Clash of the T-Lightnins

The Toronto Maple Leafs have become a team of inconsistency. In their quest to finish higher than last season, Toronto has rushed into certain games with speed and tenacity, while in others they have dwindled and failed to produce a single point. Over the last four weeks, the latter seems to have become the new identity of the team. Recently, the only true star the team possesses is one Jonas Gustavsson, but when the Tampa Bay Lightning and Steven Stamkos stroll into town for their second meeting of the season, the Leafs will have to be better than good.

It will be an unbelievable challenge,” Schenn said. “Since the start of the season and probably since the Olympic break last year, he has probably been the hottest player in the league. He gets to his spots and scores goals just about every night. We’ll have to be good as a five-man unit. Not one guy is going to shut him down in particular, it will have to be everyone chipping in.”

Scoring has been the major concern for the club this season, and will be the story for the team once again tonight. Stamkos has averaged nearly two points per game, and with the Leafs lacking the ability to get their names on the score sheet, they’ll have to score at least three goals to earn a victory tonight. I would expect it to be a goaltenders duel once again, but, as with any other game, if the Leafs want any chance at all to win, they need to bury the puck.

Unfortunately for the Leafs, their fan base is growing restless with the mixture of the Leafs currently sitting near the bottom of the league’s standings, as well as their lack of draft picks. If they want to turn things around for the obvious hole that they are currently digging, wins are an absolute must.

Toronto does not have any players who are on a hot streak.

Who’s Hot? Tampa Bay:

Steven Stamkos (C) 19 pts in last 12 GP
Teddy Purcell (RW/LW) 8 pts in last 6 GP
Ryan Malone (LW/RW) 4 pts in last 3 GP
Steve Downie (RW) 4 pts in last 4 GP

Who’s Cold? Toronto:

Francois Beauchemin (D) 0 pts in last 6 GP
Tomas Kaberle (D) 0 pts in last 4 GP
Phil Kessel (RW) 1 pts in last 4 GP
Jonas Gustavsson (G) 0-2-0, 3.05, .893 in last 2 GPI

Who’s Cold? Tampa Bay:

Mattias Ohlund (D) 0 pts in last 10 GP
Pavel Kubina (D) 0 pts in last 4 GP
Dominic Moore (C/LW) 0 pts in last 3 GP
Mike Smith (G) 1-1-0, 4.72, .816 in last 2 GPI
Dan Ellis (G) 0-0-1, 4.84, .812 in last 3 GPI

I will be liveblogging tonight’s game on The Checking Line. The action gets underway at 6:45 PM EST.

    @ Omac13:
I’m going to blame him as much as anyone else would if it was someone else on the team. It was a low percentage play given the coverage and knowing that he was out of position to recover if the pass was intercepted. Which of course, it was.

    @ Schenn:
He’s our best face-off guy? That’s why he was out there.

wow… I never said my thoughts yet after that half ass play with 12 seconds left but for fuck sakes what is wrong with Bozak and versteeg? Block that fucking shot… You just watched Brown give his whole body up and you can’t even block a shot with 12 fucking seconds left!?
    .
Bring Zigomanis back up… I don’t agree with Cherry a lot but he is bang on here… I was thinking right before the draw we need Zigomanis in this situation, surely enough we got scored on.
    ,
We were so close to a Monster win by Gustavsson (34 saves, 2 goals against), a great game by Schenn, and most importantly the win… But because of that 12 seconds it led to two goals against Gustavsson… (4 goals on 35 shots) a bad play by schenn and yet another cursed loss. Gotta feel for Gustavsson… Just sick to my fuckin stomach right now.

How is it people dont understand that the reason its on Bozak and Versteeg is because you have to LAY DOWN to block that shot. It fuckin hurts (not alwyas if you slide on slight angle) but with 10 seconds you HAVE TO DO IT !!
And Luke Schenn this OT loss in on your ass. But you sir are a fuckin champ for how you take care of the game on the ice and off of it.

    Pre-friggin-cisely, on both counts.
    .
Bozak squeezed his knees and tiptoed out. Sprawling would have cut off the lane, he was close enough to the blue line.

I kinda wish we had Zigo up with us because he would be out there with the game on the line taking the faceoff………….I am not saying Bozak is not good at the draws but I think Zigo would be are best faceoff man by far…………..After they score Grabo goes out for the next faceoff and wins it clean…………Was real nice not seeing Mitchell out there tonight……Also I hope Brown is not overly hurt man he puts himself out there for the team………

    Really frustrating loss.
    .
Second time they’ve blown a game with 12 seconds left. Both times a two goal lead evaporates into a OTL.
    .
There’s no worse way to lose again. Heartbreaking.
    .
I am a huge Schenn fan. Even though his goal in the 1st should have counted… He fucked up on the 3-on-2. No doubt about it.
    .
What I like about him is this:
    @FriedgeHNIC:
When Toronto room opened, Schenn was waiting for media. Didn’t duck from mistake. That’s leadership.
    .
    and:
    @jonas640:
Schenn on failed pass in OT that led to Gagne winner: “I don’t think it’s any excuses being a young player, it’s just a stupid mistake.”
