the talent (or lack thereof) on the ice, the lack of cap space and the lack of any real high end prospects coming and the lack of 1st round picks needed to get those prospects..

The blame falls to Brian Burke – clearly and simply. This is HIS team – and its not a coincidence that his best players were inherited and his best prospect (though playing in the NHL now) came from a high 1st round pick.. calling for Wilsons head is all fine and dandy, but, its like wearing a dome when you have an STD – its not going to stop you from sticking to your underwear, but, at least you arent passing it around.. firing Wilson is dealing with the symptom, not the cause… heads need to roll, but, its the head that created this mess which should get the axe..

Both of them do, plus Eakins and his crew get a say aswell, only on the call-ups though.

On a side note where has Finger been? Havent seen him in the Marlies line-up for like 3 games or so.

    @ Andrew R:
I think if Wilson a) didnt throw his people under any moving object and b) didnt over coach i.e showing replays of what they did wrong between shifts. That the boys would go to war for this guy like they did in the first 4 games, I think seeing RW take Gunner out and him still bashing people when they where 4-0 pissed off the players plus they would have had his annoying shit in the background from last year.

Anyways I like the Caputi is being sent down, its better and safer down there. I think they are putting Kadri front and center as a part of a hopeful I told you so strategy. Wilson is anticipating him will fail. Anyways, I do believe we get beat tomorrow night but if we lose Thursday against Edmonton then we have to make some significant changes. I just finished a day of flying and anticipated something more than Caputi being sent down to be honest. I expected a few roster moves.

Your posts are nowhere near as bad as some might point out. Actually, I agree with you on a lot of things.
Maybe if people put down the kool aid for a while an didnt get so defensive of their Leafs they might see that not all you post is shit

Why do people consider him a mole? I think he is just a brutal coach since isnt he the one in charge of the PK? I think Acton and Hunter are the ones that have to go for starters. If Wilson, doesnt make the move then he has to go.

I’d say Burkes trying to show case Mitchell but it’s hard to show case lack of talent, why not sit Zigo in the press box nightly as oppossed to Caputi, if Caputi is going to be the player they want him to be playing regularily might help that. Man I love the hate on Mitchell

    @ Andrew R:
    Where to start?
PP and PK says it all.
Playing 11 excruciating games with Lebda, still counting with Mitchell when alternatives are available.
Bitch slapping your future star in the press, and say nothing about vet’s miscues?
He may be a great coach for a veteran team but he is not the guy to lead and motivate kids/

Someone made the point we have too many young people up in front and I think that poster is right. We do need a few gnarly veterans to help mentor the players. Sjostrom, Orr and Brown just arent that sort of player. We need to sign Guerin and make some kind of a mentor trade ie a Paul Kariya or something like that. Take Mitchell and someone else out of the lineup and add a few folks like that.
